Angiostrongylus cantonensis Meningo-Encephalitis in Children-Heightened Awareness Needed During Prolonged Wet Weather Conditions.

AIM: Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the leading cause of eosinophilic meningoencephalitis, is well established in eastern Australia. Prolonged wet weather in Queensland during 2021-2022 coincided with anecdotal reports of increased neuroangiostrongyliasis cases, prompting an evaluation of paediatric cases from 2013 to 2022. METHODS: This retrospective observational study reviewed children (0-16 years) with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) eosinophilia (≥ 10% of the total CSF leukocyte count) and/or A. cantonensis testing (serology or polymerase chain reaction) between 01/01/2013 and 31/12/2022, using

Irreversible Ocular Lesions in a Dog With Angiostrongylus Vasorum Infection.

This report describes a 10-month-old dog with a sudden loss of vision and severe dyspnoea. The ocular examination revealed bilateral panuveitis, lens subluxation, secondary glaucoma, and retinal detachment. In addition, the ocular ultrasound showed in the vitreous body of the right eye, a small doubled-lined foreign body compatible with an intraocular parasite. Radiographs of the thorax revealed an increased opacity with mixed lung pattern (alveolar and bronchial) and thoracic ultrasonography showed several subpleural nodules. The presence of Angiostrongylus vasorum first stage larvae was conf

Emergence of the arterial worm Elaeophora schneideri in moose (Alces alces) and tabanid fly vectors in northeastern Minnesota, USA.

BACKGROUND: Moose (Alces alces) are a culturally and economically valued species in Minnesota. However, the moose population has experienced a sudden, marked decline in their range, including extirpation in the northwest and a 66% decline in the last decade in the northeast portions of the state. Although the exact cause of this decline is unclear, parasitic metastrongylid and filarioid nematode infections are known causes of morbidity and mortality in moose across North America. METHODS: To determine if these parasitic nematodes could be contributing to the Minnesota moose population decline

Estimating Burdens of Neglected Tropical Zoonotic Diseases on Islands with Introduced Mammals.

Many neglected tropical zoonotic pathogens are maintained by introduced mammals, and on islands the most common introduced species are rodents, cats, and dogs. Management of introduced mammals, including control or eradication of feral populations, which is frequently done for ecological restoration, could also reduce or eliminate the pathogens these animals carry. Understanding the burden of these zoonotic diseases is crucial for quantifying the potential public health benefits of introduced mammal management. However, epidemiological data are only available from a small subset of islands whe

Prevalence of pasture-associated metazoal endoparasites in Bavarian dairy goat herds and farmers' approaches to parasite control.

The majority of dairy goat farms in Bavaria operate pasture-based systems. Endoparasites are therefore a common problem affecting health and productivity of these herds. Pooled faecal samples from 37 commercial dairy goat farms in Bavaria were examined by modified McMaster, flotation, sedimentation and Baermann funnel techniques. In addition, a questionnaire was used to gather information on farmers' perceptions and parasite management efforts. The average trichostrongyle faecal egg count across the 37 farms was 620 epg, with a median of 450 epg (1st quartile: 135 epg; 3rd quartile: 930 epg; r

Thoracic computed tomography, angiographic computed tomography, and pathology findings in six cats experimentally infected with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus.

Aelurostrongylus abstrusus infection is common in endemic areas and may cause severe respiratory clinical signs. Computed tomography (CT) is an important tool to diagnose pulmonary disease, because it allows detection of small lesions and discrimination of superimposed structures. The purpose of this study was to characterize by CT and angiographic CT the pulmonary lesions in six cats before, and 48 and 81 days after inoculation with 100 or 800 A. abstrusus infective larvae. Histological examination of the accessory lung lobe was performed to determine the microscopic, pathomorphologic correla

Type 2 innate lymphoid cells constitutively express arginase-I in the naive and inflamed lung.

Arg1 is produced by AAMs and is proposed to have a regulatory role during asthma and allergic inflammation. Here, we use an Arg1 reporter mouse to identify additional cellular sources of the enzyme in the lung. We demonstrate that ILC2s express Arg1 at rest and during infection with the migratory helminth Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. In contrast to AAMs, which express Arg1 following IL-4/IL-13-mediated STAT6 activation, ILC2s constitutively express the enzyme in a STAT6-independent manner. Although ILC2s deficient in the IL-33R subunit T1/ST2 maintain Arg1 expression, IL-33 can regulate total

Troglostrongylus brevior and Troglostrongylus subcrenatus (Strongylida: Crenosomatidae) as agents of broncho-pulmonary infestation in domestic cats.

BACKGROUND: Aelurostrongylus abstrusus is currently regarded as the main metastrongyloid infesting domestic cats, whereas the reports of Troglostrongylus spp. in domestic and wild felids largely remain anecdotic. This paper reports on pulmonary infestation caused by Troglostrongylus brevior and Troglostrongylus subcrenatus in two kittens and describes, for the first time, associated clinical presentations and pathological features. Morphometrical, molecular and phylogenetic analyses have also been conducted to differentiate here the examined Troglostrongylus species from A. abstrusus, towards

5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase-2 in porcine parasitic bronchopneumonia: immunohistochemical and biochemical investigations.

Eicosanoids are products of arachidonic acid metabolism and have numerous biological roles. The present study aimed to investigate the role of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX)- and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2)- dependent enzymatic pathways in the pathogenesis of porcine parasitic bronchopneumonia caused by Metastrongylus spp. Pulmonary tissue samples from healthy control and parasitized pigs were processed for histopathological, immunohistochemical and biochemical investigations. In control animals, immunohistochemistry demonstrated that 5-LOX and COX-2 expression was almost exclusively limited to the bronc

Reversible pulmonary hypertension presenting simultaneously with an atrial septal defect and angiostrongylosis in a dog.

A one-year-old female neutered beagle was presented with marked abdominal effusion. Echocardiography showed marked dilatation of the right cardiac chambers, an atrial septal defect and severe tricuspid insufficiency. Systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (sPAP), evaluated by continuous wave Doppler echocardiography, was very high (80 mmHg), with a right to left interatrial shunt. The radiographic images were compatible with widespread pneumonitis. Numerous larvae of Angiostrongylus vasorum were visible on direct faecal examination. The animal was given fenbendazole for 15 days, combined with di

Subclinical cyathostomiasis and unidentified helminthiasis in a juvenile emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae).

The nematode Cyathostoma variegatum (a lungworm) was present in the distal trachea and proximal bronchi of an 8-mo-old emu that was euthanatized after fracturing the left tibiotarsus. Clinical signs of infection were not present prior to euthanasia and abnormalities were not noted on gross or histologic examination of the respiratory tract. The absence of respiratory signs in this and other emus underscores the need for routine fecal examinations to interrupt the inadvertent spread of this potentially life-threatening parasite. In addition to the lungworms, large helminth eggs were present in

Hypovolaemic shock after anthelmintic treatment of canine angiostrongylosis.

Canine angiostrongylosis was diagnosed in a whippet with typical signs of respiratory and circulatory distress. Subclinical Angiostrongylus vasorum infections were also demonstrated in two other whippets belonging to the same owner. All three dogs were given standard anthelmintic levamisole treatment combined with corticosteroids. Two days after initiation of treatment, one of the subclinically infected dogs developed severe hypovolaemic shock that required intravenous fluid therapy and corticosteroids to save its life. The shock is believed to have been caused by an anaphylactic reaction trig

Persistent infection of Strongyloides venezuelensis and normal expulsion of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis in Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, with reference to the cellular responses in the intestinal mucosa.

The kinetics of daily faecal egg count, worm burdens, and intestinal cellular responses were examined in Mongolian gerbils after infection with either Strongyloides venezuelensis or Nippostrongylus brasiliensis alone, or concurrently with both parasites. The results show that, both in individual and concurrent infections, S. venezuelensis infection persisted for over 10 weeks and elicited a gradual increase in number of mast cells in the jejunal mucosa. On the other hand, N. brasiliensis worms were expelled by 3 weeks in association with goblet cell hyperplasia. These results suggest that effe

Disruption of the C5a/C5aR1 axis confers protection against hookworm infection in lung.

Hookworms are soil-transmitted parasitic nematodes that penetrate the host skin before migrating to the lungs. With an estimated 500-700 million people infected worldwide, hookworm infections are a neglected tropical disease and a significant cause of morbidity, particularly in children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals. Although there is ample evidence that complement activation is pivotal to elicit a protective host immune response against invasive pathogens, its role in hookworm infection remains insufficiently explored. Here, we investigated the complement anaphylatoxin, C

Dynamic alterations and potential roles of gut microbiota and metabolites in Angiostrongylus cantonensis-infected mice and rats.

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongyliasis, a food-borne parasitic disease caused by Angiostrongylus cantonensis, is characterized by eosinophilic meningitis or meningoencephalitis, leading to serious central nervous system damage. Current diagnostic methods lack specificity or sensitivity, and the pathogenesis is complex and incompletely understood. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize the dynamic alterations in the gut microbiota and host metabolism in both suitable (rats) and non-suitable (mice) hosts following A. cantonensis infection and to identify potential metabolic biomarkers for earl

Isolate-specific rat brain transcriptional responses to rat lungworm (Angiostrongylus cantonensis).

The rat lungworm (Angiostrongylus cantonensis) is an invasive parasite of rats that in accidental hosts, such as dogs and humans, causes eosinophilic meningitis. In Australia, only two distinct rat lungworm cox1 haplotypes have been detected in clinically affected dogs, with haplotype Ac13 implicated in most cases. Using locally sourced isolates, we enquired whether the brain migrating larvae elicit different host response in its natural host. We examined brain transcriptome, faecal shedding rates, and adult worm of A. cantonensis isolates representing two distinct cox1 haplotypes, SYD.1 and A

Gastrointestinal nematode infection during pregnancy and lactation enhances spatial reference memory and reduces indicators of anxiety-like behaviour in uninfected adult female mouse offspring.

Maternal bacterial and viral infections that induce neuroinflammation in the developing brain are associated with impaired cognitive function and increased anxiety in the offspring. In contrast, maternal infection with the immunoregulatory murine gastrointestinal (GI) nematode, Heligmosomoides bakeri, appears to benefit neurodevelopment as juvenile 2- and 3-week-old male and female offspring had enhanced spatial memory, which may be due to a Th2/Treg biased neuroimmune environment. Here, the impact of maternal H. bakeri infection during pregnancy and lactation on the spatial and anxiety-like b
