PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the long-term outcomes of the novel "three horseshoe-like incision" (3-HSI) technique for holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) compared to the traditional three-lobe HoLEP method in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
METHODS: A comparative study was conducted of 54 patients undergoing the 3-HSI technique and 27 patients treated with the three-lobe technique from November 2016 to June 2018. All surgeries were performed by a single experienced surgeon. Data were collected preoperatively, perioperatively, and during follow-up. Statistic

BACKGROUND: Compared with traditional running shoes, Advanced Footwear Technology (AFT) improves the oxygen cost of running (O2 cost) for athletes competing at fast speeds. Less clear are the effects of these modern shoes at the slower speeds commonly adopted by recreational runners. Therefore, this study's primary aim was to assess the effects of AFT shoes on O2 cost at slow running speeds.
METHODS: Fourteen moderately-trained runners (6 men, 8 women, age 25.5 ± 2.8 years, body mass index 21.7 ± 2.3 kg m-2, V̇O2peak 49.8 ± 5.1 ml O2 kg-1 min-1) ran at four speeds (7.5, 9.0, 10.5 and 12.0 km …

A 28-year-old man developed urticaria while he was working in the garage. We suspected contact urticaria, which can be caused by some products used in his field, and we carried out a prick test using his work gloves and shoes. His gloves were orange and black in colour, his shoes were black and white in colour, and the materials they were made of were unknown. The results of the prick test using the gloves and shoes were positive. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was applied, and a fluorescent dye was found to be present in his gloves and shoes. The results of a prick test using the fluore…

BACKGROUND: People with plantar flexor weakness generate less ankle push-off work during walking, resulting in inefficient proximal joint compensations. To increase push-off work, spring-like ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) can be provided. However, whether and in which patients AFOs increase push-off work and reduce compensatory hip and knee work is unknown.
METHODS: In 18 people with bilateral plantar flexor weakness, we performed a 3D gait analysis at comfortable walking speed with shoes-only and with AFOs of which the stiffness was optimized. To account for walking speed differences between co…

An estimated 78% of women regularly walk in high heels. However, up to 58% complain about low back pain, which is commonly thought to be caused by increased lumbar lordosis. However, the extent to which a subject's posture is modified by high-heeled shoes during dynamic activities remains unknown. Therefore, we sought to evaluate whether low- or high-heeled shoes influence the kinematics of the pelvis and the spine during walking. Twenty-three inexperienced women, and seventeen women experienced in wearing high-heeled shoes, all aged 20-55 years, were measured barefoot and while wearing low- (…

All Americans, and most likely all individuals in all societies, have mismated feet; that is, the two feet of probably no individual are exactly alike in size, shape, or proportions. This conclusion was based on the findings of a demographic foot-measurement survey embracing 6800 adults (4000 females, 2800 males), conducted in 1981-1982 by the Prescription Footwear Association. The findings may explain why the ideal or expectation of "perfect" shoe fit is virtually impossible, although they do not suggest that adequate or satisfactory shoe fit is not attainable in most instances involving so-c

The inventive physician may find ways of making releasing cuts or openings with existing shoes to alleviate points of pressure. Many patients will suffer misery of pressure in shoes without giving a thought to cutting them, or opening them to allow for more freedom of movement. Releasing cuts may be made along seams, or between sole and upper with leather inserts to increase shoe size at points of major need for improved fit. Soft shoes may be resorted to. Elasticized material or sandals are preferable to the hard, resistant leather which aggravates so many lesions in our offices. Shoes custom…

To date, there is no empirical evidence suggesting greater jump heights or cushioned landings when using figure skating (FS) blades of different mass and design. This study examined the effect of lightweight (Gold Seal Revolution from John Wilson) and traditional (Apex Supreme from Jackson Ultima and Volant from Riedell) blades, a new prototype blade with an integrated damping system (damping blade) in two different damping configurations, and running shoes (Runfalcon from Adidas) on kinetics and kinematics during simulated on-ice landings from 0.6 m and maximal countermovement jumps on synthe…

BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain requiring medical attention. The clear understanding of the long-term impact routine footwear has on plantar fasciitis is essential as any slight changes in shoe selection could possibly prevent the wearer from substantial discomfort and disability. Thus this study was planned to investigate impact of routine footwear on foot health by highlighting different features of the shoes worn daily by the people having plantar fasciitis.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the orthopedics' outpatient department of a ter…

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of musculoskeletal pain and disability globally, and abnormal knee loading is central to disease pathogenesis. Clinical guidelines recommend clinicians provide advice regarding appropriate footwear for people with knee OA, yet there is little research comparing the effects of different footwear on knee OA symptoms. Research suggests that wearing flat flexible shoes is associated with lower knee joint loads compared to stable supportive shoe styles. This two-arm pragmatic, comparative effectiveness randomised controlled trial will compare …

This case study reports the kinematic effect of 2 different cricket shoes on a fast bowler who reports a history of posterior ankle joint impingement. The participant bowled 6 trials in 2 pairs of cricket shoes. The 3-dimensional kinematics of the joints of the front leg was quantified during stance phase of the delivery stride. Wearing the high-cut shoe resulted in the ankle being 7.7-degree angle more plantarflexed at initial contact compared with the low-cut shoe. Again, when wearing the high-cut shoe compared with the low-cut shoe, the ankle joint was 15.5-degree angle more adducted and th…

BACKGROUND: Properly fitted shoes can support the development of growing feet and prevent problems and pathologies, not only in childhood, but also in adulthood. This points to the need to conduct research on the impact of shoe fitting on the structure of the foot in order to raise awareness and importance of this problem, to enable proper decisions regarding the purchase and use of shoes. The aim of this study was to analyze indoor footwear fit and its impact on foot structure in 7-year-old schoolchildren.
METHODS: The CQ-ST podoscope and the Clevermess device were used for measurements. The…

Rocker bottom shoes are commonly recommended for patients who have undergone ankle arthrodesis. Limited data are available to support this recommendation. In the present case-control study, 2 groups of participants were identified for the investigation: a study group (SG) of 9 patients who had previously undergone ankle arthrodesis and a normal group (NG) of 9 healthy volunteers. Gait data were collected using a video recorder while the participants walked barefoot and wearing rocker bottom shoes. These data were analyzed using computer-based gait analysis software. The total motion was calcul…

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a standard flexible shoe and a stability running shoe on lower limb muscle activity … associated with the shoe upper bracing the foot, the shape of the shoe outer-sole and weight of the shoes. Further research is needed to investigate differences between these shoe styles when participants walk for longer distances (i.e. over 1000 m) and following fatigue.

INTRODUCTION: Carbon plates have been used to increase running shoes' longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS), but their effect during a long duration run remains unknown. Our study aimed to identify the effect of LBS on energy cost of running (Cr), biomechanics, and fatigue during a half-marathon.
METHODS: Thirteen well-trained male runners (half-marathon time <1 h 40) performed two half-marathons at 95% of the running speed associated with their second ventilatory threshold on two separate visits, with either high-LBS (HLBS) shoes, with carbon plates) or standard-LBS (SLBS) shoes. Before and a…
