Eight-and-a-half syndrome: a rare presentation.

Eight-and-a-half syndrome is a rare entity characterised by conjugate horizontal gaze palsy, ipsilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia and ipsilateral lower motor neuron type facial palsy. It is due to a lesion affecting median longitudinal fasciculus, paramedian pontine reticular formation and facial nerve fascicle on the same side at the level of pons. The diagnosis is easily missed as it needs detailed ocular movement examination. It is mainly caused due to infarction or demyelinating conditions. We are reporting an interesting case of a 54-year-old man with right-side eight-and-a-half syndr…

Electron microscopic investigation of rat brain after brief cardiac arrest.

Rats were submitted to 10-min cardiac arrest, followed by resuscitation and survival for 1 day, 3 days or 1 week. Five regions of interest (CA1 and CA3 sector of hippocampus, dentate gyrus, reticular nucleus of thalamus and parietal cortex) where studied by light and electron microscopy at each of the survival times, and compared with non-ischemic control rats. Cell counts revealed delayed neuronal loss of about 30% after 3 days in both CA1 and CA3 sectors. Ischemic cell changes consisting of cytoplasmic condensation and nuclear pyknosis appeared in these regions on day 7 and --to a lesser deg

Vestibular nucleus projections to the parabrachial nucleus in rabbits: implications for vestibular influences on the autonomic nervous system.

Acute vestibular dysfunction and motion sickness are characterized by autonomic effects such as pallor, nausea, and vomiting. Previous anato … rachial nucleus. Less dense terminations were observed in the ventrolateral aspect of the medullary reticular formation, the subtrigeminal nucleus, lateral tegmental field, and nucleus ambiguus. These findings have several important implications. First, they suggest that vestibular input converges directly at brain stem levels with visceral sensory input in both nucl …

The Gigantocellular Reticular Nucleus Plays a Significant Role in Locomotor Recovery after Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury.

Traditionally, the brainstem has been seen as hardwired and poorly capable of plastic adaptations following spinal cord injury (SCI). Data acquired over the past decades, however, suggest differently: following SCI in various animal models (lamprey, chick, rodents, nonhuman primates), different forms of spontaneous anatomic plasticity of reticulospinal projections, many of them originating from the gigantocellular reticular nucleus (NRG), have been observed. In line with these anatomic observations, animals and humans with incomplete SCI often show various degrees of spontaneous motor recovery

[A rotational syndrome induced by administration of the delta sleep-inducing peptide into the reticular portion of the rat substantia nigra].

Unilateral intranigral administration of a delta-sleep-induced peptide (DSIP) evoked a contralateral rotation. Naloxon prevented development of the effect whereas haloperidol administration enhanced the DSIP cataleptogenic effect.

Effects of 6-hydroxydopamine and the PNMT inhibitor LY134046 on pressor responses to stimulation of the subretrofacial nucleus in anaesthetized stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.

The subretrofacial nucleus of the rostral ventrolateral medulla is an important site for the control of sympathetic vasomotor tone and is the location of the C1 PNMT-containing cell bodies. In the present study the involvement of central monoaminergic neurons in the pressor responses evoked by chemical or electrical stimulation of this nucleus was examined in urethane-anaesthetized stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). Vehicle-treated rats were compared to animals treated with the PNMT inhibitor LY134046, the catecholamine neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) or a combination

Response of rat superior salivatory units to chorda tympani stimulation.

Unit responses to chorda tympani stimulation in urethane anesthetized rats were characterized by response latency and frequency following ability. One hundred and fifty one units responded with constant latencies, mean: 16.9 msec, S.D.: 7.8 msec. Responses recorded from within the superior salivatory nucleus (SSN) had significantly longer latencies (18.8 +/- 6.8, n = 94) than those from surrounding areas (13.5 +/- 8.3, n = 50) (p less than 0.001). This difference was due to the higher incidence of responses with latencies between 2.7 and 10 msec outside of the SSN (44%) compared to SSN respons

The dorsal horn of the spinal cord.

Recent advances in techniques, especially the intraneuronal injection of the enzyme horseradish peroxidase, have led to a new ear in our understanding of spinal cord structure and function. Input to the cord is precisely organized: the primary afferent fibres from different types of receptors distribute their anatomically specific collaterals to particular parts of the dorsal horn, afferent fibres from the skin lay down a precise somatotopic map, input to the dorsal horn from descending systems is also distributed in a localized way. The neurones of the dorsal horn are varied in both structure

An explanation of eye movements seen in internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Recent findings in experiments on monkeys show that a horizontal saccade is made by a pulse-step of neural activity, part of which rises to medial rectus (MR) motoneurons on the fibers of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF). If inhibitory as well as excitatory fibers run in the MLF, then the data show that each MLF must carry both the excitatory and inhibitory activity required for contralateral, horizontal saccades. Therefore, interruption of these fibers removes not only excitation from the ipsilateral MR but inhibition from the contralateral MR. Such a lesion also disturbs the correct

Spontaneous and synaptic excitation of paramedian reticular neurones in the decerebrate cat.

1. In decerebrate cats neurones in the region of the paramedian reticular nucleus were identified by responses to stimulation of implanted cerebellar electrodes. Approximately one half were antidromically activated and one half orthodromically. 2. Somatic stimulation and electrical stimulation of both hind limb and cranial nerves activated many of these cells. There was no correlation between the effects of these stimuli on cell firing and on blood pressure. 3. A number of rhythms in spontaneous firing were observed. One fifth of cells fired with the rhythm of efferent activity in the recurren

An immunohistochemical study of osteopontin in pigment gallstone formation.

Mucin glycoproteins from the gallbladder epithelium are thought to contribute to the matrix or nucleus of gallstones and other biomineralization systems. The involved acidic glycoproteins have been reported in bile and gallstones. In addition, osteopontin (Opn) is a noncollagenous acidic bone matrix glycoprotein that possesses calcium-binding properties. To investigate the role of Opn in pigment gallstone formation, the involvement of Opn in pigment gallstone formation was studied immunohistochemically in the gallbladder wall and in the stones. Staining for Opn was strongly positive in the epi

Immunometabolic Reprogramming of Fibroblastic Reticular Cells in the Tumor Immune Microenvironment.

Fibroblastic reticular cells (FRCs), as core stromal cells in secondary lymphoid tissues and the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME), undergo significant immunometabolic reprogramming, which regulates antitumor immune responses. This structured narrative review summarizes the immunometabolic reprogramming of FRCs across various cancers, emphasizing glucose metabolism, lipid remodeling, and amino acid metabolism in lung cancer, breast cancer, gastric cancer, lymphoma, head and neck tumors, and melanoma. Under hypoxia, nutrient stress, and inflammatory stimulation, FRCs enhance glycolysis, alte

Impairment of smooth pursuit in pontine lesions: functional topography based on MRI and neuropathologic findings.

Eye movements were studied in two patients with pontine lesions identified by magnetic resonance imaging in one patient and computerized tomography, with neuropathological correlation in another patient. Impairment of ipsilateral saccades were explained by unilateral lesion of the paramedian pontine reticular formation. Ipsilateral dorsolateral and lateral pontine nuclei lesions results in unilateral impairment of smooth pursuit. Bilateral damage to the dorsomedian pontine nuclei result in bidirectional horizontal smooth pursuit deficit, predominantly towards the more pathologic affected side.…
