Podophyllotoxin derivative VP 16-213.

VP 16-213, a derivative of podophyllotoxin, is currently entering phase-III studies. Its mode of action is incompletely understood, but differs markedly from that of its parent compound. The greatest lethal damage is experienced by cells in the late S and G2 phases. In the L 1210 system the drug shows marked schedule dependency: prolonged administration may be more effective than single bolus administration. As a single agent, VP 16-213 is the most active compound yet tested against small-cell bronchial carcinoma. It may also prove to be a useful agent in patients with other types of lung tumo

Parenting profiles and dimensions in relation to children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors in the ECHO program.

Parenting behaviors play a critical role in children's socioemotional development and risk for psychopathology. Prior research has relied on both variable- and person-centered approaches to examine links between parenting and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors, yet few studies have integrated these approaches within a single investigation. In the current study, we combined both approaches by first utilizing latent profile analyses to identify profiles of parenting practices across multiple dimensions. We then utilized path analyses to examine whether parenting profiles (perso

Acceptability, engagement and exploratory outcomes and costs of a co-designed intervention to support children of parents with a mental illness: Mixed-methods evaluation and descriptive analysis.

Children whose parents have a mental illness are much more likely to experience mental health problems and other adverse long-term impacts. Child-centred psychosocial interventions can be effective, but not much is known about how to design and implement them in different settings. A pre-post, mixed methods, single-arm evaluation of a co-designed social support intervention with parents and children (4-18 years) measured parents' mental health (PHQ-9), perceived social support (ENRICHD), parental self-efficacy (PSAM) and children's mental health (SDQ), quality of life (Kidscreen-27), and child

Combinations of Parent-Related Risk Factors Explaining Family Violence Toward Children and Spouse.

The purpose of the study was to investigate parent-related risk factor combinations that explain family violence (FV), which refers to intimate partner violence and child maltreatment (CM). The data were collected from parents with a 4-year-old child using a nationwide retrospective cross-sectional survey conducted in Finland (FinChildren) (N = 10,737). The research questions were as follows: (a) How are parent-related risk factors associated with FV against children and the spouse? (b) How does the accumulation of parent-related risk factors within three risk factor clusters explain FV? Analy

Parental language and dosing errors after discharge from the pediatric emergency department.

OBJECTIVES: Safe and effective care after discharge requires parental education in the pediatric emergency department (ED). Parent-provider communication may be more difficult with parents who have limited health literacy or English-language fluency. This study examined the relationship between language and discharge comprehension regarding medication dosing. METHODS: We completed a prospective observational study of the ED discharge process using a convenience sample of English- and Spanish-speaking parents of children 2 to 24 months presenting to a single tertiary care pediatric ED with fev

[Children of single mothers: health risks and environmental stress].

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In Germany the risk for relative poverty has increased profoundly during the last 15 years, especially among single parent families. As poverty is often associated with bad health we examined the physical and mental health as well as health-related behaviour, housing and environmental conditions in children with lone mothers versus children in couple families. STUDY POPULATION AND METHODS: In 3 cross-sectional surveys conducted during 2004-2007 in 3 cities and 3 rural areas in Bavaria data on 19 039 pre-school children (47% female) were collected. Health, behaviour and exp…

Clinical effectiveness and parental acceptance of silver diamine fluoride in preschool children: a non-randomized trial.

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) presents a promising approach in pediatric dentistry, simplifying procedures by eliminating the need for sharp instruments or anesthesia. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of 38% SDF application in arresting active caries lesions in preschool children and to assess parental acceptance of the treatment. This non-randomized, prospective, single-arm clinical study included 48 children, presenting with a total of 158 active caries lesions. The lesions were treated with 38% SDF, and their characteristics, including changes in dentin color and lesion textur

The Legal Limits of Parental Autonomy: Do Parents Have the Right to Refuse Intramuscular Vitamin K for Their Newborn?

Description The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all newborns receive an intra-muscular (IM) dose of vitamin K within 6 hours of delivery for the prevention of vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB). There has been an increase in the number of parents who have refused the IM vitamin K dose for their infant based on its possible link to leukemia, preservatives that may lead to adverse reactions, and wanting to avoid pain for the infant. When newborns do not receive IM vitamin K, the most serious feared potential complication is intracranial hemorrhage with potential neurologic seque

Parental reports of stress and anxiety in their migrant children in China: The mediating role of parental psychological aggression and corporal punishment.

BACKGROUND: Both ecological system theory and developmental contextualism framework have pointed out that family is one of the most direct microsystem environmental factors affecting children adjustment, especially for migrant children. As two major family microsystem factors, parenting stress and harsh discipline may be closely related to migrant children's anxiety. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the predictive effects of both mothers' and fathers' parenting stress on Chinese migrant children's anxiety one year later in the single model and the mediating role of mothers' and fathers' harsh d

The psychosocial impact on single mothers' well-being - A literature review.

In India, single-parent families are proliferating. In particular, women are taking the lead in assuming the role. They are the most vulnerable of all the disadvantaged groups. Due to an absence of financial and social support, single mothers endure a great deal of emotional strain. So, the aim of the study is to investigate the various psychosocial factors that influence the well-being of single mothers. Additionally, this research seeks to assess the coping strategies employed by single mothers. This article reviews 80 studies on psychosocial concerns faced by single mothers, focusing on men

Genetic control of resistance to Coccidioides immitis: a single gene that is expressed in spleen cells determines resistance.

We have previously reported that inbred mice vary widely in their resistance to Coccidioides immitis peritonitis. To investigate the number of genes controlling resistance, (susceptible X resistant)F1 X susceptible backcross mice were tested for resistance to infection. A 1:1 ratio of resistant:susceptible offspring was observed, which is consistent with a single dominant gene determining resistance. To find out whether this gene, which we designated Cms, is expressed in the immune and/or the inflammatory responses, radiation chimeras were constructed by transplanting spleen cells from the res

Parental state dynamically reshapes auditory processing of offspring vocalizations in zebra finches.

Parental care is critical for offspring survival. For many species, including humans, auditory cues unique to dependent offspring, such as baby cries, elicit the necessary behavior from parents to care for young. Despite this, we know little about how the brain encodes auditory cues specific to offspring. Zebra finches are an excellent model to study this. Zebra finches are biparental, meaning both male and female parents raise the young and rely on auditory cues (begging calls) to elicit chick feeding responses (parental behavior). Begging calls also become individually identifiable by the pa

Shifting sands: How parents engage with the idea of their child's death.

OBJECTIVES.: While parental prognostic awareness is a vital concept, its complexity can sometimes be underestimated. Our study aimed to understand how parents of children with serious illness engage with the idea of their child's death from a lived experience perspective. METHODS.: Bereaved parents of children known to a statewide pediatric palliative care service, who died at the age of 16 years or younger from any medical condition, participated in semi-structured interviews. Reflexive thematic analysis was employed, informed by a phenomenological framework. RESULTS.: Twenty bereaved paren

Behavioral Versus Nonbehavioral Guided Self-Help for Parents of Children With Externalizing Disorders in a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Self-help interventions for parents, which have a behavioral basis, are considered to be an effective treatment option for children with externalizing disorders. Nonbehavioral approaches are widely used but have little empirical evidence. The main objective of this trial was to compare the efficacy of a behavioral and a nonbehavioral guided self-help program for parents. Families of children (aged 4-11 years) diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) were randomized to either a behavioral or a nonbehavioral guided self-help program in
