The enhancing therapeutic effect of neonatal jaundice by bifidobacterium through regulating inflammation and gut microbiota in combination with phototherapy-a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hyperbilirubinemia is among the most common conditions in neonates, and phototherapy is currently the most widely used treatment. However, it can induce side effects such as skin rashes, diarrhea, and gut microbiota dysbiosis, particularly affecting Bifidobacterium levels. This study aimed to investigate whether the supplementation of Bifidobacterium can alleviate dysbiosis and improve clinical outcomes in jaundiced neonates. METHODS: A total of 79 jaundiced neonates were enrolled and divided into four groups: Phototherapy Control, M-16V, Bb-12, and the combined M-16V+Bb-12 group.

Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding experience of women with epilepsy in Me'enit community, South West Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Poor obstetric care leading to prenatal brain injury is thought to be one potential cause of epilepsy. Epilepsy affects approximately 0.5-1.0% of women of childbearing age. In the Me'enit community, due to poor delivery practices (delivering in a standing position) and suffering from birth trauma, there are many women with epilepsy. Thus, this study aimed to explore the pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding experiences of women living with epilepsy in the Me'enit community, in southwest Ethiopia. METHODS: A phenomenological approach was employed to gather data on women with e

Functional characterization of rare NRXN1 variants identified in autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Rare genetic variants contribute to the etiology of both autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia (SCZ). Most genetic studies limit their focus to likely gene-disrupting mutations because they are relatively easier to interpret their effects on the gene product. Interpretation of missense variants is also informative to some pathophysiological mechanisms of these neurodevelopmental disorders; however, their contribution has not been elucidated because of relatively small effects. Therefore, we characterized missense variants detected in NRXN1, a well-known neurodevelopmenta

[Why psychotic patients are not drug compliant?].

Improving patient's compliance with antipsychotics is a major issue in psychosis management. As the point is to convince patients to take their drugs, we have to better understand why they should want or not want to do that. Compliance is actually a complex behavior, involving many psychosocial factors. Thus, we conducted a survey to assess compliance rate and to investigate determinant compliance factors of psychotic outpatients (according to CIM-10 diagnosis). Method - Investigated factors were selected according both to biomedical researches and to psychosocial theories (Health Belief Model

Quality of life in patients treated with radiochemotherapy for primary diagnosis of anal cancer.

Anal cancer and the related treatment are generally known to affect patients' quality of life. The aim of this study was to assess self-reported quality of life (QoL) of anal cancer patients after combined radiation and chemotherapy, and to identify patient-, disease-, and therapy-related factors associated with QoL. A total of 94 patients treated with definitive chemoradiation for anal cancer at our institution in the period from 2004 to 2018 were identified from our database. QoL was assessed in the remaining 52 patients using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire (cancer-specific QoL) and the new

Quantifying population preferences around vaccination against severe but rare diseases: A conjoint analysis among French university students, 2016.

BACKGROUND: Several concepts are available to explain vaccine decision making by individual and inter-individual factors, including risk perception, social conformism and altruism. However, only a few studies have quantified the weight of these determinants in vaccine acceptance. Using a conjoint analysis tool, we aimed at eliciting preferences in a student population regarding vaccination against a rare, severe and rapidly evolving hypothetical disease, similar to meningococcal serogroup C meningitis or measles. METHODS: During March-May 2016, we conducted an emailing survey among university

The most common type of FTLD-FUS (aFTLD-U) is associated with a distinct clinical form of frontotemporal dementia but is not related to mutations in the FUS gene.

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) is clinically, pathologically and genetically heterogeneous. Recent descriptions of a pathological sub-type that is ubiquitin positive, TDP-43 negative and immunostains positive for the Fused in Sarcoma protein (FUS) raises the question whether it is associated with a distinct clinical phenotype identifiable on clinical grounds, and whether mutations in the Fused in Sarcoma gene (FUS) might also be associated with FTLD. Examination of a pathological series of 118 cases of FTLD from two centres, showing tau-negative, ubiquitin-positive pathology, reveale

Alcohol consumption and other maternal risk factors for fetal alcohol syndrome among three distinct samples of women before, during, and after pregnancy: the risk is relative.

Data were obtained from three samples of women of childbearing age. One sample of women is from prenatal clinics serving Plains Indian women. The second sample is of women from the Plains whose children were referred to special diagnostic developmental clinics, as their children were believed to have developmental issues consistent with prenatal alcohol consumption. The third sample is of women from South Africa, each of whom has given birth to a child diagnosed with full fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Data across samples conform to expected trends on many variables. For example, the maternal a

Daily temporal patterns of heroin and cocaine use and craving: relationship with business hours regardless of actual employment status.

Real-time monitoring of behavior using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) has provided detailed data about daily temporal patterns of craving and use in cigarette smokers. We have collected similar data from a sample of cocaine and heroin users. Here we analyzed it in the context of its relationship with a societal construct of daily temporal organization: 9-to-5 business hours. In a 28-week prospective study, 112 methadone-maintained polydrug-abusing individuals initiated an electronic-diary entry and provided data each time they used cocaine, heroin, or both during weeks 4 to 28. EMA data

The impact of exposure to images of ideally thin models in TV commercials on eating behavior: an experimental study with women diagnosed with bulimia nervosa.

This study investigates whether eating behavior in women with diagnosed bulimia nervosa is influenced by prior exposure to images of ideally thin models. Twenty-six participants diagnosed with bulimia nervosa (BN) and 30 normal controls (NC) were exposed to body-related and neutral TV commercials; then food that typically triggers binge eating was provided, and the amount of food eaten was measured. No significant difference for food intake between NC and BN could be found, but food intake for BN was predicted by the degree of thoughts related to eating behaviors during exposure to the thin id

Reasons for substance use among people with psychotic disorders: method triangulation approach.

Substance use disorders (SUD) are common among people with psychotic disorders and are associated with many negative consequences. Understanding the reasons for substance use in this population may allow for the development of more effective prevention and intervention strategies. We examined reasons for tobacco, alcohol, or cannabis use among people with psychotic disorders. Sixty-four participants with a diagnosed psychotic disorder completed a self-report reasons for use questionnaire. A subset of eight participants completed semi-structured qualitative interviews. Both the qualitative and

Are psychological attitudes towards vaccination an expression of personality? A cross-sectional study on COVID-19 vaccination in France.

BACKGROUND: The capacity of the 7C model's psychological antecedents, which include confidence in vaccines, complacency, convenience, calculation, collective responsibility, confidence in the wider system, and social conformism, to explain variance in COVID-19 vaccine intentions and behaviours has been documented. However, it remains unclear whether the attitudes represented by the 7C psychological antecedents are specific to vaccination or if they are, in fact, an expression of underlying personality traits. METHODS: From February to June 2022, French adults completed self-administered quest

Exploring the directionality in the relationship between descriptive and injunctive parental and peer norms and snacking behavior in a three-year-cross-lagged study.

BACKGROUND: People's eating behavior is assumed to be influenced by what other people do (perceived descriptive norms) and what others approve of (perceived injunctive norms). It has been suggested that adolescents are more susceptible to peer norms than parental norms, because they experience a strong need for group acceptance that leads to conforming to peer group norms. The current study examined changes in snacking behavior and four types of social norms (i.e., parental and peer descriptive and injunctive norms) that promoted fruit and vegetable intake among adolescents. This study was the
