Dissociative and sympathomimetic toxicity associated with recreational use of 1-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl) piperazine (TFMPP) and 1-benzylpiperzine (BZP).

INTRODUCTION: There is emerging evidence of increasing use of legally available synthetic compounds as recreational drugs. While there are some changes to legislation relating to these synthetic compounds, often the emergence of the agents outpaces the effect of the legislation to curb their use, and the legal status of these agents may change as more information on their toxicity becomes known. TFMPP [1-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl) piperazine] was initially temporarily controlled under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act in 2002 in the US, but following further review and lack of publish

Human psychobiology of MDMA or 'Ecstasy': an overview of 25 years of empirical research.

AIMS: This paper aimed to review how scientific knowledge about the human psychobiology of MDMA has developed over time. METHODS: In this paper, the empirical findings from earlier and later studies will be reviewed. RESULTS: When MDMA was a 'novel psychoactive substance', it was not seen as a drug of abuse, as it displayed loss of efficacy. However, recreational users display a unique pattern of increasing doses, deteriorating cost-benefit ratios, and voluntary cessation. MDMA increases body temperature and thermal stress, with cortisol levels increased by 800% in dance clubbers. It can be

Acute cognitive disorder as the initial manifestation of nitrous oxide abusing: a case report.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a colorless, odorless gas used as an anesthetic and analgesic. It is also abused as a recreational drug, and such abuse is associated with neurological disorders and psychiatric complications such as myelopathy and, rarely, cognitive impairment. Its abuse has not been associated with acute cognitive decline. Here, we report a young girl who presented with acute cognitive impairment after excessive recreational inhalation of nitrous oxide and who recovered completely after vitamin B12 supplementation. We conclude that nitrous oxide abuse can cause acute cognitive impairme

Severe toxicity due to injected but not oral or nasal abuse of methylphenidate tablets.

BACKGROUND: Non-medical use of methylphenidate is increasing. Little is known about potential acute medical complications associated with recreational use of methylphenidate. STUDY AIM: To identify medical problems associated with methylphenidate abuse. METHODS: Retrospective case series of methylphenidate abuse cases presenting to an inner city emergency department. RESULTS: We identified 14 cases of methylphenidate abuse between 2003 and 2010. Ten of these patients abused methylphenidate alone while four co-ingested other drugs, mainly alcohol. The route of ingestion was oral in nine pati

Evenings with Molly: Adult Couples' Use of MDMA for Relationship Enhancement.

Within the modern resurgence of psychedelics as medicinal agents for a range of conditions, the story of MDMA (Ecstasy, Molly) has been re-narrated from a dangerous street drug to a breakthrough mental health therapy. Even still, the story of MDMA remains incomplete within a binary discourse of deviant recreational use versus psychotherapeutic-medical use. The present research aimed to uncover an emerging model of MDMA use grounded in the experiences of adult couples using MDMA privately and in the context of their committed relationships. Eight adult couples who self-reported active MDMA use

Trends in drug use among electronic dance music party attendees in New York City, 2016-2019.

OBJECTIVE: Electronic dance music (EDM) party attendees are a high-risk population for drug use and associated adverse effects. We examined trends in past-year drug use within this population to better inform prevention and harm reduction efforts. METHODS: Each summer from 2016 through 2019, we used time-space sampling to survey a cross-section of adults entering EDM parties at randomly selected nightclubs and at dance festivals in New York City. Ns ranged from 504 (2019) to 1,087 (2016). We estimated log-linear trends in past-year use of 16 different synthetic drugs or drug classes. RESULTS

Social norms and club drug use of young adult college students during Music Week.

Background: Young adult college students have high rates of substance use, theoretically related to social norms. Behavioral norms refer to the quantity of substances that students think others use, and attitudes refer to how much students or others approve of substance use. Prior research has shown a relationship between behavioral norms, student attitudes, and perceived parental attitudes and alcohol and marijuana use. However, the relationship between social norms and use of club drugs (e.g., MDMA) has not been studied. Objective: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to expand knowl

[Comparison between analytic and anamnestic data about drug consumption among opiate addicts with substitutes therapy. A feasibility study].

In this feasibility study of an observational nature, we used the protocol 'AnalyTox-Op' to compare analytical data with anamnestic reports gathered from specialized drug addiction treatment centers. These data were collected from 32 drug addicts who were patients undergoing treatment with addictive drug substitutes or prescribed psychotropic drugs. Urine toxicology screens were performed using immunological methods followed by confirmation with more specific techniques, i.e. gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DB

Marijuana Legalization and Youth.

Various states have legalized marijuana for medical purposes and/or decriminalized recreational marijuana use. These changes coincide with a decrease in perceived harmfulness of the drug and an increase in its use among youth. This change is of critical concern because of the potential harmful impact of marijuana exposure on adolescents. Marijuana use has been associated with several adverse mental health outcomes, including increased incidence of addiction and comorbid substance use, suicidality, and new-onset psychosis. Negative impacts on cognition and academic performance have also been ob

Committee Opinion Summary NO. 722: Marijuana Use During Pregnancy and Lactation.

Cannabis sativa (marijuana) is the illicit drug most commonly used during pregnancy. The self-reported prevalence of marijuana use during pregnancy ranges from 2% to 5% in most studies. A growing number of states are legalizing marijuana for medicinal or recreational purposes, and its use by pregnant women could increase even further as a result. Because of concerns regarding impaired neurodevelopment, as well as maternal and fetal exposure to the adverse effects of smoking, women who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy should be encouraged to discontinue marijuana use. Association between cannabis and the eyelids: A comprehensive review.

Cannabis is the most consumed illicit drug worldwide. As more countries consider bills that would legalize adult use of cannabis, health care providers, including eye care professionals (ophthalmologists, optometrists), will need to recognize ocular effects of cannabis consumption in patients. There are only 20 studies on the eyelid effects of cannabis usage as a medical treatment or a recreational drug. These include ptosis induction, an "eyelid tremor" appearance and blepharospasm attenuation. Six articles describe how adequately dosed cannabis regimens could be promising medical treatments

Does hyperthyroidism increase risk of death due to the ingestion of ecstasy?

Ecstasy (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, MDMA) is a psychoactive amphetamine derivative widely used for recreational purposes. Deaths caused by acute drug intoxication with MDMA are rare but can often involve a severe hyperthermic episode. The factors underlying the increased risk of some ecstasy users to a fatal drug reaction are not known. We present a case report of a 24-year-old woman who developed fatal hyperthermia with multi-organ complications following MDMA use and was found at autopsy to have diffuse thyroid hyperplasia (Graves' disease). An antemortem blood MDMA concentration of

Unusual Cause of Hemoptysis in a Woman With Cystic Fibrosis.

A 20-year-old patient with cystic fibrosis (CF) complicated by pansinusitis, pancreatic insufficiency, and diabetes presented to the local ED after an episode of large-volume hemoptysis at home. At baseline, she had advanced lung disease (FEV1, 0.97 L; 31% predicted) and upper lobe-predominant fibrocavitary changes. She was intermittently followed at a regional lung transplant center. She was previously evaluated for transplant but was not listed at the time of this presentation because of nontuberculous mycobacteria infection. She had never used tobacco, without reports of recreational inhale

Quetiapine: treatment for substance abuse and drug of abuse.

PURPOSE: The use of quetiapine as a drug to treat various substance use disorders as well as a drug of abuse is examined. SUMMARY: Quetiapine's effectiveness in treating schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is well-known; however, growing evidence has indicated that it may be useful in the treatment of various substance use disorders. Small-scale studies have been conducted to investigate the potential benefit of quetiapine in patients dependent on alcohol, cocaine, and amphetamines. The results of these two studies provide some evidence that quetiapine may benefit patients diagnosed with a men

A strategy for the biological assessment of addiction.

Substances and drugs with powerful psychotropic effects have come into common use during the past decade. Involvement with these substances can range from benign to tragic experiences. Such use may include: experimental, social or recreational use, long-term habituation, toxic reactions, medical-psychologic complications, overdose, and death. Although clinicians tend to analyze and explain many patterns of drug use in terms of various psychodynamic, sociologic and behavioral theories, all of these perspectives begin with the biological and pharmacological effects produced by the various drugs.

Exploring Drug De-addiction Treatment in Unani Medicine.

BACKGROUND: Drug addiction, or substance abuse disorder, has a long history. The use of a drug that causes dependence has been used in various religious and tribal initiation ceremonies. Currently, recreational use or peer modelling leads an individual to substance abuse. The magnitude of the problem of addiction increases multifold in the presence of stressors like broken families, joblessness, occupational stress, etc. OBJECTIVES: The de-addiction process is used to relieve an individual's craving for the drug. It is a painful process, as several effects of withdrawal compel a person to ret

Abuse of fentanyl: An emerging problem to face.

Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid used as a narcotic analgesic supplement in general and regional anesthesia as well as in management of persistent, severe chronic pain. Alarming epidemiological and forensic medicine reports, accumulated mainly during the last two decades, point to a growing increase in illicit use of fentanyl, mainly in North America and Europe. Toxicological data indicates that fentanyl use is inextricably linked with polydrug use. There are two main sources of fentanyl on the "recreational" drug market. First, the most common, combines illicitly manufactured fentanyl fr
