Leveraging anatomical constraints with uncertainty for pneumothorax segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Pneumothorax is a medical emergency caused by the abnormal accumulation of air in the pleural space-the potential space between the lungs and chest wall. On 2D chest radiographs, pneumothorax occurs within the thoracic cavity and outside of the mediastinum, and we refer to this area as "lung + space." While deep learning (DL) has increasingly been utilized to segment pneumothorax lesions in chest radiographs, many existing DL models employ an end-to-end approach. These models directly map chest radiographs to clinician-annotated lesion areas, often neglecting the vital domain knowl

Learning Positive-Incentive Point Sampling in Neural Implicit Fields for Object Pose Estimation.

Learning neural implicit fields of 3D shapes is a rapidly emerging field that enables shape representation at arbitrary resolutions. Due to the flexibility, neural implicit fields have succeeded in many research areas, including shape reconstruction, novel view image synthesis, and more recently, object pose estimation. Neural implicit fields enable learning dense correspondences between the camera space and the object's canonical space - including unobserved regions in camera space - significantly boosting object pose estimation performance in challenging scenarios like highly occluded object

Associations of long-term exposure to air pollution and green space with reproductive hormones among women undergoing assisted reproductive technology: A longitudinal study.

Studies investigating the association between long-term exposure to air pollution (AP)/green space and female reproductive hormones are still limited. Furthermore, their interactive effects remain unclear. Our study sought to explore the separate and interactive impacts of AP/green space on reproductive hormones among women undergoing assisted reproductive technology. We measured estradiol (E2), progesterone (P), testosterone (T), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the longitudinal assisted reproduction cohort in Anhui, China. The annual mean concentrations of air pollutants were calc

Space and place for WHO health development dialogues in the African Region.

BACKGROUND: Majority of the countries in the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region are not on track to achieve the health-related Millennium Development Goals, yet even more ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 on heath, have been adopted. This paper highlights the challenges - amplified by the recent Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa - that require WHO and other partners' dialogue in support of the countries, and debate on how WHO can leverage the existing space and place to foster health development dialogues in the Region. DISCUSSION: To

A Review of the Use of Microparticles for Cartilage Tissue Engineering.

Tissue and organ failure has induced immense economic and healthcare concerns across the world. Tissue engineering is an interdisciplinary biomedical approach which aims to address the issues intrinsic to organ donation by providing an alternative strategy to tissue and organ transplantation. This review is specifically focused on cartilage tissue. Cartilage defects cannot readily regenerate, and thus research into tissue engineering approaches is relevant as a potential treatment option. Cells, scaffolds, and growth factors are three components that can be utilized to regenerate new tissue, a

Simulated Microgravity Accelerates Alloy Corrosion by Aspergillus sp. via the Enhanced Production of Organic Acids.

Metal corrosion caused by Aspergillus sp. was shown to be significantly enhanced on a space station, but its mechanism is still unknown. To simulate this on earth, the corrosion capability of A. carbonarius on five metal sheets was investigated under simulated microgravity. Also, the effect of metal ions on growth and organic acid production was determined. Results showed that A. carbonarius could corrode all five types of metal, including Ti alloy, aluminum alloy, iron, and aluminum and copper sheet, and the corrosion was intensified under simulated microgravity. Energy dispersive X-ray spect

Exploring chemical space in non-targeted analysis: a proposed ChemSpace tool.

Non-targeted analysis (NTA) using high-resolution mass spectrometry allows scientists to detect and identify a broad range of compounds in diverse matrices for monitoring exposure and toxicological evaluation without a priori chemical knowledge. NTA methods present an opportunity to describe the constituents of a sample across a multidimensional swath of chemical properties, referred to as "chemical space." Understanding and communicating which region of chemical space is extractable and detectable by an NTA workflow, however, remains challenging and non-standardized. For example, many sample

Stigma, surveillance, and wounded healing: Promoting a critical ethics of care in research with formerly incarcerated Black women.

Black women experience myriad challenges post incarceration, from managing stigma within social relationships to navigating surveillance when interfacing with service systems. It is these challenges that also make them vulnerable participants in community-based research. With many of potential research harms not falling under the guidance of Institutional Review Boards, it is critical to explore how communities experiencing stigma and surveillance perceive their engagement in research. As such, this study explores how 28 justice-involved Black women experience the research process. Findings re

Hair color measurement and variation.

Pigmentation of hair in humans has been investigated by medical scientists, anthropologists and, more recently, by forensic scientists. In every investigation, hair color must first be defined by the researchers. Subjective color assessment inhibits the reproducibility of experiments and the direct comparison of results. The aim of this study was to objectively measure human hair color and examine the variation found in a population with European ancestry, using the CIE L*a*b* color space. Observer-perceived hair colors were compared with self-reported hair colors and the color as measured by

Supported Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavior Treatment for Adults with Severe Depressive Symptoms: A Secondary Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a highly prevalent mental health issue that exacts significant economic, societal, personal, and interpersonal costs. Innovative internet-delivered interventions have been designed to increase accessibility to and cost-effectiveness of treatments. These treatments have mainly targeted mild to moderate levels of depression. The increased risk associated with severe depression, particularly of suicidal ideation often results in this population being excluded from research studies. As a result, the effectiveness of internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) i

Nanophotonic chip-space interfaces for multidimensional nonlinear optics.

Reconfigurable interfaces between confined optical modes in integrated photonic chips and structured light in free space would benefit fundamental optical science and photonic technologies. Here we exploit the anisotropic nonlinear susceptibility tensors associated with thin-film lithium niobate to construct nanophotonic chip-space interfaces capable of generating and multidimensionally engineering structured light via injections of photons to on-chip waveguides. Harnessing the nonlinear Čerenkov radiation in integrated nonlinear microring resonators, we tailor the spatial profile, polarizatio

Medicalizing the Body and the Locale: Kala Azar and Disease Thinking in Assam, 1824-1900.

The article examines two seemingly unconnected occurrences at the nineteenth-century north east frontier of British India. The first is the production of a pathological space via moral, social, and cultural codes enacted by medical topographies on the region since the first Anglo-Burmese war (1824-1826) and the subsequent rise of disease thinking. The second is the ambivalence in disease thinking that is brought to fore through the mysterious malady called kala azar (visceral leishmaniasis), which was geographically designated as Assam fever. This article contends that the geographical designa

Quaternion Julia sets reimagined: The Garodia-Uddin iteration approach.

In recent years, significant research has been conducted on using various iteration schemes derived from fixed-point theory to generate Mandelbrot and Julia sets in the complex space. Building on these advancements, this work explores the application of the Garodia-Uddin iteration scheme to construct Julia sets of q↦qk+c in the quaternion space. Specifically, we establish the escape criterion for the Garodia-Uddin orbit and analyze the symmetry of the Julia set for the even values of k. Additionally, we provide and discuss 2D and 3D graphical examples of sets generated from the Garodia-Uddin i
