Decreased nitric oxide production accounts for secondary arteriolar constriction after retinal branch vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: After retinal branch vein occlusion (BVO), the arteriole crossing the occluded territories is often constricted. This constriction persists up to several weeks and is correlated with the development of extended territories of nonperfused capillaries. These are results of an investigation supporting the hypothesis that decrease in the production of nitric oxide (NO) accounts for the observed arteriolar constriction. METHODS: Preretinal [NO] was measured using an NO microprobe in the anesthetized miniature pigs, before and during the first 4 hours after experimental branch vein occlusi

Bilateral central retinal vein occlusions in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Clinicopathologic correlation.

Four patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and central retinal vein occlusion have been previously described in the literature. The pathologic findings in a fifth patient with this association are reported. The histopathologic findings were similar to ischemic central retinal vein occlusion in persons without HIV infections. There was no evidence of HIV in vascular endothelial cells using electron microscopy and in situ hybridization techniques. The failure to identify any structural or direct infectious cause for central retina vein occlusion in this setting suggests that…

Associations between obstructive sleep apnoea and the development and severity of retinal vein occlusion.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Emerging research suggests obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) as a potential risk factor for retinal vein occlusion (RVO), but the impact of sex, race, and ethnicity, and the role of OSA in RVO progression, remains unclear. This study explored demographic differences in the association between OSA and RVO and compared the severity of RVO in patients with and without OSA. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analysed aggregated, de-identified electronic health record data of US patients. Adults who received ophthalmological services were grouped by baseline RVO …

Neovascular glaucoma associated with central retinal vein occlusion in a young patient with hyperlipidemia.

This case report presents a rare instance of neovascular glaucoma secondary to central retinal vein occlusion in a previously healthy man in his early 30s who exhibited acute unilateral vision loss, ocular pain, and elevated intraocular pressure. Ophthalmic imaging, including ultra-widefield fundus photography and optical coherence tomography, revealed retinal hemorrhages, intraretinal fluid, and iris neovascularization consistent with ischemic central retinal vein occlusion and secondary neovascular glaucoma. Notably, systemic evaluation revealed severe hyperlipidemia associated with the pati…

A Comparison of Manual and Robot Assisted Retinal Vein Cannulation in Chicken Chorioallantoic Membrane.

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a vision threatening condition occurring in the central or the branch retinal veins. Risk factors include but are not limited to hypercoagulability, thrombus or other cause of low blood flow. Current clinically proven treatment options limit complications of vein occlusion without treating the causative occlusion. In recent years, a more direct approach called Retinal Vein Cannulation (RVC) has been explored both in animal and human eye models. Though RVC has demonstrated potential efficacy, it remains a challenging and risky procedure that demands precise needl…

[A rare trauma-associated cause of central retinal vein occlusion in a young subject].

INTRODUCTION: Retinal vein occlusions are the second leading cause of retinal vascular disease, after diabetic retinopathy. In the case of young subjects, a thorough etiological investigation must be conducted in order to diagnose rare etiologies, such as this heterozygous mutation of the factor II gene associated with a central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), occurring in a young subject within the context of trauma. OBSERVATION: The case deals with a 35-year-old soldier on a mission in a conflict zone. He was the victim of blast injury as a result of the explosion of an improvised explosive …
