Differentiated impact of social and non-social content in Alexithymia: A facial thermal infrared imaging study.

Alexithymia, a difficulty in processing and expressing emotions, is associated with socio-emotional challenges and altered autonomic responses. This raises the question of whether cognitive (CA) and affective (AA) alexithymia can be differentiated based on parasympathetic and sympathetic indices. This study explores the reactivity of CA and AA individuals to social and non-social emotional stimuli. Participants, categorized as non-alexithymic (NA), CA, or AA based on the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire, completed assessments on empathy, social phobia, depr

Social networking technology, social network composition, and reductions in substance use among homeless adolescents.

Peer-based prevention programs for homeless youth are complicated by the potential for reinforcing high-risk behaviors among participants. The goal of this study is to understand how homeless youth could be linked to positive peers in prevention programming by understanding where in social and physical space positive peers for homeless youth are located, how these ties are associated with substance use, and the role of social networking technologies (e.g., internet and cell phones) in this process. Personal social network data were collected from 136 homeless adolescents in Los Angeles, CA. Re

Assessing Social Consequences for Task Completion in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

We used a concurrent operant assessment (COA) to evaluate social preferences for individuals with autism spectrum disorder across three comparison conditions: praise versus no interaction, preferred conversation topics versus no interaction, and preferred conversation topics versus praise. First, a multiple stimulus without replacement preference assessment was conducted to identify the preferred conversation topics and interests for all participants. Second, a COA was conducted where participants were able to choose which consequence they wanted to receive while working on an academic task du

Eating clean, feeling broken: A qualitative meta-synthesis of the lived experience of orthorexia nervosa.

Orthorexia nervosa refers to a pathological obsession with healthy eating, yet its classification, causes, and clinical relevance remain contested. This qualitative meta-synthesis explores the lived experiences of individuals with orthorexic behaviors to better understand the psychological, social, and cultural dynamics that sustain this condition. Drawing on thematic synthesis of 16 peer-reviewed, qualitative studies, three major themes emerged: (1) Origins and Motivations for Orthorexic Behavior, highlighting the role of perfectionism, identity, and sociocultural ideals; (2) The Orthorexic E

Beyond nutrition: the district nurse's role in addressing loneliness in enteral tube feeding.

Enteral tube feeding provides nutritional stability for individuals unable to meet requirements orally. However, the psychosocial consequences of enteral tube feeding, particularly loneliness arising from disrupted social eating practices, remain under-recognised in community care. Eating is a socially and culturally embedded activity linked to identity, belonging and relational connection. For individuals receiving long-term enteral tube feeding, altered participation in shared mealtimes and social rituals may increase vulnerability to isolation despite physiological stability. Understanding violence as a health determinant among ethnic communities in Colombia's Pacific region: a qualitative analysis.

This study sought to understand the manifestations of violence affecting Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities in the Nariño Pacific region, Colombia, through the framework of the social determinants of health. A qualitative research design was implemented with 60 purposively selected participants, ensuring variation by ethnicity (49 Afro-descendant and 11 Indigenous), gender (34 women and 26 men), and role (institutional and community). All participants were adults affected by the armed conflict and registered in the National Victims Registry (RUV). Data were collected through in-depth i

Effect of Wearable Digital Intervention for Improving Socialization in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Autism behavioral therapy is effective but expensive and difficult to access. While mobile technology-based therapy can alleviate wait-lists and scale for increasing demand, few clinical trials exist to support its use for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) care. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of Superpower Glass, an artificial intelligence-driven wearable behavioral intervention for improving social outcomes of children with ASD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A randomized clinical trial in which participants received the Superpower Glass intervention plus standard of care

The representation of information about faces in the temporal and frontal lobes.

Neurophysiological evidence is described showing that some neurons in the macaque inferior temporal visual cortex have responses that are invariant with respect to the position, size and view of faces and objects, and that these neurons show rapid processing and rapid learning. Which face or object is present is encoded using a distributed representation in which each neuron conveys independent information in its firing rate, with little information evident in the relative time of firing of different neurons. This ensemble encoding has the advantages of maximising the information in the repres

Pain, post-traumatic stress, and sleep disturbance in older adults with knee osteoarthritis: a path analysis of the mediating effect of depression and social support.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is a prevalent and debilitating comorbidity in older patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA), significantly impacting their quality of life. While pain is a known contributor, the complex interplay between physical symptoms, psychological distress, and social factors remains inadequately understood. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of poor sleep quality and to elucidate the intricate pathways through which pain, post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSD), and social support influence sleep among community-dwelling older KOA patients. METHODS: A multi-stage

"They don't think much of you if you're using": Stigma among criminalised people who smoke methamphetamine in Victoria, Australia.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, methamphetamine ('ice') use has been framed as a major social problem, contributing to punitive policy responses and ongoing criminalisation through which stigma is enacted. Although smoking is the predominant route of use, little is known about how people who smoke methamphetamine experience stigma. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with nine people with histories of smoking methamphetamine, no lifetime history of injecting drug use; and prior interactions with the criminal legal system in Victoria, Australia. Interviews explored experiences of drug use an

The feminine ideal and transactional sex: Navigating respectability and risk in Swaziland.

Women who engage in transactional sex are not only at increased risk of HIV and intimate partner violence, but also face social risks including gossip and ostracism. These social and physical risks may be dependent on both what a woman expects and needs from her partner and how her community perceives the relationship. Gender theory suggests that some of these social risks may hinge on whether or not a woman's relationship threatens dominant masculinity. We conducted a qualitative study in Swaziland from September 2013 to October 2014 to explore transactional sex and respectable femininity thr

Drivers of health polarization during the COVID-19 pandemic: A systematic review.

Health polarization has emerged as a critical factor shaping public health attitudes and behaviors, particularly during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This study provides a systematic review of the key determinants driving health polarization, highlighting the complex interplay of political, social, economic, and psychological factors. By synthesizing findings from 90 studies, we identify six primary drivers: political ideology and partisanship, misinformation and disinformation, social media structures and dynamics, trust in health institutions and professionals, risk and public health

A social-ecological framework and toolbox to help strengthening functional agrobiodiversity-supported ecosystem services at the landscape scale.

Functional agrobiodiversity (FAB) has severely declined during the last decades. Current efforts to reinforce FAB are mainly focused on single-actor, parcel-based measures, whereas multi-actor landscape approaches are supposed to be more effective. In this paper, we propose a social-ecological framework that structures how different land users at both the parcel and landscape level interact with FAB as a natural resource. Furthermore, we introduce 1 m2 FAB gardens as an interactive multipurpose measurement tool to gather data on ecosystem services in collaboration with land users. The presente

[Argentinian women and the uses of drugs: A sociohistorical analysis of female drug use in Argentina (1860-1930)].

This article describes cases presented by experts from the legislative and medical-legal fields regarding the use of psychoactive substances among Argentinian women from 1878 to 1930. Background information is presented regarding the relationship between women and the use different drugs, medical interventions on the female body where psychoactive substances were used are analyzed, and experts' descriptions of cases of female drug users are detailed. Experts' discourses during this period did not attempt to comprehend the specificities of female consumption, but were rather used to position th

[Jet lag].

Desynchronization of circadian rhythmicity resulting from rapid travel through at least four time zones leads to symptoms known in everyday English as jet-lag. The most detrimental effect of jet-lag is fatigue with poor alertness and psychomotor performance. Severity is subject to individual variation in susceptibility (morning/evening typology, age,...) and environmental factors (direction of travel, number of time zones crossed, psychosocial environment...). Many measures used to prevent or reduce jet lag are inappropriate or ineffective and some may even be dangerous, such as use of melaton

Chlorpromazine exerts stronger suppressive action on the instrumental responses motivated by social than by alimentary reward.

Experiments were performed on six dogs over-trained before treatment, in differentiation of two instrumental responses, i.e. reinforced either by food or by sensory-social reward (petting by the experimenter). Chlorpromazine was injected intramuscularly (1.5 mg/kg) in two separate series. In the first series the drug was given four times during two weeks (twice a week). In the second series, it was injected every day for four consecutive days. Chlorpromazine produced a decrease of performance and an increase of response latencies and errors but this effect was much more evident with social tha

The effects of system characteristics on policy implementation and functioning of care for the elderly in France.

In the early 1960s, old age in France was replaced by the notion of "troisième âge," a new definition stressing the possibility of pursuing social and leisure activities and greater independence. Old age itself was postponed to a later age, and acquired a purely negative image and one confused with that of incurable illness. As a result, a living-at-home policy was elaborated, and also a program of adapting institutions to the problems of those now defined as being in the "quatrième âge." This dual-faceted medicosocial policy was originally intended to be comprehensive and coordinated. Analysi

Causes and intervention strategies for appearance anxiety: a critical review of recent advances.

BACKGROUND: Appearance anxiety has increasingly been recognized as an important public mental health concern, characterized by persistent concerns regarding physical appearance and heightened sensitivity to social scrutiny. Visually oriented cultural norms, together with algorithm-driven social media environments, have been associated with appearance-related distress, particularly among adolescents and young adults, which may adversely affect psychosocial functioning. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a comprehensive biopsychosocial etiological model of appearance anxiety through a critic

Reclaiming time as a fundamental determinant of health equity.

Health is widely recognized as shaped by social and structural conditions, yet time remains largely absent from dominant public health frameworks. This paper brings together sociological and epidemiological perspectives to argue that time is a fundamental dimension of health that has been insufficiently articulated. Rather than proposing a new determinant, it reframes time as an essential condition through which social inequalities are produced and experienced. In public health research, time is most often treated as a technical parameter, such as duration or life course stage, obscuring how i
