The distribution of mental disorders among an isolated island community in southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: It is now recognized that surveys of unique communities are important to better understand the epidemiology of mental disorders. The Zeway islanders are completely different from the surrounding cultural groups, in the midst of whom they have been living in isolation for over three centuries. OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of major mental disorders in this community. METHODS: Trained and supervised field workers were employed to conduct a door-to-door survey of the entire adult population of the islands using the Amharic CIDI (Composite Int

Factors Associated With Mortality in Appalachian Nursing Homes During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Disasters, including the recent COVID-19 pandemic, have disproportionately impacted nursing homes (NHs). NH residents experienced higher mortality during the pandemic, but not all NH were affected equally. Appalachia has a history of reduced health compared to the general United States. Therefore, this study is focused on NHs in Appalachia during the COVID-19 pandemic. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate how the neighborhood and NH characteristics are associated with mortality in Appalachian NHs during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Using publicly available datasets, incl

Neighborhood-level economic characteristics and depression and PTSD symptoms among Houstonians who have experienced Hurricane Harvey and COVID-19.

Little is known about how neighborhood economic characteristics relate to risk of depression and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the context of multiple disasters. We sampled 88 super neighborhoods in Houston, Texas and surveyed 872 residents who were living in Houston during Hurricane Harvey and COVID-19 and lived in the same residence since Hurricane Harvey, about their demographics and symptoms of depression and PTSD. Using data from the American Community Survey, we estimated neighborhood-level unemployment, median income, and income inequality (i.e., Gini coefficient). We investig

Assessment of the relationship between living alone and suicidal behaviors based on prospective studies: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Suicide, a global health concern, can be influenced by living arrangements. Hence, the objective of this systematic review was to assess the extent of the association between living alone and suicidal behaviors. We conducted a comprehensive search across eight databases for prospective studies. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals were pooled using Stata software. Nine large-scale prospective studies with 3,663,205 participants proved eligible. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the pooled prevalence of living alone was 32%. Living alone was associated with suicide attempt

Spatial scale analysis for the relationships between the built environment and cardiovascular disease based on multi-source data.

To examine what built environment characteristics improve the health outcomes of human beings is always a hot issue. While a growing literature has analyzed the link between the built environment and health, few studies have investigated this relationship across different spatial scales. In this study, eighteen variables were selected from multi-source data and reduced to eight built environment attributes using principal component analysis. These attributes included socioeconomic deprivation, urban density, street walkability, land-use diversity, blue-green space, transportation convenience,

Neighborhood Deprivation and Privilege: an Examination of Racialized-Economic Segregation and Preterm Birth, Florida 2019.

The Black-White disparity in preterm birth persists and is not fully explained by individual-level social, behavioral, or clinical risk factors. Consequently, there is increasing emphasis on understanding the role of structural and area-level factors. Racialized-economic segregation measured as the index of concentration at the extremes (ICE) simultaneously captures extremes of deprivation and privilege. Our objective was to examine associations between preterm birth (PTB) and the index of concentration at the extremes (ICE). In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed 193,957 Florida birth rec

Neighborhood Environment and Depressive Symptoms Among Chinese Older Immigrants in the United States: The Mediation Effects of Coping Resources.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Studies have shown that neighborhood environment shapes older Americans' aging experience and health. However, it remains largely unknown whether and how neighborhood environment influences the well-being of older Asian Immigrants. Guided by the neighborhood stress process model, this study aims to investigate (a) the associations between neighborhood environmental stressors and depression among Chinese older immigrants and (b) the potential mediation effects of intrapersonal (sense of mastery and sense of hopefulness) and interpersonal coping (social engagement) res

The Association between Changes in Built Environment and Changes in Walking among Older Women in Portland, Oregon.

Some cross-sectional evidence suggests that the objectively measured built environment can encourage walking among older adults. We examined the associations between objectively measured built environment with change in self-reported walking among older women by using data from the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (SOF). We evaluated the longitudinal associations between built environment characteristics and walking among 1253 older women (median age = 71 years) in Portland, Oregon using generalized estimating equation models. Built environment characteristics included baseline values and longi

Green Walkability and Physical Activity in UK Biobank: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Adults in Greater London.

Urban greenspace provides opportunities for outdoor exercise and may increase physical activity, with accompanying health benefits. Areas suitable for walking (walkability) are also associated with increased physical activity, but interactions with greenspace are poorly understood. We investigated associations of walkability and green walkability with physical activity in an urban adult cohort. We used cross-sectional data from Greater London UK Biobank participants (n = 57,726) and assessed walkability along roads and footpaths within 1000 m of their residential addresses. Additionally, we as

Association of Neighborhood Income with Clinical Outcomes Among Pregnant Patients with Cardiac Disease.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of pregnancy mortality. Socioeconomic and racial disparities in pregnancy are well established. Despite this, little is known about the impact of social determinants of health in pregnant patients with heart disease. This study aims to determine whether pregnant patients with heart disease living in lower income neighborhoods and managed at cardio-obstetrics programs have higher rates of cardiac events or preterm deliveries compared with those living in higher income neighborhoods. This is a retrospective cohort study of 206 patients between 2010 and

Neighborhood Poverty, Family Economic Well-Being, and Child Maltreatment.

This study sought to understand the relationships between neighborhood poverty, family monetary well-being, and child maltreatment. The specific research questions were as follows: (1) Is neighborhood poverty at age 1 related to child physical abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect at age 5? (2) Are these relationships mediated by family monetary well-being? The study relied on data from three waves (child ages 1, 3, and 5) of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal birth-cohort study of 4,898 children from 20 large U.S. cities. Structural equation modeling was employed

Effects of Neighborhood-level Data on Performance and Algorithmic Equity of a Model That Predicts 30-day Heart Failure Readmissions at an Urban Academic Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic data may improve predictions of clinical events. However, owing to structural racism, algorithms may not perform equitably across racial subgroups. Therefore, we sought to compare the predictive performance overall, and by racial subgroup, of commonly used predictor variables for heart failure readmission with and without the area deprivation index (ADI), a neighborhood-level socioeconomic measure. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1316 Philadelphia residents discharged with a primary diagnosis of congestive heart failure from the Univ

Impact of mobility restrictions on active aging; cross-sectional associations and longitudinal changes parallel to COVID-19 restrictions.

BACKGROUND: Meaningful activities can be done in or around home, but opportunities for participation and active aging decrease when moving in smaller areas. Active aging refers to having an active approach to life in line with one's goals, ability and opportunities. In adults over 75 years with different baseline neighborhood mobility levels, we studied active aging scores two years prior to and amid COVID-19, when governments restricted mobility of residents to slow the COVID-19 outbreak. METHODS: AGNES cohort data were collected in 2017-2018 and spring 2020. Individuals were queried about t

Living alone vs. living with someone as a predictor of mortality after a bone fracture in older age.

BACKGROUND: Living alone is a risk factor for health decline in old age, especially when facing adverse events increasing vulnerability. AIM: We examined whether living alone is associated with higher post-fracture mortality risk. METHODS: Participants were 190 men and 409 women aged 75 or 80 years at baseline. Subsequent fracture incidence and mortality were followed up for 15 years. Extended Cox regression analysis was used to compare the associations between living arrangements and mortality risk during the first post-fracture year and during the non-fracture time. All participants contri

Living arrangements and fire-related mortality amongst older people in Europe.

In Europe, a demographic transition has occurred meaning that countries have larger older adult populations who are increasingly living alone and receiving homecare rather than institutional care. Given that living alone is the greatest individual risk factor for fire mortality amongst older adults and that large differences exist in terms of both fire mortality risk and living arrangements between countries, this study investigates the association between co-living rates and fire mortality rates among older adults in Europe. Freely available datasets with aggregated European data on fire mort

Promoting activity participation and well-being among children and adolescents: a systematic review of neighborhood built-environment determinants.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to identify, evaluate, and synthesize the findings on built-environment determinants and their relation to participation in different domains of activities, including physical activity, recreational and social activities, and well-being in childhood and adolescence. INTRODUCTION: Creating supportive environments for children and adolescents is a priority in society. To ensure informed decision making and policy changes, initiatives need to rely on systematic development and the use of evidence-based knowledge. Thus, it is necessary to critically rev

Length of residence and caesarean section in migrant women in Sweden: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have reported substantial differences in caesarean rates between migrant and non-migrant women. In this study we investigate whether the association between maternal country of birth and caesarean section is modified by length of residence in Sweden. METHODS: Population-based register study. A total of 106 760 migrant and 473 881 Swedish-born women having singleton, first births were studied using multinomial multiple regression models to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals for mode of birth. Random effect meta-analyses were conducted to assess tru

Regional and seasonal effects on the gastrointestinal parasitism of captive forest musk deer.

Parasite infections can cause adverse effects on health, survival and welfare of forest musk deer. However, few studies have quantified the parasite infection status and evaluated the parasite temporal dynamics and differences between breeding centers for captive forest musk deer. The purpose of this study was to assess seasonal and regional effects on the parasite prevalence, shedding capacity, diversity, aggregation and infracommunity to establish baseline data on captive forest musk deer. The McMaster technique was applied to count parasite eggs or oocysts in 990 fecal samples collected at

Youth Homelessness: Prevalence and Associations with Weight in Three Regions.

This study investigated the utility of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) to document associations between homeless status and weight while estimating the prevalence of youth homelessness in three regions. A school-based survey, the YRBS includes youths who have been difficult to involve in past research. Analysis of 2011 YRBS data produced population-weighted estimates of youth homelessness prevalence separately for Connecticut, Delaware, and Philadelphia. Public high school students anonymously reported their housing status, height, and weight on the YRBS. Height and weight were converted
