INTRODUCTION: An aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign, but expansile tumor like lesion that generally occurs in the long bones including the vertebral column. An aneurysmal bone cyst arising from the rib, especially in the elderly, is extremely rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 58-year-old Turkish woman with an aneurysmal bone cyst of the right 3rd rib treated with chest wall resection. The pathologic findings confirmed the diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst. The patient has been followed up for 5 years with no evidence of recurrence.
CONCLUSION: En bloc resection can be curative and provide g

Horner's syndrome after trauma is rare. After visual diagnosis, a search for the cause is urgent due to possible life threatening damage. Intracerebral bleeding and carotid dissection must be excluded. Traumatic Horner's syndrome often seems to be, as in the case described here, caused by a fracture of the first rib. As persistent symptoms are not described, conservative therapy is recommended.

Most patients with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) present with exercise-induced upper extremity paresthesia. Neurogenic TOS is the most common type where the brachial nerve plexus is compressed against a tight thoracic outlet. Vascular compromise although rare can result from thoracic outlet pressure against the subclavian artery or more commonly the subclavian vein. This article reviews the pathophysiology of TOS and describes several effective surgical interventions. Complete first rib resection with surgical decompression is an essential part of the treatment for TOS. First rib resection vi

INTRODUCTION: Ear malformations are mainly isolated deformations but exist also in combination with various syndromes. A visible malformation in cases of microtia is a problem for the entire family. Auricular reconstruction with autologous cartilage has been well established in the last decade. Optimization of the technique has led to improved and reliable results.
OPERATION AND RESULTS: Based on the experience of 120 cases we developed a concept that allows total ear reconstruction in two operative steps. In the first operation autologous rib cartilage is harvested and a natural framework is

AIM: To determine whether ultrasound is useful in detecting cervical rib. Ultrasound was used to diagnose cervical rib in five patients with neck pain and the findings were compared to those from plain radiography.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ultrasound was used in 34 patients with pain and stiffness in the neck region. The area concerned was scanned sonographically in both longitudinal and transverse planes. In the sitting position, plain radiographs were obtained after ultrasound examination for comparison and verification. The contralateral side of the neck was used as control.
RESULTS: Sonogr

Solitary plasmocytoma is a rare tumor accounting for 5% of all plasma cell neoplasias. The diagnosis is based on identification of the localized tumor composed of monoclonal plasma cells identical to those observed in multiple myeloma, and absence of the signs in favor of a disseminated form. We report the case of a52-year-old man who presented a growth of the chest wall in the left axillary region. Imaging disclosed a mass of tissue with a large zone of osteolysis of the 6th rib and infiltration of the chest wall. Surgical biopsy for pathology study and immunohistochemistry enabled the diagno

An aneurysmal bone cyst involving the rib is very rare. Forty-four cases have been reported in the literature. Primary neoplasms of the ribs are uncommon and malignant tumours are significantly more common than benign tumours in this location. The condition is a rare benign, progressive bone tumour. The aetiology and natural history are unknown. The Authors report the case of a 38-year-old man with an aneurysmal bone cyst of the right 6th rib, treated by en-bloc resection. The patient has been followed up now for ten years with no signs of recurrence.

The authors present their experience with the correction of deformities of the nasal saddleback using rib cartilage grafts. They present a review of international literature on this topic, analyzing 33 patients selected from 452 cases of rhinoplasties performed between January 1990 and December 2004 at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the University of Rome "Tor Vergata." Nasal saddleback is one of the most complicated defects to correct surgically. It can be a consequence of nasoethmoid-orbital fractures and is in this case associated with other evident signs like telec

When the thoracic somitic mesoderm was separated from the neural tube and the notochord with a piece of aluminum foil in two-day chick embryos, seven days after the operation ribs lacked their proximal part. The embryos were rescued by co-transplanting the notochord, the ventral half of neural tube, or QT6 cells transformed with Shh, on the somite side of the aluminum foil insert. Thus, proximal rib development depends on the notochord and the ventral neural tube, an effect which might be mediated through Shh secreted by these axial tissues. On the other hand, when the thoracic somitic mesoder…

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are rare, especially in the ribs. This lesion is considered to be a benign process, which is usually found in children and young adults. This case, however, concerns a 71-year-old patient, the oldest patient hitherto reported in Japan, and also as old as in any other published case report worldwide. Although positron emission tomography (PET) demonstrated an uptake at the lesion, two biopsies could not reveal a precise preoperative diagnosis. The clinical manifestations, etiology, pathology, and current treatment are briefly discussed. Due to difficulties in the pre…

Short rib polydactyly syndrome (SRPS) consists of a group of lethal skeletal dysplasias presenting with short limbs and ribs, hypoplastic thorax and polydactyly with or without visceral abnormalities. The authors report a case of SRPS in a fresh stillborn baby who had these features along with dysplastic kidneys. Clinical and radiological findings in this baby were consistent with SRPS - Type I (Saldino-Noonan Type). The diagnosis of SRPS, as in this case, can be made by antenatal ultrasonography.

Thoracic and lumbar injuries can dramatically affect a rower's performance and lead to time lost from practice and competition. Even though the number of injuries encountered by elite and competitive rowers appears to have increased over the past 20 years, rowing-specific research has been very limited in its scope and ability to guide practitioners caring for these athletes. Specifically, case reports relating to rib stress fractures abound, yet very few controlled studies discuss the mechanisms of injury and appropriate management of thoracic injuries. We believe that the identification and

Tuberculosis involving ribs and presenting with breast mass is a very rare entity and only a few cases have been reported in the literature previously. A 35 year-old patient had a retromammarial abscess revealed by a mass in the medial quadrant of right breast. Midsternal incision for abscess drainage and a partial resection of involved ribs was performed. Histopathologic evaluation revealed rib tuberculosis and secondary abscess formation in the right breast. This unusual manifestation of tuberculosis should be included in differential diagnosis of high-risk patients presenting with a breast …

OBJECTIVE: Rib fractures are uncommon in infancy and, when diagnosed, often raise the suspicion of child abuse. However, the prevalence of other causes of rib fractures has not been well defined. The purpose of this study was to determine the causes and clinical presentations of rib fractures in infants <12 months old.
METHODS: Retrospectively, we identified all infants with rib fractures under 12 months old over a 3-year period using computerized databases at the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and at the Children's Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Data extracted

Stress fractures in children are rare compared with the incidence in adults. This report describes an 11-year-old girl with stress fractures of the acromion, clavicle, and first rib on the left and contralateral fractures of the first and second ribs. It was eventually discovered that these fractures were caused by a nervous tic consisting of repetitive, vigorous shrugging and translation of the shoulders.

A combination of noninvasive treatment modalities applied with basic biomechanical principles of motion was successful in treating an athlete with rare underlying skeletal anomalies. Back strains with recurrence or atypical findings require further workup. With such cervical rib anomalies, an athlete needs to be examined for thoracic outlet syndrome.

Down's syndrome (DS), a human genetic abnormality usually caused by an extra chromosome 21, presents a wide range of major and minor anomalies, the most significant of which are mental retardation and congenital heart defects. The anomalous phenotype also includes short stature and neck, thin calvaria, and cartilage hypoplasia. The genesis of these skeletal features is unknown. Histopathologic sections of fetal cartilage from skull, vertebra, rib, and femur were studied in 16 fetuses with DS (17-22 wk old) and 13 control non-DS fetuses (19-22 wk old) with other pathologies not directly affecti

Experimental scoliosis with the potential for marked progression was treated by rib resection without spinal fusion to investigate the corrective effect of rib resection on progressive scoliosis. Forty chickens were divided into two groups (groups A and B) and pinealectomy was performed at 3 days of age. In group B, three ribs were resected on the concave side if scoliosis of > 20 degrees developed before the age of 4 weeks. Spinal radiographs were taken until the age of 20 weeks at 4-week intervals to evaluate the scoliosis. Chickens in group A developed severe scoliosis (24-85 degrees) that …
