Consequently, lung oedema (LOE) should develop during PEEP more slowly with LF at atmospheric pressure (LFAP) than with LF against jugular venous pressure (LFJVP). OBJECTIVES: Normal saline (NS) and Ringer's lactate (RL) are the most common crystalloids used for fluid therapy. Despite evidence of possible harm associated with NS (eg, hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, impaired kidney function and death), few large multi-centre randomised trials have evaluated the effect of these fluids on clinically important outcomes. We conducted a pilot trial to explore the feasibility of a large trial powered for clinically important outcomes.
DESIGN: FLUID was a pragmatic pilot cluster randomised cross-over trial.

An intact male Pointer aged 9 year was found to have atrial fibrillation (AF). Thoracic radiography and echocardiography as well as routine blood work revealed no cardiac disease. Thus, the dog was diagnosed as lone AF. The arrhythmia disappeared 6 hr after the initiation of the supportive therapy, and relapse was not observed.

The action of 2 topic agents on the thrombosis of the carotid artery after microsuture was studied in rats. These drugs were magnesium sulfate whose antithrombotic effect has been demonstrated in vitro, and Ringer lactate considered inactive on coagulation. Twenty-two randomized rats underwent an end-to-end microsuture of the primitive carotid artery, the solutions being used to wash the lumen of the vessel and to irrigate the operative field. Arterial patency was controlled after one hour and after 10 days. No statistically significant difference was found between the two series.

We asked 31 anesthesiologists, who were on the Japanese Board of Anesthesiology, about inadvertent injection of drugs into the epidural space, and received answers from 28 (90%). The effects of acute normovolemic hemodilution on hemodynamics, oxygen transport, tissue perfusion and blood volume were studied.
