Progesterone stimulates testosterone secretion in male rats.

In male rats, serum testosterone (T) and progesterone (P) levels fluctuate with daily periodicities that appear to be inversely related. To further investigate this interrelationship between serum T and P levels, we studied the effects of exogenous P on serum androgen levels. At 6--8 h after administration of P, serum T and DHT levels were consistently increased without any alterations in the serum LH and FSH levels. Following disruption of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis either by adrenalectomy or by anterior hypothalamic deafferentiation, procedures known to abolish serum T and P peri

Gastric acid responses to graded vagal stimulation in the anaesthetized cat.

Graded acid secretory responses were obtained in anesthetized cats with intact pyloric region when the frequency of electrical stimulation of the neck vagi was increased from 0.5 to 8 Hz; 4-8 Hz induced maximal acid secretion. Antrectomy reduced the response to vagal stimulation but the reduction reached statistical significance only after additional resection of the duodenum. Administration of per se subthereshold or threshold doses of exogenous gastrin restored the acid response to vagal stimulation in antrectomized cats. Combination of a high dose of histamine and vagal stimulation in antre

Exposome-wide association study of thyroid function using U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data.

Previous epidemiologic studies examining thyroid function and chemical exposures have typically focused on a single or a limited number of chemical classes, often neglecting the effects of chemical mixtures. This study addressed this gap by exploring the associations between exposure to hundreds of chemicals and thyroid function using an exposome-wide association study (ExWAS) approach and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data. We analyzed data from three NHANES cycles (2007-2008, 2009-2010, and 2011-2012), which include measures of thyroid function (free and total tri

A promising indicator of neurobehavioral toxicity using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and computer tracking.

A promising screening test for neurotoxicity has been developed using a computer tracking system and a species of nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. The animals are viewed in dark-field illumination by a video camera interfaced directly to a microcomputer. Several hundred nematodes are tracked simultaneously and rates of locomotion and frequency of change of direction are reported in real time. This system can rapidly obtain reliable data on a variety of behavioral parameters relating to locomotion and response to sensory stimulation. Initial testing has examined the effects of six chemicals on

Dissecting the role of TRPV1 in detecting multiple trigeminal irritants in three behavioral assays for sensory irritation.

Polymodal neurons of the trigeminal nerve innervate the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, oral cavity and cornea. Trigeminal nociceptive fibers express a diverse collection of receptors and are stimulated by a wide variety of chemicals. However, the mechanism of stimulation is known only for relatively few of these compounds. Capsaicin, for example, activates transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channels. In the present study, wildtype (C57Bl/6J) and TRPV1 knockout mice were tested in three behavioral assays for irritation to determine if TRPV1 is necessary to detect trigeminal irritants

Earable Multimodal Sensing and Stimulation: A Prospective Towards Unobtrusive Closed-Loop Biofeedback.

The human ear has emerged as a bidirectional gateway to the brain's and body's signals. Recent advances in around-the-ear and in-ear sensors have enabled the assessment of biomarkers and physiomarkers derived from brain and cardiac activity using ear-electroencephalography (ear-EEG), photoplethysmography (ear-PPG), and chemical sensing of analytes from the ear, with ear-EEG having been taken beyond-the-lab to outer space. Parallel advances in non-invasive and minimally invasive brain stimulation techniques have leveraged the ear's access to two cranial nerves to modulate brain and body activit

Allosteric Cannabinoid Receptor 1 (CB1) Ligands Reduce Ocular Pain and Inflammation.

Cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) activation has been reported to reduce transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1)-induced inflammatory responses and is anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory in corneal injury. We examined whether allosteric ligands, can modulate CB1 signaling to reduce pain and inflammation in corneal hyperalgesia. Corneal hyperalgesia was generated by chemical cauterization of cornea in wildtype and CB2 knockout (CB2-/-) mice. The novel racemic CB1 allosteric ligand GAT211 and its enantiomers GAT228 and GAT229 were examined alone or in combination w

Maternal immune stimulation reduces both placental morphologic damage and down-regulated placental growth-factor and cell cycle gene expression caused by urethane: are these events related to reduced teratogenesis?

Activation of the maternal immune system in mice decreased cleft palate caused by the chemical teratogen, urethane. Direct and indirect mechanisms for this phenomenon have been suggested, including maternal macrophages that cross the placenta to find and eliminate pre-teratogenic cells, or maternal immune proteins (cytokines) that cross placenta to alleviate or partially alleviate toxicant-mediated effects in the developing fetus. A third mechanism to explain improved fetal developmental outcome in teratogen-challenged pregnant mice might involve beneficial effects of immune stimulation on the

Peripherally obtained electrophysiological responses to olfactory stimulation in man: electro-olfactograms exhibit a smaller degree of desensitization compared with subjective intensity estimates.

After chemical stimulation of the human olfactory epithelium it is possible to record a negative response (electro-olfactogram, EOG) which is interpreted as the summated receptor potentials of the olfactory nerve. The aim of the present investigation was to test the EOG's changes in relation to pairs of stimuli. Stimulation was performed with vanillin (0.8 ppm) regarded to exclusively excite fibers of the olfactory nerve. Ten healthy volunteers participated in the experiments. Pairs of stimuli were applied at different interstimulus intervals ISIs (2-8 s). EOG could be recorded in 6 out of 10

A randomized comparative study of highly purified follicle stimulating hormone and human menopausal gonadotrophin for ovarian hyperstimulation in an oocyte donation programme.

A randomized comparative study of highly purified human follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH-HP), administered s.c., and human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG), administered i.m., was carried out in 41 volunteer oocyte donors. The response to ovarian hyperstimulation was similar in both groups. One cycle in both groups was cancelled. The number of oocytes recovered was 16.0 +/- 7.9 (mean +/- SD) following stimulation with 32.8 +/- 10.3 ampoules of FSH-HP (n = 19) over 12.3 +/- 1.7 days. Following stimulation with 29.8 +/- 10.6 ampoules of HMG over 11.5 +/- 1.6 days, the number of oocytes collected

Inflammation and dental pain in man.

In the present article special interest has been focused on indicators of latent and manifest pulpal inflammation studied by psychophysical and electrophysiological techniques. Intradental A-delta nerve activity was recorded from two electrodes placed in the dentin on the labial tooth surface. The psychophysical measures were obtained by means of direct scaling methods in combination with sensory verbal descriptors. For stimulation cooling (ethyl chloride) and heating (hot guttapercha) of the tooth surface were employed. In addition, potentially algogenic substances, bradykinin and histamine,

Role of capsaicin-sensitive primary afferent inputs from the masseter muscle in the C1 spinal neurons responding to tooth-pulp stimulation in rats.

The aim of the present study was to demonstrate the convergence of inputs from masseter muscle (MM) and tooth pulp (TP) onto C1 spinal neurons and to determine whether the afferent fibers express the functional vanilloid receptor (VR1). Extracellular single-unit recordings were made from 61 C1 units responding to TP electrical stimulation with a constant temporal relationship to a digastric electromyogram signal in pentobarbital anesthetized rats. Eighty-four percent of C1 neurons responding to TP stimulation also responded to the ipsilateral MM stimulation. Of these neurons, 61% were consider

[Study of cardio- and hemodynamic reactions to administration of GABA into the neuronal structures of the ventrolateral area of the medulla oblongata of cats].

The data obtained in acute experiments on cats have indicated that the most GABA-sensitive injected neuronal structures in the ventrolateral medulla appear to be located in the vicinity to the roots of the XII cranial nerves. GABA injected into these structures just rostrally to the roots induced hypotensive reactions due to heart rate and myocardial contractile activity decrease, besides inhibition of sympathetic vasoconstrictor influences. GABA injected into the neuronal structures in the caudal ventrolateral medulla induced hypertensive reactions, to a large extent due to increase in heart

Ventilatory effects of fourth cerebroventricular infusions of morphine-6- or morphine-3-glucuronide in the awake dog.

The ventilatory effects of morphine-6-glucuronide (M-6-G) and morphine-3-glucuronide (M-3-G) were evaluated in awake dogs (n = 10). A fourth ventricle to cisterna magna perfusion (VCP) system was used for drug administration. This permitted a direct comparison of the dose/ventilatory response characteristics of these morphine metabolites to each other and to morphine and obviated the need to consider the blood-brain barrier delay that would complicate analysis of systemic dose versus ventilatory response relationships among these drugs. The dose/response pattern for morphine was taken from an
