Alactic anaerobic performance in subjects with sickle cell trait and hemoglobin AA.

The aim of the present study was to assess the performance of subjects with sickle cell trait (SCT) during brief and explosive exercise involving mainly anaerobic metabolism. One hundred and ninety-six black subjects underwent SCT screening, which revealed the presence of 16 subjects with SCT and 180 subjects with normal hemoglobin (HbAA). All subjects performed four tests: 1) a 100-m sprint, 2) a long-jump, 3) a Leger-Boucher shuttle test and 4) a jump-and-reach test. A control group (n = 18) selected from the 180 subjects with HbAA was matched according to the sex, age, weight and height of …

Death due to microvascular occlusion in sickle-cell trait following physical exertion.

The heterozygous condition characterized by the presence of hemoglobin AS (sickle-cell trait) occurs in approximately 8% of the American black population. Unlike the homozygous state (sickle-cell disease), sickle-cell trait is not widely recognized as a cause of life-threatening illness or death despite over 30 case reports describing fatal or serious complications of exercise in young black males with this condition. These reports identify heat stress, dehydration, viral illness, and poor physical conditioning as factors which may contribute to exertional rhabdomyolysis and sudden death, sugg

Percentage of HbS among cases of sickle-cell trait in Basra, Iraq.

The proportion of sickle haemoglobin (HbS) was determined in 170 sickle-cell-trait individuals; 75 (44.1%) individuals had HbS% > 38%, 54 (31.8%) had HbS% between 31% and 38% and 41 (24.1%) had HbS% < 31%. There was positive correlation between HbS% and haemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume and target cell percentage. Multiple regression analysis indicated that measurement of haemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and target cell percentage could be used to predict the HbS%.

Renal medullary carcinoma: an aggressive neoplasm in patients with sickle cell trait.

Renal medullary carcinoma is a recently described tumor that occurs exclusively in patients with sickle cell trait. Although extremely rare, the distinctive demographic, clinical, and radiologic findings should suggest the diagnosis of this aggressive neoplasm.

Sickle cell trait & disease among tribal communities in Orissa, Madhya Pradesh & Kerala.

A study of 2570 tribals comprising 973 from Kerala, 696 from Madhya Pradesh and 901 from Orissa revealed the frequency of sickle cell gene to vary from 0.05 to 0.31 among different communities. High frequency of the gene (0.145 or more) was observed among Chettys, Kurmars and Kondhs, who also had a substantial number of homozygous sicklers. None of those with sickle cell disease (HbSS) were more than 39 yr in age as compared with 9.9-35.3 per cent among heterozygotes (HbAS). Mean foetal haemoglobin in those with sickle cell disease varied between 9.7 to 13.5 per cent, although ti showed a slig

Anaerobic exercise components during the force-velocity test in sickle cell trait.

Incremental exercise tests have shown no difference in exercise capacity (EC), maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), and ventilatory threshold (VT) in subjects with sickle cell trait (SCT) when compared to controls with normal hemoglobin (Hb). Nevertheless, during long and strenuous exercise testing, subjects with SCT exhibit comparable EC but lower oxygen uptake (VO2). Consequently, specific metabolic adaptations in subjects with SCT have been suggested during endurance exercise, consisting of a slight "handicap" in oxygen consumption and compensation by the hypothetical development of a higher ana…

The prevalence of sickle cell trait in Sierra Leone. A laboratory profile.

Three thousand five hundred and twenty four (1527 male and 1997 female) samples were screened for the presence of the abnormal haemoglobin--Sickle Cell (HbS) between 1990-1993. 780 (22%) of these show sickle erythrocytes in a reduced oxygen environment. Electrophoretic differentiation of 344 samples positive from the metabisulphite screening test, revealed that 76 are of the homozygous form with 3 being HbSC. Noting the adverse consequences on the health status of those affected and the expense involved in the management of such patients, there is an urgent need for intervention.

[Cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass in a patient with sickle-cell trait].

The sickle-cell gene is most concentrated in West Central Africa, the northeast corner of Saudi Arabia and East Central India. Sickle cell trait is the heterozygous condition for Hb S gene. Thirty to fifty per cent of their hemoglobin is Hb S and the remainder is Hb A. The sickle-cell crisis is induced by hypoxia, hypercarbia, acidosis, low flow condition, and hypothermia, which leads to vasoocclusion. A 39-year-old black man from Burkina Faso located in West Africa with left ventricular rupture was admitted for operation using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). He had been diagnosed as sickle-cell…

ECG in sickle cell trait at rest and during exercise and hypoxia.

The electrocardiograms of 28 volunteers with sickle cell trait were compared to those of 28 control subjects. Tracings were recorded at rest, at peak exercise, at simulated sea level, and at a simulated altitude of 4,000 m. No differences between the subjects with sickle cell trait and control subjects were observed for the majority of electrocardiographic measurements. Several measurements had statistically significant differences that persisted after correcting for body surface area and physical fitness. The magnitude of the differences does not appear to have physiologic or clinical signifi…

Prevalence of the sickle cell trait in an athletic West African population.

The prevalence of the sickle cell trait in a school for elite young athletes in Cameroon, West Africa, was examined in order to evaluate whether the choice of an athletic career was influenced by its presence. The presence of hemoglobin AS was found in 27 of the 145 students attending the school (18.6%). Since the frequency of the sickle cell trait in the general Cameroonian population is 17.3%, we conclude that its presence is not a determinant factor involved in the choice of a professional sportive activity.

Effect of moderate inspiratory hypoxia on exercise performance in sickle cell trait.

In previous work (Weisman IM, Zeballos RJ, Johnson BD: Cardiopulmonary and gas exchange responses to acute strenuous exercise at 1,270 meters in sickle cell trait. Am J Med 1988; 84: 377-383), no significant differences in cardiopulmonary and gas exchange responses to acute, strenuous exercise were observed between volunteers with sickle cell trait (SCT) and control subjects at an altitude of 1,270 meters. The current study was designed to evaluate the effect of a greater hypoxic stimulus on the response of healthy, black male basic recruits, 11 with SCT (HbAS) and 11 control subjects, to acut…

[One hundred and twenty-three cases of sickle-cell trait (author's transl)].

One hundred and twenty-three cases of sickle-cell trait (122 negro immigrants) are studied in a department of internal medicine. The frequencies of G6PD deficiency, anemia, splenomegaly and tuberculosis are neighbouring at the negro without hemoglobinopathy. The relationship between the sickle-cell trait and the reason of admission of the final diagnosis il likely in 2,4 % of the cases, doubtfully in 15,4 %, null in the other cases. The occasional (hemolytic, thrombotic, painful, visceral, osseous) manifestations of the sickle-cell trait (apart from the constant hyposthenuria) and their mechan

Dupuytren's disease and the sickle-cell trait in a female black patient.

Dupuytren's contracture is not often seen in the black-skinned patient. The combination of a Dupuytren's contracture in a black female patient who also carried the sickle-cell trait is described. This association of two diseases in a dark skinned patient has important surgical and anaesthetic implications which must not be forgotten in those countries with a large number of immigrants from the "sickle-cell" areas of the world.

Growth, behaviour, and educational achievement of Jamaican children with sickle-cell trait.

A longitudinal study of the mental and physical development of 200 children with normal haemoglobin and 21 with the sickle-cell trait was carried out in a small rural community in Jamaica. At about 2 and 10 years of age heights and weights showed no significant differences. At about 10 years of age classroom behaviour, sociability, and educational achievement were similar. The results suggest that the sickle-cell trait does not affect growth and mental development.
