Long-term performance and health cows experimentally exposed to polybrominated biphenyls.

Fifteen Holstein cows were studied for up to 15 00 days to determine whether exposure to polybrominated biphenyls produced latent or subtle toxicosis not evident in previous acute or short studies. Animals for these long studies came from three groups given 0, .25, or 250 mg of fireMaster BP-6 per day for 60 days in 1975. Another group that received 250 mg of BP-6 for 180 or 202 days in 1976 also was studied. Individual animals were in their second, third, or fourth lactations. Milk production was not different among experimental groups, and mature body weights were similar. Increases in the a

Context-dependent sublethal hazard of glyphosate to non-target predators revealed by functional response analysis.

Glyphosate, one of the most widely used herbicides globally, is a significant environmental contaminant that may affect non-target organisms crucial to ecosystem services, including biological pest control. While glyphosate targets the shikimate pathway in plants, which is absent in animals, there is increasing evidence that glyphosate induces sublethal effects on arthropod predators. However, the factors modulating these effects remain unclear. Here, we investigated how physiological context, specifically pre-treatment with the broad-spectrum antibiotic tetracycline, commonly used to experime

A Descriptive Study of the Attitudes, Characteristics and Behaviours Differentiating Men Who Do and Do Not Want Help for Their Sexual Interest in Children.

In the field of child sexual abuse prevention, secondary prevention services seek to engage with people concerned about their sexual interest and behaviours towards children prior to the onset of offending. There is a lack of robust information to inform program development and to seek to engage earlier with people concerned about their risk to children. Accordingly, this paper reports on the findings of a survey of 4,918 men, drawn from representative samples in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The paper described the proportion of men in the survey with a sexual interest

Artistic Value as a New Paradigm to Promote Ocean Conservation.

This position paper explores the artistic value that can be attributed to the ocean through works of art. The starting point is the economic argument used in ocean conservation, which is based on the concept of ecosystem services (ES), primarily considered as goods and services the ocean provides to society. Through an interdisciplinary approach, we briefly discuss the successes and limitations of this concept and the potential role of artistic value in relation to it. We then examine three case studies of contemporary artworks produced between 2015 and 2021, closely tied to marine natural sci

The diversity, drivers, consequences and management of plant invasions in the mangrove ecosystems.

Mangrove ecosystems, which occupy intertidal environments across tropical and subtropical regions, provide crucial ecosystem services, such as protecting the coastal areas by reducing the impact of cyclones, storms, and tidal waves. Anthropogenic activities such as human settlements, deforestation, pollution, and climate change have increased the risk of biological invasions in mangrove habitats. Plant species can be introduced to mangrove habitats via anthropogenic means, such as trade and transportation, urbanisation, and agriculture, as well as through natural processes like wind, floods, c

Bioinspired Design for Space Robots: Enhancing Exploration Capability and Intelligence.

Space exploration is a major global focus, advancing knowledge and exploiting new resources beyond Earth. Bioinspired design-drawing principles from nature-offers systematic pathways to increase the capability and intelligence of space robots. Prior reviews have emphasized on-orbit manipulators or lunar rovers, while a comprehensive treatment across application domains has been limited. This review synthesizes bioinspired capability and intelligence for space exploration under varied environmental constraints. We highlight four domains: adhesion and grasping for on-orbit servicing; terrain-ada

A Re-evaluation of the Optimal Liver Copper Concentrations for Health, Performance and Fertility of Replacement Holstein-Friesian Heifers.

Excessive copper (Cu) supplementation is common on dairy farms worldwide, despite a growing body of research highlighting the risks of over-supplementation, including liver damage, impaired growth, and reduced fertility. However, diagnosing Cu toxicity remains challenging due to the liver's allostatic regulation of blood Cu levels and debate surrounding toxicity thresholds. This study utilised secondary data from a longitudinal study conducted between September 2016 and September 2018 involving 80 replacement Holstein-Friesian heifers. Data was utilised to generate receiver operating character

The response of aquatic ecosystems to the interactive effects of stratospheric ozone depletion, UV radiation, and climate change.

Variations in stratospheric ozone and changes in the aquatic environment by climate change and human activity are modifying the exposure of aquatic ecosystems to UV radiation. These shifts in exposure have consequences for the distributions of species, biogeochemical cycles, and services provided by aquatic ecosystems. This Quadrennial Assessment presents the latest knowledge on the multi-faceted interactions between the effects of UV irradiation and climate change, and other anthropogenic activities, and how these conditions are changing aquatic ecosystems. Climate change results in variation

Qualitative Research to Design Sustainable Community-Based Surveillance for Rabies in Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Given the proximity and recent spread of rabies in Indonesia, effective rabies surveillance in dogs is a priority in Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG). Reporting of potential cases requires community engagement; therefore, the value and acceptability of such a system is critical to ensure sustainable surveillance. We used qualitative research methods to identify factors that influence the acceptability and value of community-based rabies surveillance. Thirty-two semi-structured interviews were conducted with informants in 16 communities in East Arnhem, the Northern Peninsula Area,

Less common parasitic infections in Southeast Asia that can produce outbreaks.

The culturally deeply rooted habit of eating raw or undercooked foodstuffs, coupled with inadequate hygiene practices and lack of separation between foodstuff and wildlife in parts of Southeast Asia have repeatedly led to outbreaks due to rare parasitic infections. Trichinellosis, capillariasis and angiostrongyliasis are the three prime examples of such outbreaks occurring in Southeast Asia. We review the current knowledge of trichinellosis, capillariasis and angiostrongyliasis. Whilst infections-caused by nematodes-are rarely reported, their public health importance is considerable. Control of the African trypanosomiases with special reference to land use.

There is a need to reassess the role of the trypanosomiases, both human and animal, in African ecology and economy. Withdrawal of control services from the Congo basin was followed by a resurgence of infection from ancient foci, many of them thought to have been extinguished. Successful elimination of Glossina in savanna habitats has sometimes been followed by reinvasion causing massive epizootics. Elsewhere continued recession of the tsetse fly has been followed by cattle population growth which is periodically interrupted by catastrophic pasture famines.Efficiency of control rather than larg
