[Trigeminal sensory neuropathy and lupus anticoagulant positive: cause or coincidence?].

INTRODUCTION: Trigeminal sensory neuropathy (TSN) is a rare entity characterised by transient sensory disorders in one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve (TN). There are (acute or chronic) idiopathic forms as well as others that are linked to inflammatory, vascular or structural lesions. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a female aged 30 who presented two self limited episodes of left facial hypaesthesia (second branch of the TN), with no other accompanying symptoms and which lasted 3 7 days, with complete resolution. In the study, lupus anticoagulant (LAC) positive was found in two

Prevalence of rectal hypersensitivity in patients with irritable bowel syndrome and its clinical subgroups.

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of rectal hypersensitivity in our irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients, the relationship of hypersensitivity to rectal distensibility and the differences in sensitivity among clinical subgroups of IBS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 18 healthy subjects and 56 IBS patients (Rome-II criteria; 22 diarrhea-predominant, 15 constipation-predominant and 19 alternating). Rectal sensitivity and distensibility were studied by isobaric phasic distension of a poliethilene bag with a barostat. RESULTS: IBS patients showed a lower threshold for discomfort, pain and maximum tolera

Does the vagus nerve mediate the sixth sense?

Can sensations originating from the internal environment modulate attitude and behaviour? Can the feedback about the operation of the viscera provide a calming and relaxing influence? Information from the chest and abdomen is delivered continuously by the vagus nerve, the largest visceral sensory nerve in the body. Because various 'stress-related' diseases can be associated with impaired functions in sensory vagal fibres, a better understanding of how sensory vagal information is processed in the CNS might offer new strategies for the treatment and/or prevention of several disorders, including

Phantom erection after amputation of penis. Case description and review of the relevant literature on phantoms.

BACKGROUND: Perception of a phantom limb is frequent after an amputation of an upper or lower extremity. Phantom penis is reported infrequently. METHOD: Case description and literature review. RESULT: The phenomenon of phantom penis followed total penectomy. Several aspects were unusual, particularly the existence with phantom only in the erect state, and associated recrudescence of a preoperative painful ulcer. General features of limb phantoms after amputation are reviewed including a résumé of recent studies of cortical reorganization. The phantom process is analyzed looking for clues to

[Ipsilateral central-type facial palsy and contralateral hemiparesis associated with unilateral medial medullary infarction: a case report].

Clinical pictures of medial medullary syndrome are variable, depending upon the extent of the lesion. Facial palsy has rarely been observed even in medullary infarction. However, central-type facial palsy is usually found contralaterally to the infarct area at the level of the rostral medulla. In the present report, we discuss the pathogenesis of the neurological manifestations in a 57-year-old man with hypertension. The patient presented with mild left facial palsy of central type, right hemiparesis, paresthesia, with deep sensory disturbance of the right extremities. An MRI of the brain show

Pure cheiro-oral syndrome due to a small pontine hematoma: report of a case and review of the literature.

Cheiro-oral syndrome is frequently associated with other neurologic deficits; its pure form is rare. We report a 60-year-old man with pure cheiro-oral syndrome due to a small hematoma located in the ventral tegmentum of the right upper pons. His sensory disturbance remained unchanged during a follow-up period of 16 months. Review of the literature suggests that the pons is the most frequent site of lesions in pure cheiro-oral syndrome.

Vestibular compensation.

Regulation of the human equilibrium differs from the other, mostly linear, human senses. It consists of a multitude of receptors and an interrelated network that is necessary for data processing as well as for regulatory processes. Thus, the human equilibrium system represents a mixture of hardware and related software interactions. The input is also named the "equilibrium tetrade" (1-3), and comprises vision, vestibular inertia acceleration perception, proprioception and hearing. In the case of various types of lesion, one has to deal with a variety of morphological as well as mostly function

Postural instability on one foot in patients with loss of unilateral peripheral vestibular function.

The vestibular system is a major contributor to postural control and the vestibular nuclei are closely connected to the limb spinal motor neurons. Acute loss of unilateral peripheral vestibular function results in, among others, postural instability which improves with time due to central compensatory processes. It has been shown, however, that a number of processes, such as sensorimotor restriction, drugs, and so forth, may affect the speed and the quality of compensation. Due to the difference of ipsilateral vs contralateral connectivity between the vestibular nuclei and the limb spinal moto

Inferior alveolar nerve repositioning.

Nerve repositioning is a viable alternative for patients with an atrophic edentulous posterior mandible. Patients, however, should be informed of the potential risks of neurosensory disturbance. Documentation of the patient's baseline neurosensory function should be performed with a two-point discrimination test or directional brush stroke test preoperatively and postoperatively. Recovery of nerve function should be expected in 3 to 6 months. The potential for mandibular fracture when combining nerve repositioning with implant placement also should be discussed with the patient. This can be av

Association of sensory and motor impairments with dementia: a cross-sectional analysis in US older adults.

BACKGROUND: Impairments in sensory and motor function are common in older adults and have been linked with higher prevalence of dementia. However, their independent associations with dementia have not been examined in a nationally representative population. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS; Round 11/2021) of U.S. Medicare beneficiaries. Dementia was classified per NHATS protocol as none, possible, or probable dementia. Vision measures included presenting binocular distance visual acuity, near visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity. Cognitive behavioural therapy versus other interventions on mental health in people with sensory impairments: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sensory impairments can negatively affect people's quality of life and daily functioning, including anxiety and depression symptoms. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) could be an effective intervention to alleviate these, however its effectiveness compared to other interventions have not been examined. The aim of this review was to examine the effectiveness of CBT versus other interventions on anxiety and depression symptoms in people with hearing, visual, and other sensory impairments. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) was

Behavioral phenotype of RSH/Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome.

Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS, RSH/SLO syndrome, MIM 270400) is an autosomal recessive multiple malformation/mental retardation syndrome initially described by Smith et al. [1964] that is due to a defect in cholesterol biosynthesis. The behavioral phenotype of Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome demonstrates cognitive abilities from borderline intellectual functioning to profound mental retardation, sensory hyperreactivity, irritability, language impairment, sleep cycle disturbance, self-injurious behavior, and autism spectrum behaviors. In a recent study of 28 subjects, 14 subjects (50%) with SLOS

The Diagnostic Value of Whole-Exome Sequencing in a Spectrum of Rare Neurological Disorders Associated with Cerebellar Atrophy.

Several neurological disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, and neurodegenerative disorders have a genetic element with various clinical presentations ranging from mild to severe presentation. Neurological disorders are rare multifactorial disorders characterized by dysfunction and degeneration of synapses, neurons, and glial cells which are essential for movement, coordination, muscle strength, sensation, and cognition. The cerebellum might be involved at any time, either during development and maturation or later in life. Herein, we describe a spectrum of NDDs and NDs in seven patients fro
