PURPOSE: Bowel dysfunction is a major problem in patients with spinal cord injury. Previous work has provided partial information, particularly about motor incomplete lesions. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the pathophysiologic features of neurogenic bowel in patients with motor incomplete spinal cord injury and to compare them with those in patients with motor complete lesions.
METHODS: Fifty-four patients (59% men; mean age, 43 years) with chronic spinal cord injury and fecal incontinence and/or constipation were evaluated; 32 had motor incomplete lesions, and 22 had motor comp

After spinal cord injury (SCI), the neurogenic bladder is observed to develop asynchronous bladder and external urethral sphincter (EUS) contractions in a condition known as detrusor-sphincter dyssnergia (DSD). Activation of the EUS spinal controlling center located at the upper lumbar spinal cord may contribute to reduce EUS dyssynergic contractions and decrease urethral resistance during voiding. However, this mechanism has not been well studied. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of epidural stimulation (EpS) over the spinal EUS controlling center (L3) in combination with a serotone

Integrity, control and regulation of the urinary tract are subject to a complex neuronal regulation, in which portions of the sympathetic, parasympathetic and somatic nervous system are involved. The spinal cord plays a central role in regulation and serves as a transmitter for the motor and sensory pathways. Bladder dysfunction followed by renal dysfunction was the most frequent cause of death in patients with spinal cord injuries/diseases (paraplegia) as recently as half a decade ago. Thanks mainly to diagnostic and therapeutic advances made in neuro-urology, urological problems are no longe…

PM&R plays an essential role in managing the individual with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Receiving care at an acute hospital and a rehabilitation center familiar with SCIs is critical. PM&R can guide the health care team and the patient/family through such a potentially life-changing event. Early consultation can help prevent complications and decrease stay length and mortality. A life-long relationship with the rehabilitation team is often recommended; team members such as navigators and multiple inpatient rehabilitation stays can help enhance care and opportunities for individuals with SCI.

Scientists are concerned that the research they conduct accurately portrays the needs of people living with spinal cord injuries (SCI). As such, this study set out to investigate the main problems faced by people with SCI and their expectations for research. This quantitative, exploratory, analytical, and cross-sectional study was carried out online, with a non-probabilistic sample of 618 Brazilian adults with SCI who had registered voluntarily to participate in the research of the Neurorehab group. The virtual questionnaire consisted of 22 questions based on ISCOS Data Sets. The majority (68.…

BACKGROUND: Individuals with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D) require frequent interdisciplinary health care to address impairments in mobility, autonomic function, and secondary complications. Telehealth has the capacity to substantially transform health care delivery and improve care by increasing access and communication. However, relatively little is known about telehealth use in this specific population. Here we attempt to fill part of this gap.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency and characteristics associated with telehealth use in Veterans with SCI/D.
DESIGN: Cross-sect…

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) severely impacts morbidity and mortality. However, research initiatives aiming to gain insight into the direct impact of ANS dysfunction on health outcomes in persons with SCI are still lacking. Thus, this study had 2main objectives: 1) to translate into Spanish the revised edition of the International Standards on documentation of remaining Autonomic Function after SCI (ISAFSCI), and 2) to describe the impact of ANS dysfunction in a sample of SCI patients.

Two centuries ago, electricity was being used for the treatment of paraplegia and trials were taking place in France. This study aims to identify cases of traumatic paraplegia treated with electricity in the 19th century in order to assess the therapeutic benefit. Only four such cases were identified, none with a complete transection of the spinal cord since these patients would have died from pressure sores and urinary tract infections. The personalities involved, William Gull, William Erb, Guillaume Duchenne and Cyril Henry Golding Bird are portrayed and contemporaneous views on electrothera

UNLABELLED: The widespread adoption of head-mounted display (HMD) virtual reality (VR) systems has emerged in various fields, including spatial learning research. This study investigated the effects of VR modality level of immersion, locomotion interface, and proprioception on spatial learning and physiological measures using eye-tracking (ET) in VR. We translated the classic T-maze task from Barnes et al. (Can J Psychol 34:29-39, 1980. https://doi.org/10.1037/h0081022) to humans for the first time, comparing three VR modalities: 3D HMD VR with physical walking, 3D HMD VR with controller-based

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is devastating, leaving patients wholly or partly paralyzed. Health care providers who care for SCI patients during the acute or chronic phases are faced with different phenomena in the lower extremities of these subjects. In this article, the authors review the relevant changes associated with SCI. Preventive measures of these medical complications are directed according to the specific cause. Early comprehensive rehabilitation carried out by a specialized team prevents complications while enhancing functional gains.
