Overview of anthelmintic resistance of gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants in Brazil.

Frequent and inappropriate use of all classes of antiparasitic drugs in small ruminants has led to failures in their effectiveness, culminating in a global problem of anthelmintic resistance. Brazil stands out as one of the world's leaders in publications about anthelmintic resistance, and for having the most numerous reports of this resistance in small ruminants in the Americas. These studies have involved mainly the fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) and its correlation with field management practices. In vivoeffectiveness testing is conducted in areas where livestock is of greater econo…

Seroepidemiological Survey of Rift Valley Fever Virus in Ruminants in Garissa, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne zoonotic disease caused by phlebovirus in the family Bunyaviridae. In Kenya, major outbreaks occurred in 1997-1998 and 2006-2007 leading to human deaths, huge economic losses because of livestock morbidity, mortality, and restrictions on livestock trade. AIM: This study was conducted to determine RVF seroprevalence in cattle, sheep, and goats during an interepidemic period in Garissa County in Kenya. METHODS: In July 2013, we performed a cross-sectional survey and sampled 370 ruminants from eight RVF-prone areas of Garissa County. Rift …

Serological and Molecular Evidence of Q Fever in Domestic Ruminants in Bangladesh.

The objective of this study was to know the herd and animal level prevalence of Q fever in domestic ruminants in some selected districts in Bangladesh. Randomly collected 111 bulk milk and 94 sera samples of cattle, sheep, and goats were tested by indirect ELISA (iELISA). DNA extracted from 23 aborted fetal membranes was analyzed by real time (rt) PCR. The positive cut-off value of iELISA in bulk milk and individual animal sera was ≥30% and ≥40%, respectively. The overall herd level prevalence of Q fever in dairy cattle was 15.6%. The prevalence of Q fever in dairy cattle was significantly hig…

Diversity of Haemaphysalis-associated piroplasms of ruminants in Central-Eastern Europe, Hungary.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of genetic variants are being recognized among piroplasms, but the precise taxonomical status, the tick vector and the geographical range of several species or genotypes are still unknown. Bovine piroplasmosis was reported to re-emerge in north-east Hungary. Because Theileria-infection was newly diagnosed in one cattle herd in the same region of the country, the aim of this study was to molecularly identify the relevant agent, to find its local vector tick species, and to examine the range of Babesia/Theileria spp. of ruminants in Haemaphysalis sp. ticks collecte…

Leptospira spp. infection in wild ruminants: a survey in Central Italian Alps.

Leptospirosis is an important zoonotic disease diffused worldwide, and wildlife species are commonly considered to be important epidemiologi … lving the cortical parenchyma. In this study, antibodies to Leptospira spp. were infrequent in wild ruminants, and only red deer seemed to be sensitive to the infection. Given the low presence and the fact that there was no record of Leptospira spp. infections in cattle, sheep, goats and also hunters in area during the study period, wild ruminants in Alpine …

Mycoplasmoses of ruminants in France: recent data from the national surveillance network.

BACKGROUND: Ruminant mycoplasmoses are important diseases worldwide and several are listed by the World Organization for Animal Health to be of major economic significance. In France the distribution of mycoplasmal species isolated from clinical samples collected from diseased animals upon veterinary request, is monitored by a network known as VIGIMYC (for VIGIlance to MYCoplasmoses of ruminants). The veterinary diagnostic laboratories collaborating with VIGIMYC are responsible for isolating the mycoplasmas while identification of the isolates is centralized by the French Food Safety Agency (A…

Seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii in domestic ruminants in Gran Canaria Island, Spain.

Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of Q fever, a zoonosis with worldwide occurrence. In the Canary Islands, the overall seroprevalence in humans has been estimated to be 21.5%. Gran Canaria island concentrates the highest ruminant population in the archipelago and the prevalence of the human infection is 23.5%. To evaluate the seroprevalence in livestock and the affected areas in Gran Canaria island, a total of 1249 ruminants were randomly selected for this study (733 goats, 369 sheep and 147 cattle). The samples were evaluated using an indirect ELISA Kit. The results showed seroprevalen…

Occurrence of Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia duodenalis in healthy adult domestic ruminants.

To determine the prevalence and intensity of infection of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis in healthy adult domestic ruminants, faecal samples were collected from 379 cattle of between 3 and 13 years old, 446 sheep and 116 goats selected at random from 60 dairy farms and 38 and 20 herds, respectively, in Galicia (NW Spain). Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts were detected in 32 cows (8.4%), 24 sheep (5.3%) and in nine goats (7.7%) from, respectively, 48.3% of the farms and 34.2 and 30.0% of the herds. The intensity of infection in cows ranged between 25 and 5,924 oocysts per gram of faece…

Graze: a program to analyze recordings of the jaw movements of ruminants.

Graze is a user friendly, Microsoft Windows 95/NT program for analyzing jaw movement recordings taken with the IGER Behavior Recorder. The program displays a plot of the jaw movement amplitude (vertical axis) against time (horizontal axis). Individual jaw movements can be automatically identified, using amplitude and frequency criteria specified by the user. Bouts of jaw movements can then be analyzed and are automatically identified as either grazing or ruminating. Behaviors other than grazing and ruminating (such as drinking or eating supplements) can also be identified and marked by the use

Effects of exogenous somatotropin (ST) on gonadal function in ruminants and swine.

During the past 15 years, many investigators have examined the effects of somatotropin (ST) on growth and lactation in farm animals. Through … ent with rbSt increases the numbers of small follicles, but does not increase the ovulatory rate of ruminants. Doses of ST similar to those used to increase milk production do not affect the secretion of testosterone or spermatogenesis in rams or bulls. Stimulatory and inhibitory effects of exogenous ST on reproductive function of gilts have been reported. …

Current ideas on the pathophysiology and treatment of lantana poisoning of ruminants.

Lantana poisoning in ruminants results from the ingestion of toxic varieties of the plant Lantana camara, which contain the triterpene acids lantadene A and lantadene B. Poisoning results in intrahepatic cholestasis and the consequences of the liver injury include jaundice, photosensitisation and ruminal stasis. The decreased ruminal motility causes toxic material to be retained in the rumen and continuous absorption of toxins from the rumen maintains the disease. Lantana poisoning can best be treated by preventing further absorption of toxins. This can be achieved by giving a large quantity o…

Ruminal metabolism of serotonin metabolites in cattle.

Metabolism of serotonin (5-HT) by gut microorganisms has been demonstrated in several species. However, information regarding 5-HT metabolism by rumen microbiota remains limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate ruminal metabolism of 5-HT-related metabolites and subsequent changes in circulating concentrations in bovines following oral administration of 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). In vitro incubation of rumen fluid with 5-HTP (100 µM), 5-HT (100 µM), or 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA; 100 µM) were assessed to evaluate the degradation and metabolization of these compounds. Rumination and Rejection Sensitivity: A Meta-Analysis.

Rumination and rejection sensitivity are positively associated with maladaptive outcomes and have been identified as vulnerability factors for psychological disorders, such as depression and anxiety. These constructs share cognitive features, including negative biases and repetitive self-focused thinking, though they are described as conceptually distinct. Several studies have evaluated the association between these constructs, although there is no consensus on the degree of overlap across findings. The present meta-analytic study examined the relationship between rumination and rejection sens
