STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Current designs of fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) have a limited lifespan, failing mainly through veneer-fiber delamination, debonding, and fracture.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to validate a new inlay-retained 2-unit cantilevered RBFDP with an optimized cavity and fiber layout proposed in a previous study by using simulated occlusal loading.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two groups of specimens (n=20), 1 with and 1 without glass fibers, were used to test the influence of the cavity design and that of the fiber

BACKGROUND: Post-and-core systems are frequently used when restoring endodontically treated teeth. CAD/CAM technologies contribute to post fabrication by improving material uniformity and adaptation to canal morphology. Additionally, 3D printing presents an emerging approach that constructs posts incrementally and may address certain limitations associated with traditional fabrication methods. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the fracture resistance of custom-made CAD/CAM posts and cores fabricated using milling and additive techniques compared to customized fiber posts.

Recently, new luting materials have been claimed to have adhesion to metal and tooth structure. This study determined if rebonding the specimens affected their tensile bond strength. Ten samples each of Rexillium III metal cylinders (12 x 6.3 mm) were bonded and rebonded with Comspan Panavia and Super-bond materials. The film thickness was controlled with a micrometer device at 20 microns. The samples were stored for 24 hours in deionized water at 37 degrees C and were then thermocycled for 24 hours and tested for tensile failure on an Instron testing machine. A stereomicroscope was used to de

OBJECTIVE: The hypothesis of this study was that the fracture load of incisor teeth restored using short, threaded, parallel-sided posts (TMP) is, under special conditions, not inferior to that of teeth restored using long TMPs or fibre-reinforced posts (FRP).
METHODOLOGY: Seventy-two maxillary incisors and 72 mandibular incisors were collected. Sixty-four in each group were root filled; in half of these FRPs were cemented, and in the other half TMPs were used. Half of the FRPs were pretreated; the others were not pretreated. In the TMP-group, half of the teeth received a long post (10 mm), t

In restorative dentistry, the lack of occlusal space may lead to the mutilation of healthy tissue in order to provide sufficient space for the restorative material. Noprep dentistry can be achieved by placing high-bite restorations, followed by Simple Orthodontic Extrusion (SOE) of other teeth to close the created open bite. This rapid, partial orthodontic treatment is well accepted by patients as it can be easily performed using simple buttons, and it takes only a few weeks to reestablish occlusal contacts. The SOE technique is a further development of the Dahl concept. It has the advantages

The effects of inflammatory activity following surgical intervention can injure pulp tissues; in severe cases it can lead to pulpal complications. With this article, the authors report on the effects of cavity preparation and restoration events and how they can interact together to reduce or increase the severity of pulpal inflammatory activity in 202 restored Class V cavities. Although some inflammatory activity was observed in the absence of bacteria, the severity of pulpal inflammatory activity was increased when cavity restorations became infected. OBJECTIVE: To develop a new method to test the fracture strength of endodontically-treated root dentin.
METHOD: Bovine tooth roots were transversely cut into 2-mm thick sections and the root canals were enlarged with a taper of 0.06. An outer layer of resin composite was bonded to each section to make the root canal-to-outer radius ratio smaller than 1/3. The resulting discs were treated with irrigants at the inner surface and then fractured by inserting through the center a steel rod of the same taper attached to a universal test system. Fracture strength was calculated by using Lame's equat

The optimal bonding of adhesives to dentin requires the sealer to be completely removed from dentinal walls. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different cleaning procedures using gutta-percha solvents on bond strength of adhesive resins to AH Plus contaminated dentin (APCD). The pulp chamber dentin surfaces were contaminated with AH Plus and cleaned with five different techniques (dry cotton, chloroform, orange oil, eucalyptol, and ethanol). Then, Clearfil SE Bond (CSE) (Kuraray), and Tetric N Bond (TNB) (Ivoclar Vivadent) were applied and filled with a composite resin. Th

Secondary caries is the primary cause of restoration failure, requiring the replacement of fillings and the progressive loss of tooth structure. Bioactive and smart restorative materials have been developed to combat this by releasing therapeutic ions (fluoride, calcium, phosphate) that promote remineralization and inhibit bacterial growth. However, clinical evidence regarding their efficacy compared with conventional inert materials remains fragmented. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of bioactive restorative materials in preventing secondary ca

PURPOSE: To evaluate if covering occlusal cavitated dentine caries lesions with limited extension (no more than one third of the bucco-lingual or disto-mesial width of the occlusal surface) in primary molars with resin-based sealing (RBS)-without previous removal of caries-would result in a lower 3-year rate of success than if all caries was removed and the cavity was filled with a resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGIC), and to assess if the experience of the two treatments differed according to evaluation performed by the children and the dentists.
METHODS: RBS and RMGIC treatments of o

The use of antibiotic-impregnated acrylic cement as a bone spacer between the intervals of revision hip arthroplasty for infection has been widely practiced. Vascular injuries caused by the migration of a cement spacer with subsequent erosion of the vessel wall have never been reported. A 67-year-old woman presented with tense swelling over her left lower extremity and hemarthroses of the left hip after implantation of a cement spacer for infected hip arthroplasty. Complete external compression of the external iliac vein and laceration of the iliac artery by the spacer were found. The symptoms

The aim of this study was to investigate whether postcuring using electron beam irradiation had an effect on the bond strength of resin-to-base-metal after priming their surfaces using silicoating methods or functional monomers. Composite cylinders were bonded on a restricted area of 5 mm2 to flat rectangular titanium and cobalt-chromium specimens. Under investigation were the silicoating system Rocatec, the thiol-phosphate system Metal Primer II and the phosphate ester SR Link. Tensile strength and shear bond strength were determined for the three test groups in each case: (i) after 24 h, (ii

This study evaluated stresses generated at maxillary central incisor (21) root restored with lithium disilicate crown (LDC), and glass fiber (GFP) or polyetheretherketone (PEEK) post. 3D models created by computed tomographic image (i-CAT Cone Beam 3D Dental Imaging System) reproduced maxillary central incisor. Each model had prosthetic LDCs (2.0 mm thick) cemented to GFP or PEEK posts with dual resin cement. Different loads were applied to each model (cervical, incisal, axial, middle). At maximum principal stress, PEEK showed higher stress than GFP in all loads, but with qualitative similarit
