Ethical issues in donation-based prosocial interventions for health: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Donation-based prosocial interventions for health, such as monetary donations for diagnostic tests, aim to encourage voluntary actions that benefit others while fostering public participation to promote health. These interventions are increasingly used in public health, but the associated ethical issues have not been comprehensively described. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using the Arksey and O'Malley framework to synthesize bioethics and public health literature on the ethical issues encountered with donation-based prosocial interventions for health. We searched PubMed,

"I'm Present but Absent": A Phenomenological Study of Children Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence in Arab Society in Israel.

Children exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) experience significant psychological consequences; however, the current literature is largely grounded in Western, individualist trauma frameworks. These perspectives often overlook how children interpret and negotiate violence in collectivist cultural contexts shaped by loyalty, honor, and silence. In Arab society in Israel, such cultural dynamics may profoundly shape children's lived experiences; however, their subjective perspectives remain insufficiently explored. This study explored the lived experiences of children exposed to IPV in Ara

Oxytocin-enhanced group therapy for methamphetamine use disorder: Randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (METH) use is a public health crisis that disproportionately affects men who have sex with men (MSM). There are currently no FDA-approved pharmacological interventions to treat methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). MUD is associated with social impairments and extremely high treatment attrition rates. Administration of oxytocin, a neuropeptide involved in social attachment, may be a novel approach to addressing these issues. Moreover, oxytocin administration has shown promise for reducing METH-related addictive behavior in animal models, but has not yet been investiga

Oxytocin-enhanced motivational interviewing group therapy for methamphetamine use disorder in men who have sex with men: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) in the United States has risen dramatically in the past four decades and is concentrated in populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM). Despite the public health consequences of MUD, there are no FDA-approved psychopharmacological treatments. Psychosocial treatment alone has been shown to reduce methamphetamine use, but high attrition rates limit treatment efficacy. Promising findings from animal models of MUD using exogenous oxytocin, a social neuropeptide, have set the stage for translational work. Along with unique an

Body proportions for the facilitation of walking, running and flying: the case of partridges.

BACKGROUND: Predation is one of the most important natural selection forces. Prey species can optimize feeding behavior and escape from predators based on mobility conditioned by body proportions. With age, mobility capacity increases and individuals are more efficient in finding resources and safety (e.g., food and refuge). Birds' mobility is driven by the dimensions, of the head and torso, as well as the extremities and flight feathers. To assess the relationship between body traits and to understand how body proportions are organized in wild Red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa), we used b

Officer friendly and the tough cop:gays and lesbians navigate homophobia and policing.

Despite attempts to expand social diversity, policing is still dominated by a white, masculine, heterosexual ethos. As a consequence, employment of lesbians and gay men as police officers may be especially threatening to members of this occupation. Within the context of potential hostility and homophobia, nontraditional officers must negotiate their contradictory presence on the police force. This paper investigates that negotiation. Using the Bem Sex Role Inventory and open-ended survey data from a sample of "out" and "closeted" gay and lesbian police officers, we ask how gays and lesbians ma

Gambling behaviors in Israeli adults: findings from a nationally representative sample.

Globally, 46.2% of all adults report having gambled in the previous 12 months. While most experience no negative repercussions from gambling, individuals who are highly engaged in gambling are at greater risk of problem gambling (PG). Studies point to the psycho-social, environmental, and socio-demographic risk factors associated with gambling and PG, and the associated harm to individuals, families, and society, making it a public health concern worldwide. Israel has a relatively regulated conservative gambling market where casinos and electronic gambling machines are banned, and online gambl

Historical Redlining, Social Determinants of Health, and Stroke Prevalence in Communities in New York City.

IMPORTANCE: Historical redlining was a discriminatory housing policy that placed financial services beyond the reach of residents in inner-city communities. The extent of the impact of this discriminatory policy on contemporary health outcomes remains to be elucidated. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations among historical redlining, social determinants of health (SDOH), and contemporary community-level stroke prevalence in New York City. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: An ecological, retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted using New York City data from January 1, 2014, to De

Death Anxiety and Trauma in Forcibly Displaced Children in the Gaza Strip: A Critical Review of Emerging Research, 2024-2025.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review synthesizes recent empirical and theoretical studies from 2024 to 2025 that examine the psychological effects of war, displacement, and siege on Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip. It focuses on the interconnected issues of death anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), grief, and resilience, aiming to frame mental health outcomes within structural and political contexts rather than within individual pathology. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies indicate that between 70 and 90% of children in the Gaza Strip meet criteria for PTSD or exhibit significant symptoms

Community Disorganization, Anxiety, and Binge Drinking Among U.S. Young Adults.

Introduction: Anxiety and binge drinking are prevalent among young adults. Anxiety has been shown to increase the risk of binge drinking, and community-level stressors such as crime and lack of cohesion may further influence this association. Living in a community with increased stressors, such as high crime, may exacerbate the association between anxiety and binge drinking. However, few studies have examined these associations among young adults. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if community disorganization moderates the association between anxiety and binge drinking amon

Textual analysis in suicidal crisis management. Clinical case report and proposal of an intervention methodology.

Socioeconomic crises can deeply affect personal narratives and community dynamics, sometimes leading to acute mental health emergencies such as suicidal crises. These situations require structured interventions. Textual analysis, by addressing interactive and narrative dimensions, offers a valuable framework for crisis management and health promotion. This case report describes an individual whose economic and employment instability escalated into an acute suicidal emergency, marked by high and imminent risk, loss of agency, dependence on others, and intensifying suicidal ideation. The interve

Three evolutionary functions of human music: predator defense, obtaining food, preparation for war.

Social nature of music is gradually becoming a strong scholarly consensus. In this line of thought, I want to continue discussion of the evolutionary mechanisms of several concrete functions of the human musicality. In my theoretical work on the origins and evolution of music, I have argued that music's primary evolutionary functions were deeply connected to survival. Among the most important of these functions were (1) predator defense, (2) obtaining food, and (3) preparation for war. The discussion of these three functions of music is at the centre of this article. I propose that early forms

Infertility currently affects nearly one in six couples, representing more than 3.3 million people in France. Infertility now occurs in an unprecedented demographic context, marked by a rapid decline in fertility: the total fertility rate has fallen from 1.87 children per woman in 2019 to 1.56 in 2025, while the annual number of births has reached its lowest level since the post–Second World War period, resulting in a natural population decrease. This trend gives infertility major strategic significance for public health and social cohesion. Far from being a purely individua

Do all roads lead to Rome? A qualitative process evaluation of two types of group-based Behavioural Activation following acquired brain injury from the MAPLES feasibility trial.

Approximately 1 in 3 acquired brain injury (ABI) survivors have post-ABI depression. Behavioural Activation (BA), an intervention that encourages engagement in positively reinforcing activities, shows promise. We conducted a process evaluation of two group-based BA interventions in ABI. Adults (≥18 years) recruited from ABI services, charities, and self-referral were randomized to receive either "Traditional" BA (scheduling positive activities combined with cognitive management strategies) or "Experiential" BA (completing positive activities within-session only), delivered once weekly over eig

The true story of the "strong and gentle" Acciano's Giant.

This is the story of a giant who lived in Abruzzo 200 years ago. He became a symbol for his people and a strong resilience generator. Gigantism, in the history of humanity has always attracted attention, albeit passing over the centuries from myth, from divinity to the freak phenomenon, the freak of nature that becomes a spectacle to show off. The attraction for understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying gigantism developed by the end of 19th century. Increased levels of growth hormone (GH) or insulin-like growth hormone 1 (IGF1) causes overgrowth in pituitary gigantism. The im

The many functions of vocal learning.

The capacity to learn novel vocalizations has evolved convergently in a wide range of species. Courtship songs of male birds or whales are often treated as prototypical examples, implying a sexually selected context for the evolution of this ability. However, functions of learned vocalizations in different species are far more diverse than courtship, spanning a range of socio-positive contexts from individual identification, social cohesion, or advertising pair bonds, as well as agonistic contexts such as territorial defence, deceptive alarm calling or luring prey. Here, we survey the diverse

Perinatal fetal loss grief counselling experience for expectant fathers: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Expectant fathers may experience negative emotions such as grief and distress following perinatal fetal death, potentially sustaining psychological trauma of varying severity. In severe cases, this may adversely affect family harmony, marital intimacy, and social cohesion. Consequently, understanding fathers' experiences within such circumstances is of paramount importance. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the experience of grief counselling for expectant fathers following perinatal fetal loss. METHODS: Sixteen expectant fathers who experienced perinatal fetal loss were recruited

The Adaptive Significance of Tail-Flagging: A Test in European Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Mammals are typically characterised by dull brown or grey colouration for camouflage, yet a number of species exhibit striking white underparts, including the underside of the tail, which can be facultatively displayed when the tail is raised. Nonetheless, the adaptive significance of raising a white tail by mammals is poorly understood. To investigate this, we observed 2169 escape events from wild European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), using human approaches, taxidermy predator models (fox, marten) and live buzzard attacks and tested seven hypotheses, including alarm signalling, quality ad
