BACKGROUND: Individuals with rare diseases may face challenges that are different from those experienced in more common medical conditions. A wide range of different rare conditions has resulted in a myriad of studies investigating the specificities of the diagnosis in focus. The shared psychological experiences of individuals with a rare condition, however, have not been reviewed systematically.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review, including qualitative studies on adults, published between 2000 and 2016. Papers including more than one rare genetic or nongenetic diagnosis were included.

BACKGROUND: Social learning is the process of acquiring social skills, new information, or associating negative or positive valence to a context through the observation of others and through direct social interaction with others. Neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder show deficits in social salience and reciprocal affective responses. Social learning implicates the basolateral amygdala (BLA), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and anterior insula (AI). The lateral habenula (LHb), a brain area renowned for its role in negative reinforcement learning, has not been yet exten

Tensions between therapeutic and security needs on forensic wards can create a social climate which is challenging for both mental health nurses and patients. Social climate refers to the physical, social and emotional conditions of a forensic ward which influence how these environments are experienced. For patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), previous trauma means that the social climate of forensic settings may be experienced as retraumatising, negatively impacting the outcomes and wellbeing of both patients and mental health nurses. Trauma-informed care (TIC) has been offere

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by specific social symptoms, restricted interests, stereotyped repetitive behaviors, and delayed language development. The 3q29 microdeletion (3q29del), a recurrent copy number variant, confers a high risk for ASD and schizophrenia, and serves as an important pathological model for investigating the molecular pathogenesis of a large number of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions. Recently, mouse models carrying a deletion of the chromosomal region corresponding to the human 3q29 region (Df/+ mice) were gene

This laboratory study examined the emotional reactivity of persons with heightened borderline personality (BP) features to a social rejection stressor. Participants with high levels of BP features (n = 43) and controls with low levels of BP features (n = 67) were randomly assigned to a condition involving negative evaluation and social rejection based on personal characteristics, or to a condition involving a frustrating arithmetic task and negative evaluation based on performance. Hypotheses were that the high-BP individuals would demonstrate greater increases in negative emotions, shame, and

Loneliness is a distressing feeling that accompanies the perception that one's social needs are not being met by the quantity or the quality of one's social relationships. It is a subjective experience of a perceived discrepancy between the preferred and actual level and quality of social interaction.1 In contrast, social isolation is an objective lack of meaningful and sustained social contacts, interactions, networks or belonging. Social isolation describes a paucity of social relationships, while loneliness depicts the lived experience and recognition of that absence.2 Although sometimes us

The rhetoric of the social model of disability is presented, and its basic claims are critiqued. Proponents of the social model use the distinction between impairment and disability to reduce disabilities to a single social dimension-social oppression. They downplay the role of biological and mental conditions in the lives of disabled people. Consequences of denying biological and mental realities involving disabilities are discussed. People will benefit most by recognizing both the biological and the social dimensions of disabilities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Negative expectations (NEs) are fundamental to various mental disorders. Finding ways to modulate NEs would help to improve clinical treatment. The present study investigated how previously formed expectations of social rejection are revised in the context of novel positive social experiences, and whether their revision can be modulated by differentially shifting participants' attentional focus.
METHODS: Our sample of 124 healthy participants was randomly assigned to four experimental conditions and received manipulated social feedback in multiple alleged webcam con

Chronic non-specific low back pain (cNSLBP) is a leading cause of disability. However, its impact on daily activities (e.g., walking in public spaces) remains poorly understood. This study aimed to examine how cNSLBP individuals make navigation decisions when exposed to varying situational and social conditions. Eighteen cNSLBP (45.7 ± 9.2 years, 10 women) and eighteen asymptomatic adults (AA, 43.7 ± 9.5 years, 7 women) walked a 10-meter path to reach a goal and chose to pass between two apertures placed midway according to four conditions: (1) baseline: two large apertures, (2) situational: n…

Social defeat is a potent stressor in both rodents and humans that, under conditions of chronic or severe stress, can lead to persistent social avoidance. This review synthesizes evidence supporting the view that social defeat promotes the formation of social fear memory through associative learning mechanisms that parallel classical fear conditioning. Drawing on preclinical models, we describe how the context of social defeat functions as a conditioned stimulus, while the experience of defeat serves as an unconditioned stimulus, giving rise to fear-related behaviors such as freezing and socia

Social anxiety disorder appears to be a risk factor for cannabis-related problems. Although it is presumed that increases in cannabis craving during elevated social anxiety reflect an intent to cope with greater negative affectivity, it is unclear whether increases in physiological arousal during social stress are related to cannabis craving, especially among those with social anxiety disorder. Similarly, no studies have assessed motivational reasons for cannabis use during elevated social stress. Thus, the current study tested whether increases in state social anxiety (measured subjectively a

BACKGROUND: Aboriginal children have been shown to experience poorer health, compared with their non-Aboriginal counterparts. Differences in health status may be associated with family and social conditions, lifestyle or behaviour, and cultural factors.
DATA AND METHODS: The current study examined the parent-/guardian-reported health of First Nations children living off reserve and Métis children younger than 6. This does not include the 43% of First Nations children who were living on reserves in 2006. Data from the 2006 Aboriginal Children's Survey were used to investigate measures of child…

BACKGROUND: Social exclusion, whether due to physical isolation or the subjective perception of being ignored and unwanted, threatens the fundamental human need for social belonging and is experienced as social pain. While its detrimental effects on mood disorders are well documented, its impact on individuals living with chronic pain remains largely unexplored. This study investigates emotional responses to social exclusion in individuals with chronic pain (CPs) compared to healthy controls (HCs), considering the role of comorbid mood disturbances. It also examines whether behavioral and soci

The health effects of social conditions such as income, education, and employment have been demonstrated to be persistent and wide-reaching. In this study, we examine the effect of social determinants of health, those conditions in which people live, among individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI) who are actively engaged with mental health services. Using a sample of 203 clients at a community mental health clinic, this study (1) explores the prevalence of three social determinants of health: food insecurity, homelessness, and neighborhood disorder, and (2) assesses their associations w…

PROBLEM: Adolescents and young adults with chronic or rare conditions face unique risks to their physical, social and emotional development. Research suggests that peer support improves their quality of life and reduces social isolation. However, there is a paucity of current information considering multiple intervention formats.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: A targeted literature review was conducted to identify peer support interventions and assess their feasibility, acceptability and efficacy for this population. Searches were conducted in MEDLINE, Embase and American Psychological Association Psy

The dramatic expansion of the US penal system during the past 4 decades has led to an increase in adverse health conditions that affect an unprecedented number of individuals. This article first provides an overview of the literature on the immediate and lasting associations between incarceration and physical health, highlighting the diverse health conditions linked with incarceration, including health functioning, infectious disease, chronic conditions, and mortality. Next, we discuss potential explanations for the associations between incarceration and these health conditions, focusing on st

BACKGROUND: As one of the most common psychological problems, social anxiety disorder (SAD) has lots of negative effects on the physical and mental development of individuals, such as decreasing the quality of interpersonal relationships, and even causing depression, suicidal ideation, etc., as well as leads individuals to generate mental illness stigma. The mental illness stigma that individuals perceive affects not only how they perceive themselves (first-person perspective) but also how they perceive others' appraisals of them (third-person perspective), which further exacerbates their anxi

BACKGROUND: Social cognition is critically compromised across neurodegenerative diseases, including the behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinson's disease (PD). However, no previous study has used social cognition and other cognitive tasks to predict diagnoses of these conditions, let alone reporting the brain correlates of prediction outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: We performed a diagnostic classification analysis using social cognition, cognitive screening (CS), and executive function (EF) measures, and explored which anatomical and functional network
