Inadequacy of present polyspecific anti snakevenom - a study from central Kerala.

OBJECTIVES: To study the cause for prolonged coagulation profile and death in properly treated hemotoxic snake envenomation and the bad prognostic indicators in snake envenomation. METHODS: This was a hospital based prospective analytical study. All snake bites with envenomation from 2006 through 2009 were clinically analysed at the time of admission. They were treated with standard treatment protocol. Snakes brought were preserved, identified and correlated with clinical details. RESULTS: Of the 73 envenomation patients registered, 66 (90.4%) were hemotoxic envenomation, in which 14 (19.2%)…

Acute pulmonary edema as a complication of anti-snake venom therapy.

Polyvalent Anti-snake Venom (ASV) is a life-saving antivenin for severe envenomation due to snake bite in India. ASV infusion is occasionally associated with severe allergic reactions, i.e. anaphylaxis and death. We report a rare instance of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema due to ASV infusion in an eleven years old boy.

Arthropod Envenomation in North America.

Arthropods (phylum Arthopoda) account for a higher percentage of morbidity and mortality to humans than do mammalian bites, snake bites, or marine envenomation. They are ubiquitous in domestic dwellings, caves, and campsites and in wilderness settings such as deserts, forests, and lakes. Although arthropods are most intrusive during warmer months, many are active throughout the winter, particularly indoors. Arthropods are also nocturnal and often bite unsuspecting victims while they are sleeping. Encounters with humans are generally defensive, accidental, or reactive. An individual stung by an…

First insights into the biochemical and toxicological characterization of venom from the Banded Cat-eyed Snake Leptodeira annulata pulchriceps.

With the aim to widen the current knowledge of toxinological implications of bites from rear-fanged snakes and biological roles of their venoms, this study focuses on the biochemical composition and toxic effects of the venom of Leptodeira annulata pulchriceps from Argentina. We analyzed the protein composition by electrophoresis and mass spectrometry, and enzymatic properties by quantitative assays on different substrates. Additionally, we evaluated local and systemic toxicity in mice, and tested its cross-reactivity with elapid and viperid antivenoms used in Argentina. This venom showed feat

Wound care of spider and snake envenomations.

Venomous bites and stings are numerous but severe local tissue damage is uncommon. Venoms may be simple substances or complex mixtures of many poorly characterized components whose interactions are still not fully understood. The best studied example of a dermonecrotic venom is that produced by the brown recluse spider (Loxosceles reclusa). Rattlesnake envenomation also causes significant wound injuries. Many spider and snake envenomation management modalities are controversial and the evidence is mounting against the use of a number of these treatments.

The Amazonian Tropical Bites Research Initiative, a hope for resolving zoonotic neglected tropical diseases in the One Health era.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) disproportionately affect populations living in resource-limited settings. In the Amazon basin, substantial numbers of NTDs are zoonotic, transmitted by vertebrate (dogs, bats, snakes) and invertebrate species (sand flies and triatomine insects). However, no dedicated consortia exist to find commonalities in the risk factors for or mitigations against bite-associated NTDs such as rabies, snake envenoming, Chagas disease and leishmaniasis in the region. The rapid expansion of COVID-19 has further reduced resources for NTDs, exacerbated health inequ

Neurotoxicity, haemostatic disturbances and haemolytic anaemia after a bite by a Tunisian saw-scaled or carpet viper (Echis 'pyramidum'-complex): failure of antivenom treatment.

A young man in Germany was bitten by a large captive saw-scaled viper (Echis 'pyramidum'-complex) of Tunisian origin. During the first few hours after the bite he developed evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation and fibrinolysis, and bled spontaneously. Despite being given a total of 310 ml of three different Echis-specific antivenoms (together with large amounts of fresh frozen plasma and concentrated clotting factors), venom antigenaemia (measured by enzyme immunoassay) and coagulopathy persisted for more than 10 days, and he developed a haemolytic anaemia and mild renal dysfunct

A Community Engagement Approach to Snakebite Prevention in Rural Uganda: Exploring Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices.

Snakebite envenoming is classified as a Neglected Tropical Disease and causes mortality, morbidity, and economic impacts for hundreds of thousands of people per year, particularly in tropical, low- and middle-income countries. Most research on snakebite interventions focuses on improving clinical management rather than bite prevention. However, prevention may provide a better mechanism to minimise snakebite impacts, particularly in rural areas where access to effective medical treatment is limited. This study reports on the preliminary testing phase of a participatory workshop intervention run

Occupational injuries with captive lance-headed vipers (Bothrops moojeni): experience from a snake farm in Brazil.

We studied occupational injuries with captive lance-headed vipers (Bothrops moojeni) that occurred in a snake farm in south-eastern Brazil from February 1981 to May 1999. The risk of injury, taking into account 13 cases of snake-associated injuries (12 of them snake bites) was 2.73 per 10,000 person-days of work, and 3.51 per 100,000 venom extractions. Thirteen cases of injury occurred in seven workers, whereas 18 workers were never injured, suggesting that some individuals have a higher risk of injury than others perhaps due to lack of concentration or overconfidence. Eight episodes of occupa…

Differential action of medically important Indian BIG FOUR snake venoms on rodent blood coagulation.

Snakebite is a global health problem affecting millions of people. According to WHO, India has the highest mortality and/or morbidity due to snakebite. In spite of commendable research on Indian BIG FOUR venomous species; Naja naja and Bungarus caeruleus (elapid); Daboia russelii and Echis carinatus (viperid), no significant progress has been achieved in terms of diagnosis and management of biting species with appropriate anti-snake venom. Major hurdle is identification of offending species. Present study aims at differentiation of Indian BIG FOUR snake venoms based on their distinguish action

Bilateral Pulmonary Embolism Following a Viper Envenomation in France: A Case Report and Review.

Complications following snake bites are not common in France. We report the case of a bilateral pulmonary embolism following a viper envenomation in France.A healthy 72-year-old female presented with a lower limb hematoma following a viper bite. She was admitted at the hospital 2 days later and received low-molecular-weight heparin because of bed rest. Seven days later, she complained of thoracic pain and respiratory failure, and a bilateral pulmonary was diagnosed, without biological sign of neither disseminated intravascular coagulation nor coagulation trouble. Repeated lower limbs Doppler u…

A retrospective analysis of epidemiology, clinical features of envenomation, and in-patient management of snakebites in a model secondary hospital of Assam, North-east India.

Assam, a Northeastern State of India, is inhabited by several venomous snake species causing substantial morbidity and mortality. The data on the epidemiology of snakebites and their management is underreported in this region. Hence, a secondary health-based retrospective study was carried out at Demow Model Hospital, Sivasagar, Assam, to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological profile of snakebite cases reported in this rural hospital and their management. Snakebites occurring between April 2018 to August 2022 were reviewed based on socio-demographic details of the patient, clinical symptom

Snakebite envenoming in the Caribbean: Report of a regional workshop.

Snakebite envenoming is a public health hazard in some of the Caribbean islands and in the regions of Mexico and Central and South America facing the Caribbean. An international collaborative network was established in the last decade, involving diverse stakeholders in the Caribbean region, with the aim of developing research projects on venoms, envenoming, and antivenoms, improving the clinical management of envenoming, and strengthening public health interventions. Regional workshops have been organized since 2017 in French Guiana, Martinique and Saint Lucia. As a follow up of these developm

Inflammation induced by snake venoms optimizes envenomation.

Snake envenomation activates the immune system through permeability-increasing factors that generate an acute vascular inflammatory response by opening large inflammation-activated pores (IAPs) in the microvasculature. These events facilitate the exudation of plasma from blood into body tissues. However we show that IAPs also allow macromolecules, including venom toxins, to flood directly into the bloodstream, even against an outflow of plasma solutes. Such inflammation-facilitated macromolecular absorption (IFMA) acts together with lymphatic absorption and has a physiological role in removing

The pharmacological role of nucleotidases in snake venoms.

Several hydrolytic enzymes of snake venom have evolved to interfere in various physiological processes, which are well defined. However, hydrolytic enzymes such as nucleotidases (5'nucleotidase, ATPase, and ADPase) are less studied and their pharmacological role in venoms is not clearly defined. Very few studies have shown the pharmacological importance of these endogenous purine release related enzymes in venoms. The near-ubiquitous distribution of these enzymes in venoms, suggests a significant role for these enzymes in envenomation. It is suggested that their major function is in the genera
