A comparison of the effects of one-, one and a half-, and two-hour turning intervals on changes in the skin surface temperature, interface pressure, and color was conducted on 16 older, healthy adults. Both trochanters and the sacrum were the sites used for measurement. Findings indicated that the greatest increase in skin surface temperature occurred at the end of the two-hour turning interval and in the trochanteric positions. No significant differences in interface pressure were found with respect to the length of the turning interval or body position. A descriptive summary of changes in sk

Monitoring foot skin temperatures at home have been shown to be effective at preventing the occurrence of diabetic foot ulcers. In this study, the construct validity of using >2.2°C difference between contralateral areas on the foot as a warning sign of imminent ulceration is explored. Thirty participants with diabetes at high risk of ulceration (loss of protective sensation and previous ulceration and/or amputation) monitored their foot temperatures at six sites, four times a day for six days using a handheld infrared thermometer. Walking activity, time of day, and environmental temperature w…

BACKGROUND: All current methods of core temperature monitoring have limitations. There is at least one skin temperature probe that can be modified to a nasal temperature probe (NP). This study was conducted to validate this modified skin temperature probe as an accurate surrogate measure of core temperature by comparing the temperature measurements obtained from NP to those from the esophageal stethoscope (ES).
METHODS: In 45 adult patients undergoing general anesthesia, one pair of simultaneous temperature measurements were obtained from the ES (E (temp)) and the NP (N (temp)).
RESULTS: The…

BACKGROUND: Perioperative hypothermia remains a common and preventable complication. Forced-air warming systems are widely used, but comparative data on their effectiveness are limited. This study aimed to evaluate heat flux, mean skin temperature, and thermal comfort across five full-body forced-air warming blower and cover combinations.
METHODS: In a randomized crossover trial conducted in a controlled clinical setting, 20 healthy volunteers were each warmed for 30 min using five different forced-air warming systems in randomized order. A 45-min washout period separated each warming session…

OBJECTIVES: Maintenance of appropriate body temperature, humidification and prevention of skin injury are very important in the management of extremely premature infants with immature skin. We have developed a new closed liquid incubator, utilising the characteristics of perfluorochemical (PFC) liquids, i.e., high specific gravity and chemical and biological inertness. The potential of this incubator to control body temperature was evaluated in rats.
METHODS: PFC liquid (FC43; 3M Company, Tokyo, Japan) within the incubator was heated or cooled and the rectal temperature of each rat and the PF

The skin's physiological response to repetitive stress is not well understood in prosthesis users. Improving this understanding could facilitate the design of a diagnostic tool to determine if the skin is adapting to tolerate stress from a prosthetic socket. The objective of this research was to develop a physical system that mechanically stresses the skin in a controlled manner and then implements the imaging modalities of infrared (IR) imaging and optical coherence tomography (OCT). IR imaging characterizes the skin's temperature response, while OCT characterizes vessel diameter changes over

The temperature of the human body is not constant during the day, and is related to a double modulation of both homeostatic and circadian processes. The circadian rhythm of body core temperature (CRT) is known to depend on the central mechanism involved in thermoregulatory variations. The role of sweating in the nocturnal fall of body core temperature (BcT) is not clear. We evaluated the CRT in a 45-year-old female with a lack of sweating since birth because of congenital generalized anhidrosis. She referred episodes of heat intolerance when ambient temperature was around 35 degrees C. Skin bi

Sleep, circadian rhythms, light exposure, and environmental factors are increasingly recognized as important regulators of skin physiology. The skin contains peripheral clocks and exhibits circadian rhythmicity in barrier function, immune activity, pigmentation, temperature, blood flow, and repair processes. This review aims to summarize the current evidence linking sleep disturbances, circadian regulation, light exposure, seasonal variation, environmental temperature, and circadian desynchronization with skin physiology and some dermatoses. Sleep loss and disturbances in sleep duration may al

After craniofacial trauma, symptoms like swelling and pain occur. Cooling reduces these symptoms but the optimal cooling temperature for a maximum benefit without adverse effects is unclear. 30 participants were cooled at 10 °C, 15 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C and 30 °C for 30 min. Before cooling and at 15, 30, 45 and 60 min after cooling, the skin blood flow, oxygen saturation (SO) and haemoglobin concentration (Hb) were measured by laser Doppler spectrophotometry at 2 mm and 8 mm depth. The skin temperature was measured, and the participant's satisfaction was marked on a visual analogue scale. There wer…

The purpose of this study was to evaluate physiological and subjective responses while wearing the Shikoro-type helmet for firefighters when compared to typical helmets. Eight firefighters conducted a 30-min exercise at a 5 km h-1 in three helmet conditions at an air temperature of 32 °C with 70%RH. The results showed that no significant differences in rectal, mean skin temperature and physiological strain index among the three conditions were found during exercise and recovery. Skin temperatures on the cheek, ear and neck during exercise were significantly lower for the Shikoro-type condition…

Electrophysiological studies of hypothalamic thermosensitive neurons have been conducted for the past 25 years. These studies have greatly improved our understanding of the neural control of thermoregulation. They have added a sense of reality to black-box models, and they have fostered the development of neuronal models having a major effect on the predictions and conclusions made in thermoregulatory studies. Neuron studies not only provide an understanding of the synaptic and cellular basis of thermosensitivity, but they also permit morphological identifications of neurons and their pathways

UNLABELLED: Gorjanc, Jurij, Shawnda A. Morrison, Rok Blagus, and Igor B. Mekjavic. Cold susceptibility of digit stumps resulting from amputation after freezing cold injury in elite alpinists. High Alt Med Biol. 19:185-192, 2018.
AIM: The aim of the study was to assess whether previous freezing cold injury in fingers and/or toes might predispose alpinists to greater risk of further freezing cold injury, primarily due to a greater vasoconstrictor response to cold, resulting in a lower perfusion, reflected in lower skin temperature.
METHODS: Ten elite alpinists (N = 10; 8 male and 2 female) wit…

Therapeutic hypothermia may be useful in various circumstances including stroke. However, core body temperature is normally tightly regulated. Even mild hypothermia in conscious subjects thus provokes vigorous thermoregulatory defenses which are potentially harmful in fragile patients. Furthermore, thermoregulatory responses are effective, which reduces the rate at which hypothermia can be induced. Drugs are thus often given to blunt normal thermoregulatory defenses. General anesthetics profoundly impair thermoregulatory control, but prolonged general anesthesia is rarely practical or appropri

BACKGROUND: Burn wound progression is a significant problem as burns initially thought to be superficial can actually become full thickness over time. Cooling is an efficient method to reduce burn wound conversion. However, if the cooling agent is below room temperature, depending on the wound size the patient is at risk of hypothermia. Additionally, tissue perfusion is reduced leading to an aggravation of burn wound progression. We investigated if wound dressings based on non-pre-cooled bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) with a high water content cool a burn just by evaporation and reduce the intr

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormones are essential for the full thermogenic response of brown adipose tissue (BAT) and have been implicated in dermal temperature regulation. Nevertheless, persistent cold-intolerance exists among a substantial proportion of hypothyroid patients on adequate levothyroxine (LT4) substitution.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To assess if skin temperature and activation of BAT during treatment with liothyronine (LT3) differs from that of LT4 treatment, fifty-nine female hypothyroid patients with residual symptoms on LT4 or LT4/LT3 combination therapy were randomly assigned in a non…
