A Neglected Cause of Iatrogenic Brachial Plexus Injuries in Psychiatric Patients.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric patients are often kept immobilized during hospitalization to avoid self-inflicted injuries and danger to third parties. Inadequate positioning can lead to brachial plexus injuries (BPI). OBJECTIVE: To present a series of 5 psychiatric patients with BPI after being left sedated and restrained for prolonged periods of time during hospitalization. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 5 psychiatric patients with iatrogenic BPI referred by other institutions to our service. The restraint technique adopted by those institutions consisted of a high-thoracic re

Effect of chronic stress on capsaicin-induced dental nociception in a model of pulpitis in rats.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic stress can alter nociceptive sensitivity. However, the effect of stress exposure on dental nociception has been less addressed. Therefore, the present study investigated the effects of chronic exposures to some social and psychological stresses on pulpal nociceptive responses. DESIGN: The stress groups were constructed as follows: forced swimming (n=6), restraint (n=6), and mild (n=10) and severe (n=15) crowding stresses. Rats were subjected to stress for 1h per day for a week. At the end of the stress session, pulp irritation was induced by intradental application of capsa

Repeated restraint stress lowers the threshold for response to third ventricle CRF administration.

Rats and mice exposed to repeated stress or a single severe stress exhibit a sustained increase in energetic, endocrine, and behavioral response to subsequent novel mild stress. This study tested whether the hyper-responsiveness was due to a lowered threshold of response to corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) or an exaggerated response to a standard dose of CRF. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to 3h of restraint on each of 3 consecutive days (RRS) or were non-restrained controls. RRS caused a temporary hypophagia but a sustained reduction in body weight. Eight days after the end of re

Hematological Assessment in Pet Rabbits: Blood Sample Collection and Blood Cell Identification.

Pet rabbits are presented to veterinary clinics for routine care and treatment of clinical diseases. In addition to obtaining clinical history, additional diagnostic testing may be required, including hematological assessments. This article describes common blood collection methods, including venipuncture sites, volume of blood that can be safely collected, and handling of the blood. Hematological parameters for normal rabbits are provided for comparison with in-house or commercial test results. A description of the morphology of rabbit leukocytes is provided to assist in performing a differen

Developmental differences in the effects of alcohol and stress on heart rate variability.

Adolescent rats differ in their responses to stress and ethanol from their adult counterparts, although not much is known about the contribution of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to these differences. This study assessed the impact of stress, ethanol, and their combination on parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) in adolescent and adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals were habituated to the testing box and neck sensors (MouseOX, STARR Life Sciences Corp.) used for recording heart rate (HR). After 8-10min of baseline recording, animals were restrained for 90min or returned home, foll

Agmatine abolishes restraint stress-induced depressive-like behavior and hippocampal antioxidant imbalance in mice.

Agmatine has been recently emerged as a novel candidate to assist the conventional pharmacotherapy of depression. The acute restraint stress (ARS) is an unavoidable stress situation that may cause depressive-like behavior in rodents. In this study, we investigated the potential antidepressant-like effect of agmatine (10mg/kg, administered acutely by oral route) in the forced swimming test (FST) in non-stressed mice, as well as its ability to abolish the depressive-like behavior and hippocampal antioxidant imbalance induced by ARS. Agmatine reduced the immobility time in the mouse FST (1-100mg/

Console video games, postural activity, and motion sickness during passive restraint.

We examined the influence of passive restraint on postural activity and motion sickness in individuals who actively controlled a potentially nauseogenic visual motion stimulus (a driving video game). Twenty-four adults (20.09 ± 1.56 years; 167.80 ± 7.94 cm; 59.02 ± 9.18 kg) were recruited as participants. Using elastic bands, standing participants were passively restrained at the head, shoulders, hips, and knees. During restraint, participants played (i.e., controlled) a driving video game (a motorcycle race), for 50 min. During game play, we recorded the movement of the head and torso, using

Gastric ulcer healing and stress-lesion preventive properties of pioglitazone are attenuated in diabetic rats.

Diabetes mellitus increases susceptibility to acute gastric injury and impairs ulcer healing. Pioglitazone as an agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) is used as anti-diabetic drug and has additionally gastroprotective activities. However, the effect of pioglitazone on the protection and healing of gastric mucosa under diabetic conditions is poorly understood. The aim of the present study was: 1) to compare the effects of treatment with PPARg ligand (pioglitazone) on healing of acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers and prevention of acute water immersion and rest

Seasonal variation of seclusion incidents from violent and suicidal acts in forensic psychiatric patients.

BACKGROUND: A seasonal variation in violence and suicidal behaviour has been reported in several studies with partially congruent results. Most of forensic psychiatric patients have a history of severe violent behaviour that often continues in spite of regular treatment. In the forensic psychiatric hospital environment aggressive and suicidal acts are often sudden and unpredictable. For reasons of safety, rapid and intensive coercive measures, such as seclusion and restraint, are necessary in the treatment of such patients. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether these involuntary seclusions have a sea

Correlates of restraint use in an institutional population: a replication.

BACKGROUND: Reducing inappropriate restraint is an important mission of services for people with intellectual disabilities (IDs). METHODS: In this study, 52 clients who had been restrained were compared with 52 other clients, individually matched on age, gender and level of IDs. Participants were mostly adults with severe and profound IDs in an institutional setting. RESULTS: The two groups differed on six Diagnostic Assessment for the Severely Handicapped-II (DASH-II) and three Aberrant Behaviour Checklist (ABC) scales. However, discriminant functional analysis demonstrated that only DASH-I

[New developments in stroke rehabilitation based on behavioral and neuroscientific principles: constraint-induced therapy].

Recent discoveries about the central nervous system's response to injury and how patients reacquire behavioral capabilities by training have yielded promising new therapies for neurorehabilitation. This family of interventions is termed constraint-induced (CI) therapy and is essentially behavioral in nature. Constraining movement of the arm which is less affected by the stroke and training (by shaping) the more affected arm for many hours a day for two consecutive weeks proved effective in the treatment of hemiplegia in many studies. Successful applications other than for stroke have been for

Restraint-induced stress in pregnant mice--degree of immobilization affects maternal indices of stress and developmental outcome in offspring.

Maternal stress on gestational day 8 (GD8) in the CD-1 mouse can induce a syndrome of fetal anomalies, including encephalocele, supernumerary ribs, fused ribs and vertebral anomalies. Two forms of restraint were compared for their ability to induce these defects. The two types of restraint differed in the degree of mobility afforded the dam during confinement, either total restraint in a supine position or a less confining restraint in which restrained dams could move from a supine to a non-supine position, but could not turn from front to back. Dams were exposed to either form of restraint fo

[Diurnal rhythms of body temperature, heart rate, and behaviour in the stanchioned adult Shiba goats].

Using a data logger system, body temperature (dorsal subcutaneous temperature), heart rate, ingestive or ruminating behaviour and posture in adult Shiba goats tied to a stanchion were recorded automatically during 24 hours, to obtain basic information on the biological rhythms. A 600 g of usual ration mixed with hay cube, hay, beet pulp and wheat bran was fed twice a day (morning; 9:00-9:30, evening; 16:00-16:30). Animals kept under an artificial photoperiod (12L-12D, light period; 5:30-17:30) and about 10 degrees C room temperature. 1) Diurnal patterns of the above-mentioned items were record

Stressor-like effects of FG-7142 on medial prefrontal cortex self-stimulation.

The effects of uncontrollable stress and the anxiogenic beta-carboline FG-7142 were compared on rats bar-pressing for electrical stimulation of the medial prefrontal cortex (MPC). One minute of restraint stress produced an immediate 20% increase in response rates. A significant facilitation was also evident 24 and 48 h later. Similarly, FG-7142 (10 mg/kg) produced an immediate 20% elevation of self-stimulation rates and a significant facilitation 24 and 48 h following administration. Lower (3 mg/kg) and higher (20 mg/kg) doses of FG-7142 caused immediate decreases in MPC self-stimulation and n

[Comparison of the bone tissue reaction of rats to clinostatic and head-down tilt hypokinesia].

Examination of spongy bones of rats exposed to clino- and antiorthostatic hypokinesia showed that changes in bone mass, bone cells and their precursors were similar in both cases. The bone resorption-bone formation process remained balanced. However, bone responses clino- and antiorthostatic hypokinesia exhibited certain differences. Clinostatic hypokinesia produced greater osteoporosis in the femoral bone, whereas bone losses in the humerus, sternum and pelvis were identical. Antiorthostatic hypokinesia led to osteoporosis that was identical in every bone examined. In addition, clino- and ant

Comparison of physiological indicators of chronic stress in confined and nonconfined gilts.

Two experiments were conducted to determine if confinement-induced delayed puberty in gilts was due to chronic physiological stress imposed by confinement housing. In both experiments, crossbred gilts, raised in total confinement, were moved to an outside dirt lot (nonconfined) or to a single pen in a confinement finishing unit (confined) at 100 to 110 d of age. Beginning at 150 d of age, estrus was checked daily with a boar to determine age at first estrus. Gilts were necropsied at 270 d of age. In Exp. I, 19 confined and 19 nonconfined gilts were cannulated by jugular puncture at 185 d of ag

Injuries in confined sows. Incidence and relation with behaviour.

A survey has been carried out to determine if welfare relevant differences could be found between the various systems of individual housing (stalls and tethering by neck collar, neck harness and shoulder girth) for dry sows. The pattern of lesions on the integument has been used as an indicator for well-being. The set up of this way of assessing well-being, called the Ekesbo Method, has been described briefly. Except for neck collar tethering, the sows did not show major differences in lesion level. Neck collar tethering is therefore strongly discouraged. The other systems are, to a large exte

Comparison of cardiac lesions induced in rats by isoproterenol and by repeated stress of restraint and water immersion with special reference to etiology of cardiomyopathy.

Cardiac lesions induced in rats by isoproterenol, a potent beta-agonist, and by repeated stress of restraint and water immersion, in which sensitization of beta-adrenergic receptors would be expected to be induced, were investigated morphologically and following facts were revealed. 1) Cardiac lesions induced by isoproterenol, characteristic findings of which were myocardial hypertrophy, myocardial degeneration and myocardial necrosis replaced by interstitial fibrosis, were more analogous to cardiomyopathy than myocardial infarction or cardiac hypertrophy. 2) Cardiac lesions induced by repeate
