Innovative Data-Driven Approaches to Community Health and Prosperity: Lessons From the City of Lauderhill's Engagement and Improvement Strategy.

Research demonstrates that social vulnerability has a disproportionate effect on the utilization of health care services among minority populations. The City of Lauderhill (CoL) is predominantly composed of racial/ethnic minorities, including a significant proportion of Caribbean-born and foreign-born residents, particularly from Jamaica and Haiti. CoL has one of the highest social vulnerability indices in the US and is designated by the US Housing & Urban Development (HUD) as a low-income area. The COVID-19 pandemic and existing community challenges set the stage for forming The Lauderhill He…

New onset of depression in aging women and men: contributions of social, psychological, behavioral, and somatic predictors in the community.

BACKGROUND: Based on the vulnerability-stress model, we aimed to (1) determine new onset of depression in individuals who had not shown evidence of depression at baseline (5 years earlier) and (2) identify social, psychological, behavioral, and somatic predictors. METHODS: Longitudinal data of N = 10 036 participants (40-79 years) were evaluated who had no evidence of depression at baseline based on Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), no history of depression, or intake of antidepressants. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to predict the onset of depression. RESULTS: Preval

The little things are big: evaluation of a compassionate community approach for promoting the health of vulnerable persons.

BACKGROUND: Vulnerable persons are individuals whose life situations create or exacerbate vulnerabilities, such as low income, housing insecurity and social isolation. Vulnerable people often receive a patchwork of health and social care services that does not appropriately address their needs. The cost of health and social care services escalate when these individuals live without appropriate supports. Compassionate Communities apply a population health theory of practice wherein citizens are mobilized along with health and social care supports to holistically address the needs of persons exp

Socialization Processes and Clergy Offenders.

This article uses feminist theory to investigate how the socialization processes used to maintain the clergy community in the Roman Catholic Church contributes to a vulnerability in some clergy for sexually abusing children. This vulnerability is identified first in an examination of the literature on the impact of socialization processes on clergy offenders between the 1960s and 1980s. A comparison is then made with the implications of the apostolic exhortation, Pastores Dabo Vobis, which provides a theological basis to clergy formation. The article argues that the document works to ensure a

Area Vulnerability and Disparities in Therapy for Patients With Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma.

IMPORTANCE: Area-level measures of sociodemographic disadvantage may be associated with racial and ethnic disparities with respect to receipt of treatment for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) but have not been investigated previously, to our knowledge. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between area-level measures of social vulnerability and racial and ethnic disparities in the treatment of US Medicare beneficiaries with mRCC from 2015 through 2019. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study included Medicare beneficiaries older than 65 years who were diagnose…

Beyond social media time: online self-disclosure, depressive symptoms, somatic complaints, and suicidal ideation in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Screen time alone may not adequately capture adolescents' digital vulnerability. This study examined whether private online self-disclosure, depressive symptoms, and somatic complaints were associated with suicidal ideation beyond time spent on social media. METHODS: A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 1364 adolescents aged 11-19 years. Participants completed a questionnaire on social media use and private online self-disclosure, the Children's Depression Inventory-2, and selected Youth Self-Report items assessing somatic complaints and suicidal ideation. Social workers' views and experiences of self-care practices: a qualitative interview study.

Self-care is increasingly advocated as necessary for improving social workers' wellbeing. However, it remains a contested term, with limited understanding of social workers' views and experiences of what it constitutes in practice. This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews with nine social workers from three local authorities in Scotland. Informed by vulnerability theory, a six-phase thematic analysis was applied to explore social workers' views and experiences of self-care practices. Three key themes emerged: (1) understanding and conceptualizing self-care, illustrating pract

Vulnerability in nursing science: a principle-based concept analysis.

BACKGROUND: The term "vulnerability" is widely used across disciplines and variably defined within nursing, reflecting differing theoretical and methodological assumptions. This ambiguity hinders coherent application in research and practice. A broad understanding of vulnerability in healthcare is susceptibility to risks and/or illnesses, implying the need for special protection or treatment. METHODS: To clarify the concept of vulnerability in nursing, its disciplinary meanings were synthesized and its maturity was evaluated by using a principle-based concept analysis according to Penrod and

Exposure, hazard, and vulnerability all contribute to Schistosoma haematobium re-infection in northern Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Infectious disease risk is driven by three interrelated components: exposure, hazard, and vulnerability. For schistosomiasis, exposure occurs through contact with water, which is often tied to daily activities. Water contact, however, does not imply risk unless the environmental hazard of snails and parasites is also present in the water. By increasing reliance on hazardous activities and environments, socio-economic vulnerability can hinder reductions in exposure to a hazard. We aimed to quantify the contributions of exposure, hazard, and vulnerability to the presence and intensit

Impaired emotional regulation in the elderly men following female partner loss.

Increased vulnerability in elderly men to their partner's loss by death, and also due to dementia, is discussed through the lens of attachment theory. This vulnerability stems from compromised emotional regulation, reward processing, and limited social support. For this reason, dementia-related ambiguous loss is particularly challenging for them because it requires complex emotional adjustment, adding to caregiving and household duties.

Identifying Opportunities for Collaboration Across the Social Sciences to Reach the 10-10-10: A Multilevel Approach.

BACKGROUND: The national and global strategy to combat HIV, often referred to as the "90-90-90," aims to diagnose 90% of people living with HIV, get 90% of those diagnosed onto antiretroviral treatment (ART), and achieve viral suppression in 90% of those on ART. The remaining 10-10-10 who will be undiagnosed, not on ART, or not virally suppressed, include vulnerable persons and populations most affected by social determinants of health. Given their foci on the social determinants of health at the individual, social, and structural levels, social scientists are in a prime position to help reach

Social inequalities as effect modifiers of active case-finding strategies for tuberculosis in Brazil: an ecological study.

BACKGROUND: Social inequalities play a crucial role in the incidence of TB, making it plausible that they act as effect modifiers on the imp … gation (HCI) of new TB cases. We also assessed the Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI) and the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) as potential effect modifier variables. RESULTS: The TB detection rate was positively associated with both the proportion of PCTs conducting community-based ACF and the proportion conducting HCI. These associations weakened as MHDI incr …

Emergency department-based interventions affecting social determinants of health in the United States: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDoH) have significant implications for health outcomes in the United States. Emergency departments (EDs) function as the safety nets of the American health care system, caring for many vulnerable populations. ED-based interventions to assess social risk and mitigate social needs have been reported in the literature. However, the breadth and scope of these interventions have not been evaluated. As the field of social emergency medicine (SEM) expands, a mapping and categorization of previous interventions may help shape future research. We sought to id

For socially engaged science: The dynamics of knowledge production in the Fiocruz graduate program in the framework of the "Brazil Without Extreme Poverty Plan".

Public policy planning associated with the management of the Science, Technology, and Innovation is decisive to improve public health. It is important to develop novel strategies to plan, supervise, manage, use and evaluate research using indicators that extrapolates metrics in current use. In 2011, the Brazilian government introduced the Brazil Without Extreme Poverty plan (BWEP) that aimed to integrate several conditional cash transfer programs (CCT). The original that aimed to integrate of the CCTs were expanded in order to integrate social justice and dignity that induced several actions t

Linking the exposome to frailty: pathways, mechanisms, clinical implications, and prevention.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a state of vulnerability that emerges from cumulative, non-genetic influences acting across the life course. This review applies an exposome lens, integrating general external exposures, specific external exposures, and internal biologic processes. We aimed to synthesize how social, environmental, behavioural, clinical, and biological exposures contribute to frailty and identify clinically actionable prevention targets. METHODS: This structured narrative review synthesized epidemiological, clinical, environmental, and mechanistic evidence linking exposome-related exposu

Social Risk Profile, Planetary Health Diet, and Mortality Risk in Individuals with Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease: A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The individual and combined associations of social vulnerability and diet quality with long-term health outcomes in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) remain unclear. The authors aimed to examine the independent and cumulative associations of diet quality and social vulnerability with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among US adults with MASLD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors included 13 518 adults with MASLD from the 1999-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, with mortality follow-up through 2019. Diet qua…
