Mucormycosis is the second most common cause of invasive mould infection and causes disease in diverse hosts, including those who are immuno-competent. We conducted a multicentre retrospective study of proven and probable cases of mucormycosis diagnosed between 2004-2012 to determine the epidemiology and outcome determinants in Australia. Seventy-four cases were identified (63 proven, 11 probable). The majority (54.1%) were caused by Rhizopus spp. Patients who sustained trauma were more likely to have non-Rhizopus infections relative to patients without trauma (OR 9.0, p 0.001, 95% CI 2.1-42.8…

We report the clinical course of a patient who developed a Rhizopus infection of his right lung and pleural cavity, 11 months after receiving a T-cell-depleted, haploidentical donor peripheral blood stem cell transplant. Thoracotomy was performed to remove the pulmonary lesion, but residual disease in the pleural cavity was noted. Treatment with amphotericin B was complicated by the development of severe renal dysfunction, necessitating alternative antifungal therapy. Treatment was initiated with the investigational triazole posaconazole. Despite concurrent treatment with corticosteroids for g…

Mucormycosis infections, caused by fungi of the families Rhizopus, Mucor or Absidia, are typically rapidly progressive and often fatal. We report a 27-year-old male with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) developing an invasive pulmonary-CNS mucormycosis during the neutropenic period after salvage induction chemotherapy; the infection was successfully controlled with surgery and antifungal therapy. The patient received two courses of consolidation chemotherapy and underwent autologous stem cells transplantation (ASCT) while receiving secondary antifungal systemic prophylaxis with liposomal Amphoteri…

Macadamia nutshell, an abundant agro-industrial byproduct, afforded 5 new and 25 known compounds in our investigation, in which macyclophanes A-C feature rare 5-alkylresorcinol-derived 6/18/6 macrocyclic framework reported for the first time. Moreover, new compound macyclophane A showed the most potent bioactivity against Rhizopus stolonifer, with a MIC value of 16 μg/mL, and was associated with disruption of plasma membrane integrity and leakage of cellular contents. Furthermore, macyclophane A suppressed R. stolonifer infection of strawberry effectively, comparable to myclobutanil. The findi…

Zygomycosis, a relatively uncommon infection, usually occurs among immunocompromised individuals. It has been reported only rarely in trauma patients. A fatal case is reported of pulmonary and rapidly progressive cutaneous zygomycosis in a young, otherwise healthy farmer, with multiple bone fractures, wounds and soft tissue injuries after an accident with an agricultural machine in the field. Rhizopus spp. was isolated from both cultures of bronchial washings and wound samples. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination of tissue specimens from a large wound. Despite systemic…

Solid-state fermentation (SSF) is widely used to enhance the functional properties of plant-based substrates. In this study, soybean powder was used as a substrate for SSF with Rhizopus oligosporus for up to 20 days. SSF altered the physical properties of soybean, increasing its water-holding capacity by 1.4-fold, water-swelling capacity by 1.64-fold, oil-absorption capacity by 1.55-fold, and cholesterol-binding capacity by 1.49-fold at pH 2.0. Biochemical characterization of fermented soybean showed a 3.13-fold higher TPC, a 3.84-fold higher TFC, and a 2.52-fold higher TSC. L-carnitine conten…

Primary cutaneous mucormycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection caused by the order Mucorales, most frequently by the Rhizopus species. Both systemic factors, such as diabetes mellitus or malignancies and local factors disrupting the skin barrier are implicated in development of this entity. The initial manifestation is a red-to-black papule rapidly progressing to a necrotic and painful ulcer. Diagnosis is obtained by identification of fungal forms in a skin biopsy, typically showing branching and non-septate hyphae. The clinical course is highly variable and depends mostly on the fungal i…
