Problematic social networking use and loneliness among college students: a serial mediation model of basic psychological need satisfaction and self-acceptance.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the association between problematic social network use and loneliness among university students, framed by Self-Determination Theory. METHODS: A sample of 992 undergraduates (mean age = 20.31 years; 488 males, 49.2%; 504 females, 50.8%) from three universities in Zhejiang, a province in Southeast China, completed standardized measures. Serial mediation analysis using PROCESS Model 6 examined whether basic psychological need satisfaction and self-acceptance sequentially mediate this relationship. RESULTS: Results confirmed a positive direct link between p

Transdiagnostic links of reward processing in obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression.

OBJECTIVES: Transdiagnostic models aim to uncover shared mechanisms across mental disorders. Reward responsiveness (the ability to experience pleasure from rewarding stimuli) is a plausible, yet underexplored, transdiagnostic mechanism linking obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and depression. This study used network analysis to (1) examine how key reward responsiveness domains are interlinked in individuals with OCD and (2) explore how each domain is uniquely associated with OCD and depression. METHODS: A total of 1345 individuals with a history of OCD symptoms (ages 18-88, 71 % women) from

Causal Dynamics of Social Gaze in Primate Prefrontal-Amygdala Networks Revealed by Dynamic Bayesian Modeling.

Social gaze is a fundamental channel of primate communication, shaping dynamic interactions and fostering mutual understanding. While prior studies have mapped the behavioral correlates of social gaze across the prefrontal-amygdala circuits, the causal architecture of these interactions remains poorly understood. Here, we develop an algorithm to integrate independently recorded sessions from male macaques into "super-sessions", validated using ground-truth synthetic data, enabling the reconstruction of simultaneous multi-area recordings aligned to matched gaze sequences. Applying Dynamic Bayes

Urolithin A Inhibits Anterior Basolateral Amygdala to Ventral Hippocampal CA1 Circuit to Ameliorate Amyloid-β-Impaired Social Ability.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and social withdrawal are highly prevalent among patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the neural circuit mechanisms underlying these symptoms remain elusive, and there is a need for effective prevention strategies. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to elucidate the neural circuitry mechanisms underlying social anxiety in AD. METHODS: We utilized 5xFAD mice and conducted a series of experiments including optogenetic manipulation, Tandem Mass Tag-labeled proteome analysis, behavioral assessments, and immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS: In 5xFAD mice, we observed sig

The interplay between mental health, ecological factors, and problematic smartphone use: a network analysis in adolescents with major depressive disorder.

Adolescence is a critical period for the onset of major depressive disorder (MDD), during which emotional symptoms frequently co-occur with environmental adversity and maladaptive behavioral coping. In China, these processes may be further shaped by left-behind experience (LBE) - a prevalent structural vulnerability in which children grow up separated from migrating parents. To clarify these relationships, we applied network analysis in a clinical sample of 2341 adolescents (Mage = 14.99 years,77.92% female) with MDD. Participants were recruited from 14 psychiatric outpatient clinics across Ch

Life-Space Mobility, Transportation, and the Companionship Network of Members of a Hispanic Senior Center.

OBJECTIVES: Companions (i.e., friends who spend time together) are important for the well-being of older adults. Senior centers in the United States are places for older adults to participate in group activities and form and maintain companionships. However, differences in mobility and transportation may affect the ability of older adults to leverage senior center activities into actual companionships. METHODS: This social network analysis was conducted to characterize the companionship network among members of a senior center in relation to their life-space mobility and transportation resour…

Assessing individual and neighborhood social factors in child oral health-related quality of life: a multilevel analysis.

PURPOSE: It has been suggested that subjective measures of oral health are influenced by both individual and contextual characteristics. This study assessed the relationship between neighborhood and individual social networks and child oral health-related quality of life (COHRQoL). METHODS: This study followed a cross-sectional design using a multistage sample of 478 children aged 1-5 years old. Caregivers completed the Brazilian version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) and answered questions related to socioeconomic status and social network. The dental examination pr

Sexual assault history and social support: six general population studies.

We evaluated the association of sexual assault history with later social support, operationalized as network size, marital status, presence of a partner, frequency of network contacts, and emotional support from friends and family, from spouse, and from partner. Data came from six independent general population surveys (pooled N = 9,865) whose results were summarized using meta-analysis. People who had been sexually assaulted were less likely than others to be married (OR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.65, 0.87) or to report at least weekly contact with friends and relatives (OR = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.31, 0.7

Neighborhoods, Networks, and HIV Care Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: Proposal for a Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: The majority of people living with HIV in the United States are men who have sex with men (MSM), with race- and ethnicity-based disparities in HIV rates and care continuum. In order to uncover the neighborhood- and network-involved pathways that produce HIV care outcome disparities, systematic, theory-based investigation of the specific and intersecting neighborhood and social network characteristics that relate to the HIV care continuum must be engaged. OBJECTIVE: Using socioecological and intersectional conceptual frameworks, we aim to identify individual-, neighborhood-, and ne

A Gentle Introduction to Bayesian Network Meta-Analysis Using an Automated R Package.

Network meta-analysis is an extension of standard meta-analysis. It allows researchers to build a network of evidence to compare multiple interventions that may have not been compared directly in existing publications. With a Bayesian approach, network meta-analysis can be used to obtain a posterior probability distribution of all the relative treatment effects, which allows for the estimation of relative treatment effects to quantify the uncertainty of parameter estimates, and to rank all the treatments in the network. Ranking treatments using both direct and indirect evidence can provide gui

Future destinations: how people cured of hepatitis C using direct acting antiviral drugs progress in a new HCV-free world. A thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of Direct-Acting Antivirals (DAAs) transformed Hepatitis C (HCV) treatment, despite this uptake of DAAs remains lower than required to meet the WHO Sustainable Development Goal (3.3). Treatment with interferon was suggested to be able to deliver important outcomes for people who use drugs in addition to a viral cure, such as social redemption, and shift from a stigmatised identity. There is a lack of understanding if DAAs can deliver these transformative outcomes. METHODS: This recurrent cross-sectional study combines qualitative semi-structured interviews and dem

Socio-Emotional Difficulties Observed in Alexithymia Reflect Altered Interactions of the Semantic and Monoaminergic Neuromodulatory Brain Networks.

Alexithymia is a multidimensional construct characterized by difficulties in identifying and describing feelings and reduced ability to engage in abstract thinking. Although often co-occurring with other psychological and neurodevelopmental conditions such as anxiety, depression and autism spectrum disorders, alexithymia is believed to be associated with unique alterations within the socio-emotional brain networks. With the semantic and neuromodulatory brainstem systems playing a key role in social and affective cognition, the current work aimed to study their contributions to alexithymia in u

Personal and Network Dynamics in Performance of Knowledge Workers: A Study of Australian Breast Radiologists.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this paper, we propose a theoretical model based upon previous studies about personal and social network dynamics of job performance. We provide empirical support for this model using real-world data within the context of the Australian radiology profession. An examination of radiologists' professional network topology through structural-positional and relational dimensions and radiologists' personal characteristics in terms of knowledge, experience and self-esteem is provided. Thirty one breast imaging radiologists completed a purpose designed questionnaire regarding

Social capital in South Africa's minibus taxi industry: networks, trust, and challenges.

INTRODUCTION: The minibus taxi industry is a cornerstone of South Africa's public transport system, providing daily mobility to millions of commuters, particularly in low-income and peri-urban areas. Despite its economic and social importance, the industry remains largely informal, characterized by precarious labor conditions, weak regulatory oversight, and recurring conflict among operators. This paper examines how social capital - understood as networks, trust, and shared norms - shapes governance, labor relations, and operational practices within the industry. METHODS: This study employs a

GLIDE: combining local methods and diffusion state embeddings to predict missing interactions in biological networks.

MOTIVATION: One of the core problems in the analysis of biological networks is the link prediction problem. In particular, existing interactions networks are noisy and incomplete snapshots of the true network, with many true links missing because those interactions have not yet been experimentally observed. Methods to predict missing links have been more extensively studied for social than for biological networks; it was recently argued that there is some special structure in protein-protein interaction (PPI) network data that might mean that alternate methods may outperform the best methods f

Patient-reported outcomes and therapeutic affordances of social media: findings from a global online survey of people with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) from social media use in chronic disease management continue to emerge. While many published articles suggest the potential for social media is positive, there is a lack of robust examination into mediating mechanisms that might help explain social media's therapeutic value. This study presents findings from a global online survey of people with chronic pain (PWCP) to better understand how they use social media as part of self-management. OBJECTIVE: Our aim is to improve understanding of the various health outcomes reported by PWCP by paying close
