Nonpharmacological approaches for the treatment of urological chronic pelvic pain syndromes in men.

Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis, or urological chronic pelvic pain syndrome (UCPPS), remains a common and often challenging disorder to evaluate and treat. Employing a more holistic approach, including urological therapy, physical therapy, and psychosocial perspectives, may be more appropriate for most patients. Growing evidence supports the use of biofeedback, myofascial trigger point release, prescribed exercise regimens, relaxation techniques, and supportive counseling to treat men with UCPPS.

Alternative therapies in the treatment or oral self-injurious behavior: a case report.

This paper presents the case of a child with severe mental retardation and a history of oral self-injurious behavior (SIB). While the behavior was refractory to a number of dental interventions, some success was achieved through a combination of behavioral therapy techniques and therapeutic touch (a relaxation technique). Etiologies of SIB are discussed, along with descriptions of alternatives to traditional dental therapy for this difficult problem.

VR sculpting as a therapeutic intervention for alleviating anxiety: a case study from a university art class.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety among university students has become increasingly prominent in higher education settings, adversely affecting not only their academic performance but also their overall mental health. While medication and psychological interventions can help alleviate anxiety to some extent, it is crucial for this particular group to find more convenient, easily accepted non-pharmacological approaches. Art therapy, especially hands-on creative activities, is considered an effective means of regulating anxiety, yet research on virtual reality (VR) sculpting remains relatively scarce. OBJECT

Beneficial effect of the soluble guanylyl cyclase stimulator BAY 41-2272 on impaired penile erection in db/db-/- type II diabetic and obese mice.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and obesity are major risk factors for erectile dysfunction (ED). In diabetes, increased oxidative stress leads to decreased nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, and diabetic patients appear to be less responsive to conventional therapy with phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. We investigated whether the soluble guanylyl cyclase stimulator BAY 41-2272 (5-cyclopropyl-2-[1-(2-fluoro-benzyl)-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine-3-yl]pyrimidin-4ylamine) is effective in improving impaired corpus cavernosum (CC) relaxation in obese DM2 mice by reducing oxidative stress. Current evidence on the use of sugammadex for neuromuscular blockade antagonism during electroconvulsive therapy: a narrative review.

Depression is a common mental health problem that is associated with significant disability and mortality. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been demonstrated to be effective at resolving expression of suicidal intent in patients with depression. In less acute situations, patients are usually referred for ECT after several medication trials. Neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) are used to block tonic-clonic motor activity and associated physical harm during the delivery of ECT. Succinylcholine (Sch), with its rapid onset of muscle relaxation, short self-terminating duration of action, and

Pharmacological characterization of the nitrergic innervation of the stomach.

Proximal gastric relaxation is a vago-vagal reflex upon food intake. The efferent neurons involved at the level of the stomach are nonadrenergic noncholinergic. Deficient proximal gastric relaxation is observed in a portion of patients with functional dyspepsia, while exaggerated relaxation might contribute to the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease via triggering of transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxations. Nitric oxide (NO) is mediating, together with vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) as parallel cotransmitter, the nonadrenergic noncholinergic neurotransmission of th

CPAP improves regional lung strain rate and diaphragm velocity of relaxation in experimental self-inflicted lung injury.

BACKGROUND: Strenuous respiratory effort has been proposed as a second hit in severe acute lung injury (ALI), introducing the concept of "patient self-inflicted lung injury" (P-SILI). In an experimental setting, noninvasive continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) attenuates lung and diaphragmatic injury, but the underlying mechanisms remains elusive. Here we investigate the effects of noninvasive CPAP on global and regional lung strain and diaphragm velocity of contraction and relaxation in an experimental P-SILI model. METHODS: Lung injury was induced in Sprague Dawley rats through surfac

Enhancement of arterial relaxation by long-term atenolol treatment in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

1. The effects of long-term atenolol (25 mg kg-1 day-1) therapy on arterial function were studied in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. The 14-week treatment attenuated the increase in blood pressure by approximately 30 mmHg in SHR, but did not affect blood pressure in WKY rats. 2. Responses of mesenteric arterial rings in vitro were examined at the end of the study. The relaxation to acetylcholine was similar in WKY rats and atenolol-treated SHR and more pronounced than in untreated SHR, whereas the relaxation to the nitric oxide donor 3-morpholinosydnonimine (

The use of phosphodiesterase inhibitor (dipyridamole) to wean from inhaled nitric oxide.

A full-term, male neonate developed persistent pulmonary hypertension, and responded to high-frequency oscillatory ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide (INO). Discontinuation of INO was attempted three times and was followed by severe desaturations due to right-to-left shunt through the patent ductus arteriosus and patent foramen ovale. As a result of this rebound pulmonary hypertension, the neonate was maintained on INO therapy for 6 days. Successful discontinuation was achieved by using the phosphodiesterase inhibitor, dipyridamole. We speculate that during exogenous INO therapy, endogenous

Vascular smooth muscle cell dysfunction in diabetes: nuclear receptors channel to relaxation.

Endothelial dysfunction and impaired vascular relaxation represent a common cause of microvascular disease in patients with diabetes. Although multiple mechanisms underlying altered endothelial cell function in diabetes have been described, there is currently no specific and approved pharmacological treatment. In this edition of Clinical Science, Morales-Cano et al. characterize voltage-dependent K(+) (Kv) channels as genes regulated by pharmacological activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-b/d (PPARb/d). Diabetes altered Kv channel function leading to impaired coronary arter

Patterns of change during cognitive behavioral treatment for panic disorder.

The present investigation examined patterns of change in basic features of panic and anxiety during cognitive behavioral treatment for panic disorder. Data were collected in the context of a study comparing the efficacy of cognitive therapy (CT) and relaxation training, both administered without exposure-based treatments of any kind. Thirty-six panic disorder patients completed 10 weeks of either CT or relaxation training. Weekly measures of panic frequency, state and trait anxiety, and associated fears were obtained. Data were examined using both multivariate techniques (which conceptualize c

Carbonic anhydrase inhibition improves pulmonary artery reactivity and nitric oxide-mediated relaxation in sugen-hypoxia model of pulmonary hypertension.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a serious disease with pulmonary arterial fibrotic remodeling and limited responsiveness to vasodilators. Our data suggest that mild acidosis induced by carbonic anhydrase inhibition could ameliorate PH, but the vascular mechanisms are unclear. We tested the hypothesis that carbonic anhydrase inhibition ameliorates PH by improving pulmonary vascular reactivity and relaxation mechanisms. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were either control normoxic (Nx), or injected with Sugen 5416 (20 mg/kg, sc) and subjected to hypoxia (9% O2) (Su + Hx), or Su + Hx treated with acetazol

Tailoring Image Contrast for Cellular Magnetic Resonance Imaging using Gadolinium Chelates and Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Particles.

To investigate magnetic relaxation properties of the tailored contrast using paramagnetic gadolinium (Gd) chelates and superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (SPIOs) for cellular magnetic resonance imaging. The study included three different exposed environments with two different characteristic contrast agents which used gadodiamide (Omniscan; Gd-DTPA-BMA) and ferumoxide (Feridex; SPIO) in C6 brain cancer cells. Based on the minimal mutual interaction between these two agents in vitro, we examined the possibility of using mixture of cells that are separately labeled with two contrast agents o

Reversible abnormalities of myocardial relaxation in hypothyroidism.

Fifteen selected hypothyroid patients without symptoms or signs of cardiovascular disease and an equal number of matched control subjects underwent simultaneous recording of electrocardiogram and phono-, apex-, and echocardiography to assess dynamic systolic and diastolic left ventricular function. Both the systolic preejection period and the isovolumic relaxation period were significantly increased in the hypothyroid group. However, whereas the rate of myocardial contraction, assessed from the echocardiograph of the left ventricular posterior wall, was identical in patients and control subjec

Efficacy of ketamine, propofol, and dexmedetomidine for anesthesia in electroconvulsive therapy in treatment-resistant major depressive disorder patients: a double-blind randomized clinical trial.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the therapeutic opportunities for patients with psychological disorders when they may decline to take medication. We sought to systematically compare the anesthetic efficacy of ketamine, propofol, and dexmedetomidine for electroconvulsive therapy in treatment-resistant major depressive disorder patients. This double-blind trial enrolled treatment-resistant major depressive disorder patients (n = 85) who had been hospitalized for ECT in the Amir Kabir Hospital's psychiatric ward (Arak, Iran). The ketamine, propofol, and dexmedetomidine groups received a

Effect of Massage on Stress Indicators in Recreational Horses-A Pilot Study.

This pilot study investigated the effects of massage therapy on stress indicators in recreational horses, focusing on salivary cortisol levels, heart rate and conflict behaviors. Five recreational horses were analyzed under two experimental conditions: without and with massage treatments before riding sessions. Saliva samples were collected at four specific intervals in each condition to measure cortisol concentrations using an ELISA test. Observations of behavioral indicators and heart-rate monitoring complemented the physiological data. The results revealed that massage significantly reduced
