A common polymorphism near PER1 and the timing of human behavioral rhythms.

OBJECTIVE: Circadian rhythms influence the timing of behavior, neurological diseases, and even death. Rare mutations in homologs of evolutionarily conserved clock genes are found in select pedigrees with extreme sleep timing, and there is suggestive evidence that certain common polymorphisms may be associated with self-reported day/night preference. However, no common polymorphism has been associated with the timing of directly observed human behavioral rhythms or other physiological markers of circadian timing at the population level. METHODS: We performed a candidate gene association study

Ethical oversight of AI-driven paediatric trials: a proactive, risk-sensitive interim review model.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven paediatric trials pose novel challenges for institutional review boards (IRBs), as traditional annual continuing review frameworks are often inadequate for evolving algorithmic and data-related risks. International and national regulations provide only limited guidance on how to design proactive, risk-sensitive interim oversight mechanisms for such research. OBJECTIVE: To develop and illustrate a risk-sensitive interim review model that strengthens participant protection and procedural fairness in AI-enabled paediatric research. METHODS: A conc

Activities and participation after primary total hip arthroplasty; posterolateral versus direct anterior approach in 860 patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In the past decade, a shift occurred in surgical total hip arthroplasty (THA) approaches to the posterolateral (PLA) and direct anterior approach (DAA). Comparisons of postoperative activities and participation between surgical approaches for THA are sparse. We therefore investigated the association between PLA and DAA for THA regarding the construct "activity and participation" (ICF model) during the first postoperative year. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was an observational cohort study on osteoarthritis patients scheduled for primary THA in 2 hospitals. Questionnaires

Corneal foreign bodies--first aid, treatment, and outcomes. Skills review for an occupational health setting.

Eye injuries from foreign body incidents remain prevalent in the workplace setting. Often the professional nurse provides the first line of treatment. The informal class presented at the authors' facility offered a comprehensive, organized presentation of a common injury encountered in the practice of occupational health nursing. Strenghts of the presentation included handouts demonstrating eye eversion technique and a flip chart summarizing the content to be placed in each medical station as quick reference. One challenge involved presenting the information to all nurses. The site encompasses

Controversies in chicken-pox immunization.

Chicken-pox is one more newer vaccine in our armamentarium against infectious diseases. Due to its extremely contagious nature, varicella is experienced by almost every child or young adult in the world. Each year from 1990 to 1994, prior to availability of varicella vaccine, about 4 million cases of varicella occurred in the United States. Of these cases approximately 10,000 required hospitalization and 100 died. Although varicella is not commonly perceived as an important public health problem, the socioeconomic consequences in industrialized countries of a disease that affects practically e

Sex Differences in Low-dose Ethanol Effects on Motivated Behavior and Limbic Corticostriatal Activity.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, the World Health Organization declared that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption. It is becoming increasingly clear that even at lower doses, ethanol exposure impacts both the brain and behavior. Emerging work has shown that chronic exposure to lower doses of ethanol may lead to inflexible behaviors and promote aberrant reward seeking. This study aimed to determine the impact of chronic, low-dose ethanol exposure on neural substrates of reward and associated alterations in behavioral strategy in response to change in reward value. METHODS: Female and male C57BL/

Impacts of heat on sleep quality among heat-exposed workers: a systematic review.

Climate change is intensifying occupational heat exposure, posing risks not only for heat-related illness but also for sleep, which is essential for recovery, safety, and productivity. Heat-exposed workers are highly vulnerable due to prolonged exposure, limited access to cooling, and poor housing. This systematic review aimed to synthesise global evidence on how occupational heat exposure affects sleep quality among workers across different occupations and settings. A systematic review was conducted following Synthesis without Meta-Analysis (SWiM) guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, and Google Schola

Meal Timing Jetlag is associated with anxiety, depressive and insomnia symptoms in a French-speaking online cohort: A cross-sectional analysis of ALIMENTAL 2.

BACKGROUND: Chrono-nutrition - when, not only what, one eats relative to circadian timing - is an emerging determinant of mental health. We tested whether Meal Timing Jetlag (MTJL), the workday-to-free-day discordance in eating schedules, is associated with anxiety (primary outcome) and with depressive and insomnia symptoms (secondary), independently of sleep-based circadian misalignment. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of the ALIMENTAL 2 French-speaking online cohort (n = 2945). Sleep timing was assessed with the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire and meal timing with a Food Timing Screener.

Factors associated with vitamin D deficiency in health care workers exposed to SARS-CoV-2: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, up to 76.6% of the population may be affected by vitamin D (VD) deficiency, which has been linked to increased morbidity and mortality from COVID-19. This underscores the importance of further research into VD supplementation, particularly for health care workers, who are at higher risk due to indoor work environments and dietary challenges associated with shift schedules. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify factors associated with VD deficiency in Mexican health care workers exposed to SARS-CoV-2. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study from J

Rapid Review of the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC) Shows It Can Detect Behavioural Changes in Social Communication in Autism.

Reliable measurement of social communication change remains a major challenge in autism research. The Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC) was developed to detect subtle changes in communication. This rapid review synthesised current evidence on the BOSCC's responsiveness, validity, and suitability as a clinical trial endpoint. Systematic searches of PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Web of Science identified 19 eligible studies (n = 789). Within-group meta-analyses estimated pre-post standardised mean change (Hedges' g) for BOSCC and ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedul

Do nurses exercise power in rehabilitation wards?

AIM: Nowadays, there is a change in nursing policy. The nurse-centred model is shifting to the patient-centred model. Decision-making is therefore transferred to the customer (Power to the Patient). Data from literature mainly deals with acute care and long-term care facilities. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether: i) a nurse-centred model is still effective in rehabilitation wards; ii) patients' dignity is nevertheless considered; iii) nurses experience role satisfaction in a rehabilitation setting. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was applied. Forty-eight nurses of our rehabilitat

Mechanical countermeasures for spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome during 30-days of head down tilt bed rest: design, implementation, and tolerability.

After longer duration space missions, some astronauts experience structural and functional changes in the eye and structural changes in the brain, termed Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS). Countermeasures against SANS are required to minimize potential operation impacts and negative long-term health consequences. Headward fluid shifts, which appear to promote SANS, provide a target for countermeasures. The SANS countermeasures study, a 30 days strict head down tilt bed rest (HDTBR) study, tested two mechanical countermeasures aimed at reversing cephalad fluid overload. This w

Social jetlag and obstructive sleep apnea severity: A retrospective study based on polysomnography.

BACKGROUND: Social jetlag, representing the misalignment between endogenous circadian rhythms and socially imposed sleep schedules, has been associated with various adverse health outcomes. However, its potential relationship with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity, as quantified by the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), remains unclear. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed data from participants with OSA (AHI ≥5 events/hour) who completed sleep questionnaires and underwent polysomnography at our sleep center. Exclusions included non-OSA, prior OSA treatment, shift work, sleep-affecting me
