Neighborhood environment and the wellbeing of older tenants in planned housing.

The relationship between neighborhood characteristics and the well-being of elderly tenants was studied through a national area probability sample of 153 planned housing environments and over 3000 tenants in them. Six indices of tenants' psychological and social well-being were used as dependent variables in hierarchical multiple regressions where neighborhood characteristics were entered after personal factors were controlled. Neighborhood environmental factors accounted for a significant proportion of the residual variance in every index of well-being. In general, quiet neighborhoods in smal

Employment in family planning and women's status in Bangladesh.

This study investigates how employment in family planning affects the status of community workers. The focus is on three critical variables: prestige, professional status, and social influence. The data are derived from a focus-group study conducted in 1987-88 in the Maternal and Child Health and Family Planning Project in Matlab, Bangladesh. Focus-group sessions were held with community workers, their husbands, community leaders, and community women. Results show that although community workers initially faced intense hostility in the community, they succeeded in maintaining the prestige that

The combined impact of social isolation and unhealthy risk score on mortality risk: a study from two prospective cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation and health impacting factors (used to calculate a unhealth risk score) pose significant public health challenges globally. This study aims to investigate the associations between social isolation, unhealthy risk score, and the risk of mortality among Chinese and American older adults. METHODS: Seven thousand nine hundred seventy-three Chinese older adults from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and 6,207 American older adults from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) were analyzed. The exposures were social isolation and an unhealthy risk

Community social networks, individual social participation and dietary behavior among older Japanese adults: Examining mediation using nonlinear structural equation models for three-wave longitudinal data.

Community social networks positively affect older adults' dietary behavior, but the underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. This study investigated if the relationship between community social networks and dietary behavior is mediated by social participation, and whether the influence of community social networks differs across sociodemographic groups. We conducted a cross-lagged panel mediation analysis employing nonlinear structural equation modeling using panel data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES), a longitudinal study of Japanese older adults in 2010, 2013, and 2016,

Coexistence of balance and hierarchies: An ego perspective to explain empirical networks.

The formation of positive and negative relations between individuals in social networks can be described by different approaches. Two prominent mechanisms are structural balance and status hierarchies. Balance motivates stability among friends and enemies in triads (e.g. an enemy of my friend is my enemy). Status considers respect and disregard originating from social hierarchy (e.g. positive relations towards those we respect). We demonstrate that integrating the two mechanisms through the concept of ego dynamics is key to understanding observable patterns in many social groups. We propose an

Factors associated with the utilization and costs of health and social services in frail elderly patients.

BACKGROUND: Universal access is one of the major aims in public health and social care. Services should be provided on the basis of individual needs. However, municipal autonomy and the fragmentation of services may jeopardize universal access and lead to variation between municipalities in the delivery of services. This paper aims to identify patient-level characteristics and municipality-level service patterns that may have an influence on the use and costs of health and social services of frail elderly patients. METHODS: Hierarchical analysis was applied to estimate the effects of patient

Why Singles Prefer to Retire Later.

This study goes beyond a purely financial perspective to explain why single older workers prefer to retire later than their partnered counterparts. We aim to show how the work (i.e., its social meaning) and home domain (i.e., spousal influence) contribute to differences in retirement preferences by relationship status. Analyses were based on multiactor data collected in 2015 among older workers in the Netherlands (N = 6,357) and (where applicable) their spouses. Results revealed that the social meaning of work differed by relationship status but not always as expected. In a mediation analysis,

Impact of Social Network Size and Contact Frequency on Resilience in Community-Dwelling Healthy Older Adults Living Alone in the Republic of Korea.

The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of social health and its association with resilience among older adults living alone excluded from the public care service due to their relatively good health. For this cross-sectional study, we surveyed older adults aged between 65 and 80 years using questionnaires to measure the social health status and levels of resilience of the participants. We conducted a hierarchical regression analysis to confirm the association between resilience and social network. Finally, data from 266 community-dwelling older adults were analyzed. We dis

Life course models for upper aero-digestive tract cancer.

Upper aero-digestive tract (UADT) cancers are collectively cancers of various human body sites, such as the oral cavity, pharynx, oesophagus and larynx. Worldwide, they are the fourth most frequent cancer type and the fourth most common cause of mortality from cancer. Many studies have shown that several chronic diseases, such as cancer, which occur more commonly in later adulthood, are influenced by social and psychological circumstances during birth, childhood, adolescence and early adult life. It is suggested that the build up of problematic circumstances throughout life is the cause of dis

Asperger's syndrome: three cases and a discussion.

The recently revived academic interest in and controversy over the subject of Asperger's syndrome is briefly discussed. Gillberg & Gillberg's operational criteria for its definition are used to isolate three cases of the syndrome presenting over a single year to a mental handicap service. The cases are described in detail. Common themes and associations with the available literature are discussed. In all three cases, the struggle for clarity in the syndrome's nature or specificity in the literature is also reflected in aspects of their clinical management.

Synergistic effects of cardiovascular health and social isolation on adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) affect approximately 20% pregnant women, and their incidence is increasing. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cardiovascular health (CVH) during pregnancy on APOs. We analyzed data from 14,930 pregnant women in the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study. CVH status during pregnancy was assessed using the eight components of Life's Essential 8. APOs were defined as composite outcomes encompassing preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, preterm birth, and small for gestational age. The numbers of partici

Social and socioeconomic factors and cognitive outcomes in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Race and social and socioeconomic conditions are associated with disability outcomes in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Given that cognitive impairment is common in MS, social and structural factors may also relate to cognitive outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between social and socioeconomic factors and cognitive function in adults with MS and to determine whether these associations differ by race. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from 274 adults with MS (average age 50.9 ± 11.9 years; 77.4% female; 72.3% White). Key social and socioeconomi
