Root fractures are rare occurrences through all dental injuries. They comprise only 0.5% to 7.0% of traumas affecting the permanent teeth. Generally the cervical and middle thirds of the roots are affected. The healing of these lesions depends on the health of the pulp, dentine, cementum, and alveolar bone. These case reports describe the management and 2-year follow-up of 3 maxillary central incisors with horizontal root fractures treated with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) as apical plug.

External resorption is sequelae of necrotic periodontal membrane over a large area of root following an injury to the tooth. This usually occurs after severe dental injuries such as intrusion, severe luxations or exarticulation injuries complicated by a prolonged extra oral period. This case report presents a clinical and radiographic follow up (13 months) of treatment of inflammatory external root resorption on maxillary central incisor using Vitapex. Gradual healing of resorption was observed radiographically with no tenderness or pathological mobility.

In an avulsed tooth with an open apex, a recommended procedure is to coat the root surface with topical doxycycline before reimplantation. Doxycycline, a derivative of the tetracycline family, has an antibacterial effect and anti-inflammatory qualities, and is effective in reducing inflammatory and replacement resorption following dental trauma. Treating the root surface of an avulsed closed apex tooth is a rational and recommended procedure. A case is presented in which an avulsed closed apex tooth, conditioned with topical doxycycline, was reimplanted in the socket. At follow-up, 16 months l

This case report describes the nonsurgical endodontic treatment and intentional replantation of a mandibular molar and its nearly 14-year follow-up. A 56-year-old woman sought treatment with complaint of discomfort and sensitivity in the mandibular left area. The radiographic examination showed that the mandibular left first molar was endodontically treated, with over-instrumentation of the distal root and unsatisfactory obturation on the mesial root. A large periapical lesion was observed surrounding the roots. In view of the patient's limited interocclusal space and objection to undergo an a

A gross extrusion of endodontic obturation materials occurred from tooth 3 into the right maxillary sinus. The patient had never been conscious of uncomfortable symptoms, both at tooth 3 or buccal regions. A computed tomographic (CT) scan showed cord-like foreign substances extruded from the apex of the tooth and the hyperplasticity of the sinal mucosa. The surgical removal of foreign substances and partial curettage of sinal mucosa were indicated to prevent the possibility of sinus infection. At the 4-month recall, the patient was symptom free. This case emphasizes that an open apex can becom

The reliability of two commonly used methods of sealability testing, dye leakage under normal atmospheric pressure and dye leakage in a partial vacuum, was tested using a repeated studies design. Forty extracted teeth were instrumented and obturated using lateral condensation of gutta-percha and Sealapex sealer. One-half of the teeth were placed in India ink under normal atmospheric pressure and the other half underwent air evacuation before immersion in the ink. After 24 h the teeth were removed from the ink and rendered transparent for linear leakage analysis. A second study, repeated within

Careful management of fused teeth is essential as abnormal morphology can predispose a tooth to caries and periodontal disease. In this paper, a rare case of successful endodontic management of unilateral mandibular third molar fused to a distomolar is reported. Caries was removed from the tooth complex under local anaesthesia. The pulp chambers of the third molar and supernumerary tooth were accessed and the root canals were prepared using rotary instrumentation and copious irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite. Obturation using the lateral condensation technique with gutta-percha and AH26

Periapical surgery is required when periradicular pathosis associated with endodontically treated teeth cannot be resolved by nonsurgical root canal therapy (retreatment), or when retreatment was unsuccessful, not feasible or contraindicated. Endodontic failures can occur when irritants remain within the confines of the root canal, or when an extraradicular infection cannot be eradicated by orthograde root canal treatment. Foreign-body reponses towards filling materials, towards cholesterol crystals or radicular cysts might prevent complete periapical healing. Following enhanced microsurgical

BACKGROUND: Perforating internal root resorption (IRR) represents a rare and challenging endodontic condition that may require a combined nonsurgical and surgical approach for effective management.
METHODS: A 24-year-old female presented with pain on biting and discoloration of the maxillary right lateral incisor. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) confirmed perforating IRR associated with apical periodontitis. Initial non-surgical disinfection was performed using calcium hydroxide as an intracanal medicament. Persistent intracanal exudation necessitated surgical intervention under an opera

The authors, in previous studies, showed that morphological alterations on gold coated brass pins, extracted after some years of staying in dental roots, are the consequence of a localized corrosion attack, produced by anaerobic bacteria, whose presence is confirmed by the high concentration of sulphur on the most attacked spots. Since, by using a suitable technique of pin inserting, the corrosion should not occur, it was supposed that root resorption could lead to favourable conditions to create corrosion. In order to bear out this assumption, 10 meaningful clinical cases of teeth previously

Literature review There is a paucity of information on the concise relationship between endodontics and orthodontics during treatment planning decisions. This relationship ranges from effects on the pulp from orthodontic treatment and the potential for resorption during tooth movement, to the clinical management of teeth requiring integrated endodontic and orthodontic treatment. This paper reviews the literature based on the definition of endodontics and the scope of endodontic practice as they relate to common orthodontic-endodontic treatment planning challenges. Literature data bases were ac

INTRODUCTION: MTA Fillapex (Angelus Solucoes Odontologicas, Londrina PR, Brazil) was introduced as a mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-based sealer used for endodontic obturation. There is a lack of research that evaluates the ability of different solvents to soften MTA-based sealers during retreatment. This study tested the ability of 4 commonly used endodontic solvents to soften gutta-percha and MTA Fillapex to allow for the re-establishment of apical patency.
METHODS: Eighty-six extracted maxillary anterior teeth were instrumented to the working length to a size 45 (.04 taper size). Teeth w

The purpose of this study was to examine coverage patterns of sealer on canal walls and between gutta-percha cones after lateral condensation. Ninety extracted teeth with single canals were evenly and randomly divided into three sealer groups (Roth's, Sealapex, AH 26). Canals were cleaned and shaped, then coated with one of the three sealers followed by lateral condensation of gutta-percha. The teeth were placed into 100% humidity at 37 degrees C. After 4 months the roots were notched and fractured longitudinally and the dentin lifted to expose the gutta-percha sealer and dentin walls. Qualita

INTRODUCTION: Dens invaginatus is a rare developmental anomaly that occurs during odontogenesis, with a higher prevalence in the Caucasian race and no significant sex predilection; it can be bilateral. This anomaly occurs in approximately 1.26% of the teeth, and the maxillary lateral incisor is most often affected.
METHODS: This case report describes a female patient with dens invaginatus in the maxillary right conoid lateral incisor. The patient presented to Araçatuba School of Dentistry, Universidade Estadual Paulista, São Paulo, Brazil, in 1995 with an acute periapical abscess in the palat
