Somatosensory Plasticity in Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy Following Constraint Induced Movement Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (HCP) experience upper limb somatosensory and motor deficits. Although constraint-induce … IONS: Improvements in somatosensory clinical function and neural processing in the affected primary somatosensory cortex in children with HCP were observed after a somatosensory enhanced CIMT program. Further investigation is warranted to continue to evaluate the effectiveness of a sensory enhanced CIMT program in larger samples and controlled study designs.

Long-term effects of concussion on relevancy-based modulation of somatosensory-evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation was to better understand the effects of concussions on the ability to selectively up or down-regulate incoming somatosensory information based on relevance. METHODS: Median nerve somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) were elicited from electrical stimulation and recorded from scalp electrodes while participants completed tasks that altered the relevance of specific somatosensory information being conveyed along the stimulated nerve. RESULTS: Within the control group, SEP amplitudes for task-relevant somatosensory information were significantly gr

Distinguishing the activity of adjacent somatosensory nuclei within the brainstem using 3T fMRI.

Experimental evidence in animal models indicates that the brainstem plays a major role in sensory modulation. However, mapping functional ac … vity of neighbouring somatosensory nuclei can be delineated in the brainstem, thalamus, and primary somatosensory cortex (S1). Whilst traditional univariate approaches offered limited differentiation between adjacent hand and face activation in the brainstem, multivariate classification enabled above-chance decoding of these activity patterns across S1, the thalamus, …

Neural mechanisms of pain relief through paying attention to painful stimuli.

A commonly held belief suggests that turning one's attention away from pain reduces it, whereas paying attention to pain increases it. Howev … stimuli. The analgesic effects of paying attention to painful stimuli were mediated by the primary somatosensory cortex and goal-directed attention regions in the prefrontal and parietal cortex. These findings suggest that suppressing early somatosensory processing through top-down modulation is the key mechanism of the analgesic effects of paying attention to painfu …

Assessment of reorganization in the sensorimotor cortex after upper limb amputation.

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to investigate plastic changes occurring in the motor and somatosensory cortex after upper limb amputation, and their possible relationship to phantom pain. METHOD: To assess these plastic changes, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and source localization of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP). Eleven patients with upper limb amputation were investigated. The phantom pain intensity was assessed by visual analogue scaling (VAS). RESULTS: Using TMS mapping, we found a significant lateralization of the amplitude-weighted centre of gravity (P<0.01) and an enl…

Evidence for an abnormal cortical sensory processing in dystonia: selective enhancement of lower limb P37-N50 somatosensory evoked potential.

We evaluated brain stem P30, contralateral frontal N37, and the vertex-ipsilateral central P37, N50 somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) obtained in response to stimulation of the tibial nerve in 10 patients with idiopathic dystonia. Results were compared with those obtained in 10 healthy subjects matched for age and sex. The amplitude of the brain stem P30 potential and of the contralateral frontal N37 response in dystonic patients was not significantly different from that recorded in normal subjects. The vertex- ipsilateral central P37-N50 complex, which is thought to originate in the pre-

[Neurophysiologic study of 2 cases of hemianesthesia as a result of subcortical lesions. Results of recording far-field somatosensory evoked potentials].

The volume-conducted responses of the lemniscal pathways to median nerve stimulation at wrist may be recorded on the scalp (far-field potentials). These positive far-field SEPs components are widely distributed on the scalp and their peaking latencies vary between 9 and 15 milliseconds. In normal adults a maximum of 4 far-field potentials (P9, P11, P13 and P14) may be individualized; two of them (P9 and P14) are constant. These SEPs were studied in two patients with lateralized somatosensory loss; one with a cervico-medullary traumatic lesion, the other with a thalamic infarct. These observati

SII and the fronto-parietal areas are involved in visually cued tactile top-down spatial attention: a functional MRI study.

Visual cue-oriented, tactile top-down attention (vTA) has been well investigated behaviorally. However, vTA-related brain activation remains unclear, and whether SI (primary somatosensory cortex) or SII (secondary somatosensory cortex) is modulated by the top-down process of tactile cognition remains particularly controversial. We used the Posner paradigm in which a visual spatial cue directed attention to a tactile target [tactile spatial attention (TS) task]. The TS is compared with a visual nonspatially cued, tactile attention task [tactile neutral attention (TN) task]. The behavioral resul…

Voronoi-based spatial analysis reveals selective interneuron changes in the cortex of FALS mice.

The neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis affects lower motoneurons and corticospinal cells. Mice expressing human mutant superoxide dismutase (SOD)1 provide widely investigated models of the familial form of disease, but information on cortical changes in these mice is still limited. We here analyzed the spatial organization of interneurons characterized by parvalbumin immunoreactivity in the motor, somatosensory, and visual cortical areas of SOD1(G93A) mice. Cell number and sociological spatial behavior were assessed by digital charts of cell location in cortical samples, c

Projections to the inferior olive of the cat. I. Comparisons of input from the dorsal column nuclei, the lateral cervical nucleus, the spino-olivary pathways, the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum.

The present experiments compare the projections from the dorsal column nuclei (DCN), the lateral cervical nucleus (LCN), the spino-olivary pathways (SO), the motor cortex (Ms1) and the cerebellum (CB) to the inferior olive of the cat. A differential labeling strategy was used for these comparisons. It was found that projections from the contralateral DCN and LCN and the ipsilateral SO overlap extensively with each other in the dorsal accessory division of the inferior olive and the caudal half of the medial accessory olive. Projections from the contralateral motor cortex partially overlap thes

Neural representation in M1 and S1 cortex of bilateral hand actions during prehension.

Bimanual movements that require coordinated actions of the two hands may be coordinated by synchronous bilateral activation of somatosensory and motor cortical areas in both hemispheres, by enhanced activation of individual neurons specialized for bimanual actions, or by both mechanisms. To investigate cortical neural mechanisms that mediate unimanual and bimanual prehension, we compared actions of the left and right hands in a reach to grasp-and-pull instructed-delay task. Spike trains were recorded with multiple electrode arrays placed in the hand area of primary motor (M1) and somatosensory

Cross-Modal Reorganization From Both Visual and Somatosensory Modalities in Cochlear Implanted Children and Its Relationship to Speech Perception.

HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that children with cochlear implants (CIs) who demonstrate cross-modal reorganization by vision also demonstrate cross-modal reorganization by somatosensation and that these processes are interrelated and impact speech perception. BACKGROUND: Cross-modal reorganization, which occurs when a deprived sensory modality's cortical resources are recruited by other intact modalities, has been proposed as a source of variability underlying speech perception in deaf children with CIs. Visual and somatosensory cross-modal reorganization of auditory cortex have been documente

A novel micro-ECoG recording method for recording multisensory neural activity from the parietal to temporal cortices in mice.

Characterization of inter-regional interactions in brain is essential for understanding the mechanism relevant to normal brain function and neurological disease. The recently developed flexible micro (μ)-electrocorticography (μECoG) device is one prominent method used to examine large-scale cortical activity across multiple regions. The sheet-shaped μECoG electrodes arrays can be placed on a relatively wide area of cortical surface beneath the skull by inserting the device into the space between skull and brain. Although rats and mice are useful tools for neuroscience, current μECoG recording

Lithium therapy subdues neuroinflammation to maintain pyramidal cells arborization and rescues neurobehavioural impairments in ovariectomized rats.

Oestrogen deprivation as a consequence of menopause alters the brain neuronal circuit and results in the development of neurobehavioural sym … gth and spine density in the pyramidal neurons of the CA1 region of the hippocampus, layer V of the somatosensory cortex, and layer II/III of the prefrontal cortex in the treated group. A significant reduction in pro-inflammatory markers, Il2, II6, and Il1b, was observed in the hippocampus, somatosensory cortex, and prefrontal cortex following lithium treatment. mRNA …

Reduced coupling of somatosensory gating and gamma oscillation in panic disorder.

Previous studies have reported that patients with panic disorder (PD) exhibited an aberrant level of GABA concentration, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human brain. However, it remains substantially unclear whether the inhibitory function regarding the neurophysiological characteristics is altered in this disease. Sensory gating (SG) is considered as an automatic inhibitory function in the sensory cortex. In addition, brain's gamma oscillation within the sensory cortex is another index to reflect inhibitory function. Here we aimed to investigate whether the patients with PD showed alter

Reversal of Temporal Discrimination in Cervical Dystonia after Low-Frequency Sensory Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Somatosensory temporal discrimination is abnormal in dystonia and reflects reduced somatosensory inhibition. In healthy individuals, both the latter are enhanced by high-frequency repetitive somatosensory stimulation, whereas opposite effects are observed in patients with cervical dystonia. OBJECTIVES: We tested whether low-frequency repetitive sensory stimulation, which in healthy individuals worsens discrimination, might have the opposite effect in patients with cervical dystonia at the physiological level and, in turn, improve their perceptual performance. METHODS: Somatosenso

Pathophysiology of sensorimotor cortex in cortical myoclonus.

We have studied greatly enhanced cortical responses to somatosensory stimuli [giant somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) or magnetic field (SEF)] and cortical activities preceding the myoclonus (premyoclonus spike) in patients with cortical myoclonus, using magnetoencephalographic (MEG) techniques. A P1m component of giant SEF was estimated as a dipole positioned on the postcentral gyrus in all giant SEFs. This indicates that abnormally enhanced responses to sensory stimuli originate from the sensory cortex. In most of the patients with cortical reflex myoclonus, a dipole for the premyoclonus

Therapy of myoclonus.

The treatment of myoclonus is mainly based on the pathophysiological origin of the neuronal discharges producing the jerks. Myoclonus of cortical origin responds best to treatment. Drugs commonly used to treat epilepsy are usually capable of controlling action and stimuli-sensitive cortical myoclonus. Piracetam (6-20 g/day), clonazepam (2-12 mg/day), sodium valproate (1,200-3,000 mg/day), and primidone (500-1,000 mg/day) are the most useful ones, often given in combination. Myoclonus of non-cortical origin, i.e. reticular reflex myoclonus or spinal myoclonus, may respond to serotoninergic drug

Anatomic and physiologic bases of posterior tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potentials.

Following stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve, lumbar electrodes record a response that is the composite of two signals, one (PV) corresponding to the afferent volley in the cauda equina and gracile tract, and another (N22) generated postsynaptically in the gray matter of the lumbar cord. Subcortical structures generate two distinct, widely distributed signals, recordable from scalp electrodes using a noncephalic reference, P31 and N34. P31 is most likely generated by the afferent volley in the caudal medial lemnicus. N34 probably reflects subcortical postsynaptic activity in brain stem
