Myofibroblasts have ultrastructural and functional characteristics intermediate between fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. Previous studies indicated that most myofibroblasts express actin and vimentin but not desmin immunophenotypes. Two benign intramuscular myofibroblastic tumors which displayed a desmin-positive and actin-negative immunophenotype are reported. The tumors occurred on the back of a 45 year old man who had neurofibromatosis 1 and the thigh of a 37 year old man without neurofibromatosis. Primary ureteral tumors occur relatively infrequently compared to tumors of the kidney and bladder. Smooth muscle tumors of the ureter are very rare and only 9 cases of leiomyosarcoma have been reported in the literature. The treatment of choice is total nephroureterectomy with en bloc excision of the tumor. Prognosis is unfavorable as indicated by the short survival of the reported cases.

Penile myointimoma is a rare, benign tumor occurring within the corpus spongiosum vasculature of the glans penis. Thus far, there have been twenty-three reported tumors in the literature. We present four additional tumors of this unique myointimal proliferation. Patients ranged in age from 20 to 68 years and presented with a firm mass on the glans penis. Epididymal leiomyosarcomas are rare malignant tumors of smooth muscle origin. We present a case of a low-grade tumor with negative margins managed with a high-radical inguinal orchiectomy. Our review of the literature suggests that low-grade and localized tumors with negative margins can be managed with simple epididymectomy and imaging surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare soft tissue tumor involving the kidneys, liver and other visceral organs. It is composed of smooth muscle cells, adipocytes and small- to medium-sized hyalinized vessels. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristic clinicopathologic manifestations of AML in different tissues.
