A longitudinal study of rumination and distraction in formerly depressed inpatients and community controls.

The response styles theory (S. Nolen-Hoeksema, B. E. Wisco, & S. Lyubomirsky, 2008) supposes that ruminative coping is a cognitive risk factor for the course of depression, whereas distractive coping has protective effects. The authors present a longitudinal study on reciprocal relations between coping styles and depressive symptoms. They investigated 82 formerly depressed inpatients 4 weeks, 6 months, and 3.5 years after hospital discharge together with 76 age- and gender-matched community controls. Depressive symptoms predicted future symptom-focused rumination over the initial short-term in

Unravelling antecedents and bidirectional impacts of nurse work rumination: a scoping review to enhance nurses' well-being and improve nursing quality.

BACKGROUND: Globally, work rumination is a common phenomenon related to nurse burnout. However, most existing studies focus on the single negative impacts of rumination, with less exploration of its dual effects and antecedents. Therefore, comprehensively exploring the effect of nurse work rumination and its influencing factors is crucial for enhancing the accuracy of nursing management. OBJECTIVES: Identify the antecedents and dual effects of nurse work rumination to deepen understanding of this phenomenon and provide references for formulating interventions that enhance nurses' well-being a

Circuit based anti-correlation, attention orienting, and major depression.

Major depression is a multidimensional disorder producing emotional dysregulation, cognitive impairment, and neuro-vegetative symptoms. A pathophysiological model of depression needs to explain how these dimensions interact to produce specific clinical phenotypes and how these interactions may predict remission to specific treatments. It is unlikely that major depression results from discrete brain lesions. Here we propose to define major depression as a disorder of neural networks. We review evidence suggesting that the dynamics of neural networks involved in allocation of attention resources

The Impact of Self-Perceived Burden on Loneliness in Stroke Patients: The Mediating Role of Rumination.

BACKGROUND: Stroke outcomes are often measured through objective scales, which may neglect subtle cognitive changes and fail to capture patients' subjective experiences of recovery and quality of life. This study aimed to examine the interrelations among self-perceived burden, loneliness, and rumination in stroke survivors through the patient-reported outcomes and to provide theoretical insights and intervention strategies for improving psychological well-being and quality of life in stroke patients. METHODOLOGY: Data from 1024 stroke patients who aged 18 years and above were prospectively co

Rumination as a Mediator of the Association Between Racial Discrimination and Depression Among Black Youth.

BACKGROUND: Racial discrimination constitutes a significant risk factor for depressive symptoms among Black youth. Rumination, a maladaptive self-regulatory stress response, is a notable pathway by which racial discrimination contributes to depressive symptoms among racial/ethnic minority adults. Yet, examinations of the mechanistic nature of rumination in the context of racial discrimination among racial/ethnic minority youth remain limited. The present study investigated rumination as a mediator of the association between racial discrimination and depressive symptoms among Black youth. METH

Effects of alcohol, rumination, and gender on the time course of negative affect.

This study modelled associations between gender, ruminative cognitive style, alcohol use, and the time course of negative affect over the course of 43,111 random assessments in the natural environment. Participants (N   =   263) completed 49 days of experience sampling over 1.3 years. The data indicated that rumination at baseline was positively associated with alcohol dependence symptoms at baseline as well as higher negative affect over the course of the study. Consistent with negative reinforcement models, drinking served to decrease the persistence of negative affect from moment to moment.

The association between ruminative thinking and negative interpretation bias in social anxiety.

Cognitive models propose that both, negative interpretations of ambiguous social situations and ruminative thoughts about social events contribute to the maintenance of social anxiety disorder. It has further been postulated that ruminative thoughts fuel biased negative interpretations, however, evidence is rare. The present study used a multi-method approach to assess ruminative processing following a social interaction (post-event processing by self-report questionnaire and social rumination by experience sampling method) and negative interpretation bias (via two separate tasks) in a student

A prospective examination of predictors of post-event processing following videotaped exposures in group cognitive behavioural therapy for individuals with social phobia.

Following social events, individuals with social phobia engage in post-event processing (PEP), namely a post-mortem detailed analysis of a social situation. This study aimed to examine cognitive and symptom correlates of PEP, as well as stability of PEP, in the context of videotaped exposures that occurred during treatment at sessions four and eight. Before treatment, 75 individuals with DSM-IV diagnosed social phobia completed measures of social anxiety, anxious rumination, fear of causing discomfort to others, and negative interpretation of positive social events. They rated their peak anxie

Nosce te ipsum--Socrates revisited? Controlling momentary ruminative self-referent thoughts by neuromodulation of emotional working memory.

It becomes ever more evident that cognitive operations serve as fundamental mechanisms underlying higher order ruminative thoughts. In this sham controlled within subjects study, we performed anodal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in 32 healthy participants. We tested the causal hypothesis that the relationship between DLPFC activity and ruminative thinking is mediated by working memory operations. We used the Internal Shift Task, a paradigm in which participants have to update and shift between specific (non)emotional represe

Schizotypy is a multidimensional construct encompassing clinical and subclinical expressions of schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology that … ions and increased distress from emotions. Positive schizotypy was associated with increased use of rumination, cognitive reappraisal, distraction, and suppression, whereas negative schizotypy was associated with decreased awareness of emotions and decreased use of ER strategies, including cognitive reappraisal, distraction, sharing with others, and acceptance. Identity Functioning and Eating Disorder Symptomatology: The Role of Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies.

Introduction: Adolescence is the most critical life period for the development of eating disorder (ED) symptomatology. Although problems in identity functioning and emotion dysregulation have been proven important risk and maintaining factors of ED symptomatology, they have never been integrated in a longitudinal study. Methods: The present study is part of the Longitudinal Identity research in Adolescence (LIA)-study and aimed to uncover the temporal interplay between identity functioning, cognitive emotion regulation, and ED symptomatology in adolescence. A total of 2,162 community adolescen

Associations between goal orientation and suicidal thoughts and behaviors at one-month follow-up: Indirect effects through ruminative flooding.

Previous research has identified both goal orientation and ruminative flooding as potential risk factors for suicidal thoughts and behaviors, as well as positive associations between goal orientation and rumination. The present study examined whether the association between goal orientation and suicidal thoughts and behaviors, assessed one month later, was accounted for by ruminative flooding. A sample of 924 psychiatric outpatients (Mage = 39.09 years, SD = 14.82, range = 18 to 84; 61.7% female; 37.0% White) completed self-report and interview measures at baseline and provided information abo

The effects of hypnotherapy compared to cognitive behavioral therapy in depression: a NIRS-study using an emotional gait paradigm.

Hypnotherapy (HT) is a promising approach to treating depression, but so far, no data are available on the neuronal mechanisms of functional reorganization after HT for depressed patients. Here, 75 patients with mild to moderate depression, who received either HT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), were measured before and after therapy using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. We investigated the patients' cerebral activation during an emotional human gait paradigm. Further, rumination was included as predictor. Our results showed a decrease of functional connectivity (FC) between two r

The interaction between 5-HTTLPR genotype and ruminative thinking on BMI.

Negative affect or stress is often found to increase energy intake for high palatable energy-rich foods and hence weight gain. Reduced brain serotonin (5-HT) function is known to increase stress vulnerability and the risk for eating-related disturbances. A short (S) allele polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) is associated with a less efficient functioning brain serotonin system and therefore higher stress vulnerability. It has been suggested that this genotype may be directly linked to an increased risk for weight gain and/or obesity. However, a high amount of variability

Ruminative thinking in older inpatients with major depression.

Ruminative thinking, the tendency to dwell on particular ideas or themes, can be a prominent part of the phenomenology of major depression, but it rarely has been the focus of empirical research. We attempted to replicate (in adult psychiatric inpatients age > or = 50 years with DSM-III-R major depression) the previously published finding that ruminative thinking was associated with melancholia and with psychosis. In our sample, these associations were not present. In addition, we explored the relationships of ruminative thinking to specific areas of thought content (e.g., suicidal ideation, s

Cognitive manipulation of emotional and non-emotional information in working memory of patients with depression: a rigid processing style.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive psychology is one of the important perspectives to understand depression. Compared with previous studies, recent researchers increasingly focused on the exploration of the comprehensive cognitive process of patients with depression. The cognitive operation ability of working memory is an important comprehensive cognitive process, which reflects how individuals establish representations. This is the basis for the formation of experience and schema. The purpose of this study is to explore whether there are abnormalities in cognitive manipulation in patients with depressio

Associations of rumination and worry with pain and functional limitation in knee osteoarthritis: A cross-sectional study accounting for radiographic severity.

Pain and functional limitation in knee osteoarthritis are not always proportional to radiographic severity. This cross-sectional study examined whether worry and rumination were associated with pain and functional impairment after accounting for Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) severity. We included 156 consecutive patients with K-L grade 1 to 4 knee osteoarthritis recruited from an orthopedics outpatient clinic between February and April 2026. In bilateral cases, the predominantly symptomatic knee was used for K-L grading and scale-based symptom assessment. Pain intensity was assessed with the Visual

The role of shyness in cyberbullying perpetration: a moderated mediation model of relative deprivation, anger rumination, and Internet morality.

Although the relationship between shyness and aggression has been well established, whether shyness is associated with cyberbullying perpetration and its underlying mechanisms has been unclear. Guided by the General Aggression Model (GAM), this study proposed that shyness, as a personal trait, is related to cyberbullying perpetration through cognitive and emotional processes. Specifically, we developed a moderated mediation model to examine the mediating roles of relative deprivation and anger rumination, as well as the moderating role of Internet morality, in the relationship between shyness

Maternal depressive symptomatology and mother-infant bonding difficulties: the mediating role of brooding rumination.

BACKGROUND: While the association between maternal depressive symptomatology and mother-infant bonding (MIB) difficulties is well established, the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. This study innovatively investigates the mediating role of rumination (considering its two dimensions - brooding and reflection), a key cognitive process in depression that has been rarely explored in the postpartum period. AIMS: To compare rumination and MIB levels between mothers with and without depressive symptoms and assess whether maternal depressive symptomatology is associated with MIB
