BACKGROUND: In our study we evaluate a personally developed surgical technique that, when used for abdominal hysterectomy, helps prevent posthysterectomy vaginal wall prolapse.
METHODS: We have used this modified surgical procedure in 244 consecutive abdominal hysterectomies performed from January 1973 through December 1986, compared with 133 abdominal hysterectomies performed without this new procedure. Patients returned monthly and annually thereafter for follow-up. The longest follow-up period to date is 12 years.

METHODS: We compared microarray gene expression profiles in pelvic connective tissue from women with POP and nonprolapse controls. An inguinal hernia containing a parovarian cyst is extremely rare. This phenomenon occurred in a 77-year-old woman who presented with a right groin hernia. The hernia contained a cystic mass that arose between the leaves of the broad ligament and passed with the round ligament through the deep inguinal ring. Through a midline incision the hernial content was mobilized, reduced through the inguinal ring and removed from the abdomen with both ovaries, tubes and uterus. The mass was found to be a parovarian cyst of the mesothelial type.

A case of endometriosis infiltrating the inguinal ligament is presented. As a rare condition involving of the extraperitoneal portion of the round ligament was not seen.
