Dispersal of the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) at an endemic focus of visceral leishmaniasis in Colombia.

Mark-release-recapture studies were carried out during 1990-1991 in El Callejón, Colombia, an endemic focus of American visceral leishmaniasis, to study the longevity, dispersal, and flight range of the principal vector, Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz & Neiva. Several groups of wild-caught (n = 1,539) and laboratory-reared F1 (n = 2,208) sand flies were marked with fluorescent dusts and released. Recaptures at daytime resting sites, on animal bait, and in CDC light traps were made for 20 d following each release. From 2 to 9% of L. longipalpis were recaptured, a rate which differed between the sex…

Host preferences of the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis at an endemic focus of American visceral leishmaniasis in Colombia.

Blood meals from 579 Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera:Psychodidae), collected in an endemic focus of American visceral leishmaniasis in Colombia, were identified by precipitin test. Sand fly collections were made during a 16-month period from the inside walls of two houses, a pigpen, and rock crevices in a small community (El Callejon) within the endemic area. Feeding patterns of the sand flies varied with locality and date of collection. Overall, bovine feedings predominated, but feedings were also recorded on pigs, equines, humans, dogs, opossums, birds, and reptiles. Calculation of the forage…

Study on the influence of key parameters of sand emission on dust flux based on multi-source data.

This study analyzes ground-based observations and multi-source remote sensing data from eight dust storm events in 2024 at two sites: the Tazhong (TZ) station in the Taklamakan Desert interior and the Xiaotang (XT) station on its northern margin, systematically investigates the interrelationships among dust particle size, friction velocity (U*), and dust flux, and evaluates the applicability of remote sensing data in dust monitoring. The results indicate that particle size significantly influences both horizontal fluxes (Q) and vertical dust fluxes (F). Fine particles (d[0.5]) enhance surface

Entomological survey of sand fly vectors and molecular screening for Leishmania parasite in refugee camps in Ethiopia.

Visceral leishmaniasis is transmitted by infected female sand flies. However, entomological data from refugee camps remained limited. This study aimed to describe sand fly fauna and assess natural Leishmania infection in selected refugee camps in Ethiopia. The study was conducted in four refugee camps. Sand flies were collected using a CDC light trap and sticky trap. Both male and female sand flies were dissected, and morphologically identified. The female sand flies were preserved in 95% ethyl alcohol for Leishmania DNA screening. A total of 2196 sand flies were collected. Phlebotomus rodhain…

Dogs as sentinel hosts for sand-fly-borne infections in the Mediterranean Basin: a multinational serological survey.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand-fly-borne infections are an emerging threat to human and animal health in Mediterranean countries, highlighting the need for improved surveillance and control strategies. Dogs are ideal sentinel hosts owing to their central role in the transmission of zoonotic Leishmania infantum, frequent exposure to sand fly bites, capacity to develop antibodies to phleboviruses, and close contact with humans. This study reports cross-sectional surveys of antibodies to Leishmania, Toscana virus (TOSV), and Sicilian sand fly virus (SFSV) in dogs from Portugal, Spain, Italy, Croat…

Land use and cover changes and sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae) assemblages in an emerging focus of leishmaniasis.

Land use and cover changes lead to fragmentation of the natural habitats of sand flies and modify the epidemiological profile of leishmaniasis. This process contributes to the infestation of adjacent rural settlements by vector sand fly species with different degrees of adaptation, promoting leishmaniasis outbreaks. This study aimed to assess land use and cover changes over a 12-year period and investigate the diversity and abundance of sand fly assemblages in the rural area of Codó, Maranhão State, Brazil. Temporal analysis of land use and cover changes was conducted using Sentinel-2 satellit…

Risk of sand and dust storms on cardiometabolic diseases: a cohort study of over 2.2 million participants.

Climate change has intensified the occurrence of sand and dust storms (SDS), contributing to an increasing public health burden. However, limited evidence exists on the long-term impact of SDS exposure on the incidence of cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs). In this study, we analyzed data from a population-based cohort of 2,260,855 individuals in Northwestern China (2019-2023). Individual-level SDS exposure over a three-year period was estimated using three machine learning models, with extreme gradient boosting demonstrating the best predictive performance. An Accelerated Failure Time (AFT) mode…

The Presence of Leishmania infantum DNA in Sand Flies Reflects Their Proximity to Human and Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne disease caused by Leishmania infantum infections in Brazil, and Lutzomyia longipalpis is its main vector. It is not well understood how L. infantum circulates between three hosts of public health importance: dogs, humans, and sand flies. The focus of this study was to determine the detection rate of L. infantum DNA in sand flies and evaluate the relative contribution of the three hosts as sand fly blood sources. Insects were collected using light traps in households with recent history of human VL, close neighbors of VL cases, and households with n…

Sand fly-borne diseases in Europe: epidemiological overview and potential triggers for their emergence and re-emergence.

Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Phlebotominae) are vectors of human and animal pathogens, including Leishmania species protozoan parasites and viruses of the genus Phlebovirus. In Europe, visceral zoonotic leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum, a deadly disease when left untreated, is endemic in southern countries, and dogs are the main reservoir hosts for human infection. Most phleboviruses cause asymptomatic infections or flu-like syndromes in humans, but Toscana phlebovirus can cause meningitis and encephalitis. These diseases are likely to re-emerge, posing a growing threat to publ…

Potential of biochar and humic substances for phytoremediation of trace metals in oil sands process affected water.

Oil sands process affected water (OSPW) is produced during bitumen extraction and typically contains high concentrations of trace metals. Constructed wetlands have emerged as a cost effective and green technology for the treatment of metals in wastewaters. Whether the addition of amendments to constructed wetlands can improve metal removal efficiency is unknown. We investigated the synergistic effects of carbon based amendments and wetland plant species in removal of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, nickel, and selenium from OSPW. Three native wetland species (Carex aquatilis, Juncu…

Hand explorations are determined by the characteristics of the perceptual space of real-world materials from silk to sand.

Perceiving mechanical properties of objects, i.e., how they react to physical forces, is a crucial ability in many aspects of life, from choosing an avocado to picking your clothes. There is, a wide variety of materials that differ substantially in their mechanical properties. For example, both, silk and sand deform and change shape in response to exploration forces, but each does so in very different ways. Studies show that the haptic perceptual space has multiple dimensions corresponding to the physical properties of textures, however in these experiments the range of materials or explorator…

Immunity to vector saliva is compromised by short sand fly seasons in endemic regions with temperate climates.

Individuals exposed to sand fly bites develop humoral and cellular immune responses to sand fly salivary proteins. Moreover, cellular immunity to saliva or distinct salivary proteins protects against leishmaniasis in various animal models. In Tbilisi, Georgia, an endemic area for visceral leishmaniasis (VL), sand flies are abundant for a short period of ≤3 months. Here, we demonstrate that humans and dogs residing in Tbilisi have little immunological memory to saliva of P. kandelakii, the principal vector of VL. Only 30% of humans and 50% of dogs displayed a weak antibody response to saliva af…

Comparison of dust release from epoxy and paint nanocomposites and conventional products during sanding and sawing.

The release of dust generated during sanding or sawing of nanocomposites was compared with conventional products without nanomaterials. Epoxy-based polymers with and without carbon nanotubes, and paints with different amounts of nano-sized titanium dioxide, were machined in a closed aerosol chamber. The temporal evolution of the aerosol concentration and size distribution were measured simultaneously. The morphology of collected dust by scanning electron microscopy was different depending on the type of nanocomposites: particles from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanocomposites had protrusions on th…

Impact of urbanization on the sand fly Phlebotomus langeroni nitzulescu in an old focus of visceral leishmaniasis in Egypt.

Changes in the environment often cause changes in disease transmission. Land use change especially urbanization can have a huge impact on transmission of vector-borne diseases. This study investigated the effect of urban development on the abundance of sand flies, in an old endemic focus of infantile visceral leishmaniasis in the north coast of Egypt. Sand fly abundance obtained in this study was compared to those obtained in 1984. In context remote sensing techniques are used to identify landscape features that might have influenced the spatial distribution of the sand fly vector in the area.…
