Managing mosquito spaces: Citizen self-governance of disease vectors in a desert landscape.

Public health agencies' strategies to control disease vectors have increasingly included "soft" mosquito management programs that depend on citizen education and changing homeowner behaviors. In an effort to understand public responses to such campaigns, this research assesses the case of Tucson, Arizona, where West Nile virus presents a serious health risk and where management efforts have focused on public responsibility for mosquito control. Using surveys, interviews, and focus groups, we conclude that citizens have internalized responsibilities for mosquito management but also expect publi

Use of a biodegradable self-expanding stent in the management of a benign oesophageal stricture in a cat.

An 11-year-old domestic shorthair cat presented with a six-week history of regurgitation following a dental procedure. Endoscopy identified a single oesophageal stricture in the cervical oesophagus. Stricture reformation occurred following endoscopic balloon catheter dilation on two occasions. Following a third balloon dilation a biodegradable polydioxanone self-expanding stent was placed across the stricture site. Following the implantation the cat was able to eat soft canned food orally without regurgitation. Fluoroscopic examination performed four months after placement indicated that the s

Role of self-expanding metallic stents in the management of malignant obstruction of the proximal colon.

PURPOSE: Expandable metal stents have been shown to be effective in the management of malignant large-bowel obstruction. However, right colonic lesions account for less than 5% of all reported cases of colonic stenting. This study was performed to determine the outcomes following stenting for lesions proximal to the splenic flexure. METHODS: The hospital records of patients undergoing stenting for large-bowel obstruction at a district general hospital in northeastern England from 2003 to 2008 were reviewed retrospectively. Data were analyzed to identify patient characteristics, site of obstru

Mediastinal migration of self-expanding bronchial stents in the management of malignant bronchoesophageal fistula.

Airway stents are commonly used to palliate malignant central airway obstruction and tracheo-/bronchoesophageal fistulas. Despite their efficacy in immediately relieving airway obstruction, they can be associated with a variety of complications. We report the case of a 44-year-old woman with a malignant bronchoesophageal fistula treated initially with a self-expanding silicone mesh stent in the left main bronchus followed 2 weeks later by an esophageal stent. Shortly afterward, she presented with chest pain, worsening cough, and breathlessness. A CT scan of the chest revealed the airway stent

Expandable self-locking nail in the management of closed diaphyseal fractures of femur and tibia.

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary fixation is the treatment of choice for closed diaphyseal fractures of femur and tibia. The axial and rotational stability of conventional interlocking nails depends primarily on locking screws. This method uses increased operating time and increased radiation exposure. An intramedullary implant that can minimize these disadvantages is obviously better. Expandable intramedullary nail does not rely on interlocking screws and achieves axial and rotational stability on hydraulic expansion of the nail. We analyzed 32 simple fractures of shaft of femur and tibia treated b

Olanzapine is effective in the management of some self-induced dermatoses: three case reports.

Self-inflicted dermatoses are often difficult to treat. We present three patients with excoriated acne, self-induced skin ulcers, and trichotillomania, respectively, whose symptoms responded favorably to a 2- to 4-week course of the atypical antipsychotic olanazpine at a dosage of 2.5 to 5.0 mg daily. In two of three patients, the efficacy of the olanzapine was most likely related to an attenuation of dissociative symptoms that were associated with the self-induced skin ulcers and trichotillomania.

Self-retaining ureteral stent catheters in the management of urologic complications of gynecologic malignancies.

Fifteen patients with ureteral obstruction secondary to advanced and/or recurrent gynecologic malignancies underwent endoscopic (3) or surgical transvesical (12) insertion of Gibbons (12) or Double "J" (3) stent catheters. Renal function improvement was noted in all but one patient who had renal parenchymal disease. No complication attributable to the insertion procedure was recorded. This approach to the treatment of ureteral occlusion in patients with gynecologic cancer is discussed and recommended.

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Self-Management Education Program for Adolescents with Headaches: A Pilot Study.

Headache disorders are one of the most frequent pediatric health complaints and are associated with impairments in daily functioning and increased rates of anxiety and depression. In adults with headache disorders, self-management education has successfully improved headache self-efficacy; however, no studies have evaluated this in a pediatric population. Hence, a pre-post comparison pilot study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of a 1-time, 90-minute, in-person, group workshop on headache self-management. Participant-reported headache self-efficacy an…

Women's experiences with the self-management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: a descriptive phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) is a significant contributing factor to maternal morbidity and mortality. Self-management plays a crucial role in women with HDP to delay disease progression and improve delivery outcomes. However, the lived experiences of self-management among women with HDP during pregnancy remain poorly understood. Therefore, the perspectives and experiences of managing HDP in women require special attention and exploration. METHODS: The qualitative study with a descriptive phenomenological design was conducted. Purposive sampling was used, and face-to-f…

A roadmap for developing a program to self-manage post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis risk.

Youth and young adults who experience a traumatic knee injury (i.e., ligament, meniscus, or cartilage injury; intra-articular fracture or dislocation) have a 6-fold elevated risk of early-onset post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis (PTOA), contributing to joint pain and disability for most of their adult lives. This reality represents a daunting personal and societal burden. Currently, there is no proven clinical program that supports individuals at-risk of PTOA self-manage their knee health and reduce their risk, despite evidence that interventions supporting exercise, physical activity, and hea
