Ramsay-Hunt syndrome (RHS) usually affects adults, but rare cases of preschool children with RHS have been reported. We report a case of RHS in a healthy 4-year-old girl. At the age of 4 years and 5 months, she complained of pain in her mouth and herpes zoster vesicles were noted on the left soft palate and tongue without left pinna, and complete left facial paralysis subsequently developed. She was treated with acyclovir and steroids. Six months later, her facial paralysis had almost fully resolved.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a disorder distinguished by ulcers restricted to the oral mucosa. Because of the histological similarities between peptic ulcers and RAS and the identified role of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in peptic ulcer, the possibility of bacterial involvement in the progression of aphthae has been suggested. Our aim was to find H. Pylori in brushed samples of oral aphthous ulcers by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method.
MATERIAL/METHODS: The evaluated patients were referred to the laboratory with the diagnosis of RAS from the beginning of 200…

Journal of oral pathology & medicine : official publication of the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the American Academy of Oral Pathology2004eng
BACKGROUND: The recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common disease with unknown etiology. Helicobacter pylori has been shown to be the causative factor in peptic ulcers. Considering the similarities of histologic features between gastric and oral ulceration, we studied the possible involvement of H. pylori in the development of RAS.
METHODS: A total of 105 children and adolescents were investigated--53 patients with RAS (case group) and 52 patients without lesions (control group). Specimens obtained by swabbing RAS lesions, intact oral mucosa, and dental plaque were submitted to a polyme…

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) infection depends on the fusion of viral and cellular membranes, which is mediated by virus spike glycoprotein G at the acidic environment of the endosomal compartment. VSV G protein does not contain a hydrophobic amino acid sequence similar to the fusion peptides found among other viral glycoproteins, suggesting that membrane recognition occurs through an alternative mechanism. Here we studied the interaction between VSV G protein and liposomes of different phospholipid composition by force spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and fluorescence…

Cell-mediated immunity conferred by CD4+ T helper cells is considered the predominant host defense against mucosal Candida infections, with … s during immunosuppression, we evaluated Th1/Th2-type cytokines in the saliva of those with denture stomatitis, a form of oropharyngeal candidiasis not related to immunosuppression. Results showed that HIV-negative denture wearers with and without denture stomatitis demonstrated a mixed Th1/Th2 cytokine profile with no significant differences found between t …

An 8-year retrospective analysis of invasive Aspergillus stomatitis in neutropenic patients with acute leukemia was performed to characterize the epidemiology and clinical features of the infection. Twelve cases of invasive Aspergillus stomatitis were identified with both clinicohistological and microbiological evidence, and the majority of cases were caused by Aspergillus flavus (10 [83%] of 12 patients). The infection was strongly suspected when a neutropenic patient developed persistent fever without a known source, symptoms of gingival pain and facial swelling, and a solitary ulcerating le…

The immunopathogenesis of BD is believed to be T cell-mediated. The objective of this study was to characterize the activation stage and cytokine profile of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL), with particular emphasis on gammadelta T cells. Venous blood was collected from 20 patients with BD, and for comparison, from 11 patients with RAS and from 15 healthy controls. Both the expression of activation markers (CD25, CD29, CD40 ligand, CD69 and HLA-DR) on freshly isolated PBL and T cell subsets, and the expression of intracellular cytokines (IL-4, IL-10, interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and tumour n

We report 28 patients (20 male) with a syndrome characterized by abrupt onset of fever, malaise, aphthous stomatitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenopathy (PFAPA syndrome). Episodes of fever occurred at intervals of 5.1 +/- 1.3 weeks beginning at the age of 4.2 +/- 2.7 years. Fever, malaise, tonsillitis with negative throat cultures, and cervical adenopathy were reported in all 28 patients, aphthae in 19, headache in 5, abdominal pain in 5, and arthralgia in 3. Mild hepatosplenomegaly was observed in 6 patients. Mild leukocytosis, elevation of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, a…

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the systemic manifestations and joint disease in patents with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS).
METHODS: The presence and features of extra-oral manifestations were determined by a rheumatologist, who examined and interviewed 64 patients, referred during 1993 to the oral medicine clinic for treatment of RAS. Controls were 65 medical staff members of a military clinic associated with the hospital.
RESULTS: Based on the rheumatologist's findings and published criteria, the patients were diagnosed as suffering from RAS alone (24 patients), Reiter's syndrome (8), Be…

A case of major Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) in an 11-year-old girl is described to illustrate a disease which is relatively rare in children. The patient manifested classic signs of major RAS: painful ulcers, 5-10 millimeters in diameter, present on the lower lip, on the free and attached gingiva, and on the soft palate, lasting over 6 weeks. Familial tendency was evident. Emotional stress is suggested as a possible etiological factor for the occurrence of major RAS in this patient. Disappearance of the ulcers occurred after the stress had been relieved.

The aims of this study were 1) to determine the association between the prevalence of denture-related stomatitis and oral candidosis in patients undergoing long-term treatment with psychotropic drugs and 2) to identify the relationships between an increased prevalence of oral candidosis, denture cleanliness, dietary habits and cigarette smoking in these patients. Clinical and laboratory investigation of psychiatric patients under treatment with psychotropic drugs and who were wearing complete maxillary dentures, compared with control (non-psychiatric) patients revealed that 1) the isolation fr…

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), when grown in dual infection with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus, produced pseudotype VSV (TBE) with surface proteins provided by TBE virus. This phenomenon can be employed in a rapid, accurate and sensitive test for detection and assay of neutralizing antibodies specific for TBE virus.

Large numbers of VSV (LCMV) pseudotypes with the genomes of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and the coat proteins of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) were produced by infecting L cells first with LCMV and subsequently with VSV, the latter in the presence of tunicamycin. Separation by gradient centrifugation from the concomitantly produced LCMV genotypes, followed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), failed to reveal measurable quantities of the one glycoprotein ("G") of VSV. By serologic analysis it could be shown that anti-VSV antibody still attached, although with low effi…
