Self-assembly of protein fibrils into suprafibrillar aggregates: bridging the nano- and mesoscale.

We report on in vitro self-assembly of nanometer-sized α-synuclein amyloid fibrils into well-defined micrometer-sized suprafibrillar aggregates with sheet-like or cylindrical morphology depending on the ionic strength of the solution. The cylindrical suprafibrillar structures are heavily hydrated, suggesting swollen gel-like particles. In contrast to higher order structures formed by other negatively charged biopolymers, multivalent ions are not required for the suprafibrillar aggregates to form. Their formation is induced by both mono- and divalent counterions. The self-assembly process is no

A Carboxymethyl Cellulose Hydrogel Switch Enabling pH-Responsive Fertilizer.

The Green Revolution boosted crop yields with synthetic fertilizers, but their high solubility causes environmental pollution and poor synchronization with crop nutrient demands. To address this problem, we developed green intelligent fertilizers (GIF) using a pH-responsive material to enable root-fertilizer feedback. An ultra-sensitive and biodegradable pH-responsive material (pH-B) was synthesized by coordinating carboxymethyl cellulose with Ca2+ and cross-linking, with H+ sensitivity at 10-4 mol L-1. We then constructed a smart release system by embedding this pH-B switch into a 5% polyuret

β-Hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase functionalized two-dimensional photonic crystals for quantitative and visual sensing of ketone bodies.

β-Hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is a substantial physiological ketone body. Its elevated concentration causes ketoacidosis, which is a disorder with a high mortality rate. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a simple method for the in-situ monitoring of BHB in urine. In this study, a photonic crystal hydrogel (PCH) sensing material for the detection of urinary ketones was prepared by embedding a two-dimensional polystyrene photonic crystal array (PCA) in a hydrogel functionalized with β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BHBDH). BHBDH catalyzes the interconversion between β-hydroxybutyrate and a

Ankle sprain bracing solutions and future design consideration for civilian and military use.

INTRODUCTION: Ankle sprains are common injuries within the civilian and military populations, with lingering symptoms that include pain, swelling, giving-way, and a high likelihood for recurrence. Numerous bracing systems are available to stabilize the ankle joint following sprains, with new design iterations frequently entering the market. Currently available braces generally include sleeve, lace-up, and stirrup designs. Sleeves provide mild compression and warmth but limited stability for the ankle, while lace-ups and stirrups appear to be more effective at preventing and treating lateral an

Islet cell spheroids produced by a thermally sensitive scaffold: a new diabetes treatment.

The primary issues in treating type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) through the transplantation of healthy islets or islet β-cells are graft rejection and a lack of available donors. Currently, the majority of approaches use cell encapsulation technology and transplant replacement cells that can release insulin to address transplant rejection and donor shortages. However, existing encapsulation materials merely serve as carriers for islet cell growth. A new treatment approach for T1DM could be developed by creating a smart responsive material that encourages the formation of islet cell spheroids to
