Voices of Young Deaf Adults: Supporting Adolescent Social Capital Development.

For most young people, social capital plays an important role in transitioning to postsecondary education and employment. For youth who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), social capital can mitigate negative effects of challenges they will likely encounter after high school. In phase 2 of a two-phase qualitative study in Australia, we investigated DHH young adults' perspectives on how DHH adolescents could best be supported to develop and use social capital to benefit their postschool transition. Nine university students whose primary communication mode was spoken language participated in semi

The effects of childhood maltreatment on social support, inflammation, and depressive symptoms in adulthood.

RATIONALE: Social Safety Theory (SST) suggests that social threats increase inflammation, exacerbating health risks, but that social support may decrease inflammatory signaling. One of the key health problems affected by both social forces and inflammation is major depression. OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to test aspects of the SST, to understand how social support and inflammation may mediate the effects of childhood maltreatment on depressive symptoms in adulthood. METHODS: This study utilized data from the national Midlife Development in the United States study (n = 1969; mean age …

Social Robots for Supporting Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Diagnosis and Treatment.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a severe psychiatric disorder with profound public health impact due to its high prevalence, chronic nature, accompanying functional impairment, and frequently occurring comorbidities. Early PTSD symptoms, often observed shortly after trauma exposure, abate with time in the majority of those who initially express them, yet leave a significant minority with chronic PTSD. While the past several decades of PTSD research have produced substantial knowledge regarding the mechanisms and consequences of this debilitating disorder, the diagnosis of and availabl

Who is at Risk? Social Support, Relationship Dissolution, and Illness in a Rural Context.

This study focuses on a cohort of adults (40-plus) in rural South Africa to unpack associations between physical health and receipt of social support, and the extent to which these associations were moderated by marital status. We use logistic regression to estimate the odds of having received emotional, physical, or financial support separately for men (N = 2247) and women (N = 2609). Our results suggest having an Activity of Daily Living (ADL) limitation or having at least one chronic condition was not significantly associated with social support receipt for women, but having an ADL limitati…

Overview of advances in educational and social supports for young persons with NCL disorders.

Vision loss, dementia, and motor and speech declines all impact the educational experience of individuals with Batten disease and can adversely impact effective learning. There are as yet limited data to support evidence-based approaches to meeting the educational needs of affected individuals. This paper provides an overview of recent work to evaluate and address educational issues with a life-long perspective relevant to individuals with juvenile-onset neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (JNCL) and the professionals that provide them with educational support. In particular, several main activitie

Social Services Professionals' Views of Barriers to Supporting Homeless Noncustodial Fathers.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate barriers to service for homeless non-custodial fathers from the perspective of social service professionals who work directly to assist men with securing housing while meeting the demands of fatherhood. BACKGROUND: The population of homeless fathers in the United States is increasing. Longitudinal studies show that although homeless noncustodial fathers and mothers face similar risk factors and barriers to services, research on minimizing risk factors and barriers for noncustodial fathers is limited compared with that for noncustodial mothers. METHOD: The sample inc

Cortical Oscillatory Mechanisms Supporting the Control of Human Social-Emotional Actions.

The human anterior prefrontal cortex (aPFC) is involved in regulating social-emotional behavior, presumably by modulating effective connectivity with downstream parietal, limbic, and motor cortices. Regulating that connectivity might rely on theta-band oscillations (4-8 Hz), a brain rhythm known to create overlapping periods of excitability between distant regions by temporally releasing neurons from inhibition. Here, we used MEG to understand how aPFC theta-band oscillations implement control over prepotent social-emotional behaviors; that is, the control over automatically elicited approach

Maternal Stressors and Social Support and Risks of Delivering Babies With Gastroschisis or Hypospadias.

We examined the association of maternal stressful life events and social support with risks of gastroschisis and hypospadias, using data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a population-based case-control study of US births taking place in 2006-2011. We examined maternal self-reports of 7 life events and 3 sources of social support during the periconceptional period among mothers of 593 gastroschisis cases, 1,142 male hypospadias cases, and 4,399 nonmalformed controls. Responses to the questions on stressful life events were summed to form an index (higher is worse), as were resp…

The role of 'social support' in the experience of fibromyalgia - narratives from South Africa.

This paper focuses on the role of 'social support' in the experience of fibromyalgia (a musculoskeletal pain disorder) in South Africa. In-depth semi-structured interviews were used to collect narratives from 15 participants. Sources of social support constitute important mechanisms for coping with the illness experience of fibromyalgia. In providing a space for consultation and validation of the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, and the person living with the condition, people giving support fulfil a critical role in shaping the experience. The findings show how support from family, partners, and pe…

Postnatal depression and social supports in Vietnamese, Arabic and Anglo-Celtic mothers.

The significance of a western woman's social supports to postnatal depression is well documented. We examine which deficits in components of their social support network are associated with postnatal depression in women from a non-English-speaking background. The social support network and postnatal mood of 105 Anglo-Celtic, 113 Vietnamese and 98 Arabic women were assessed at 6 weeks postpartum. The role of social supports in determining scores on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was analysed using multiple regressions. For Anglo-Celtic women, low postnatal mood was associated w…

Moderating effects of physical abuse and perceived social support on the potential to abuse.

This study investigated the moderating effects of perceived prepubertal social support on the relationship between prepubertal childhood physical abuse and child abuse potential as well as on the relationship between a childhood history of abuse and conflict and depth in adult relationships. Three hundred and sixty-nine undergraduate men and women were classified as abused or nonabused based on their responses to the Childhood History Questionnaire. Multiple regression analyses revealed interactions of social support and a childhood history of physical abuse on both the potential to abuse and …

Peer support needs and engagement among people with multiple sclerosis: Associations with social support, loneliness and wellbeing: A cross-sectional study.

Peer support may improve wellbeing in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). This study examined associations between peer support, social support, loneliness and wellbeing in PwMS, along with sociodemographic and health predictors of peer support need and engagement in online and in-person contexts. A cross-sectional survey, co-designed with public and patient involvement, was deployed among 218 PwMS in Ireland, with regression analyses used to explore predictors of needs for, and engagement with, peer support. Increasing disability levels and fewer years with MS were associated with higher p…
