Lamellated nerve endings in the cheek mucosa of fifteen adult Sprague-Dawley rats were studied with light and electron microscopes. Serial sections revealed that the terminal axon of the lamellated nerve endings is in the central portion, and that the inner core is made up of two stacks of lamellae. Ototoxic interaction between chloramphenicol and noise was studied in two separate investigations. A secondary anemia is characteristic of infections with the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, and previous studies had suggested that proline released by the worm might be involved in producing this condition. Serotonin-like immunofluorescence was demonstrated in the glomus cells of the rat carotid body. Similar immunoreactivity was noted in mast cells in the organ, while no immunoreactive nerve fibers were seen. It is suggested that glomus cell serotonin could participate in the modulation of chemoreceptor activity.

The design and application of a simple capsule administration tube for miniature capsules are described. Experiments with rats have shown that the tube is capable of depositing capsules at the distal end of the oesophagus. Regardless of the location of the capsule in the oesophagus, provided normal peristaltic action occurs, the capsule will have reached the stomach and discharged its contents within 10 min. In the present study, a sequential observation of the gastric lesions or ulcers in rats weighing from 100 g was made with an endoscope. A testicular hypoplastic (T-H) rat strain, originating from the Wistar-Imamichi rat colony at the Institute for Animal Reproduction, has been maintained by full-sib matings since 1974 for eight filial generations. There were no abnormal signs in external features and growth patterns of the T-H strain. Testicular hypoplasia was detectable at about 8 weeks of age by palpation around the scrotum.
