This report describes the first case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the submandibular salivary glands and emphasizes the role of immunohistochemical study for a correct diagnosis of this tumour. In line with results of international literature, we associated surgery with radiotherapy and 2 years postoperatively there was no sign of recurrence.

Cisplatin is a platinum-containing antineoplastic agent, widely used in the treatment of various malignant neoplasms including head and neck cancer. A 9-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was presented because of coughing, dysphagia, and prostration. Examination revealed firm bilateral anterocervical swellings extensively adhered to the surrounding tissues. Anisocoria with left-side miosis was also evident. X-ray and ultrasound examinations along with a fine-needle aspiration biopsy were performed. Slides were stained with May-Grünwald Giemsa, and a diagnosis of salivary gland carcinoma was made. At surgery, the tumor was found to involve both submandibular salivary glands as well as adjacent lymph nodes and surrounding tissues.

Using nine monospecific and seven polyspecific monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) against cytokeratin (CK), we immunohistochemically studied the species specificity of CK localization in human, rat, mouse, hamster and guinea pig submandibular glands (SMGs). Four patients were subjected to sialolithotomy of the submandibular gland in the Department of Otolaryngology, Collegium Medicum, Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The resected calculi were examined under a scanning electron microscope and chemical analysis of their structure was carried out. Results of these studies were compared with clinical observations. It has been found that sialoliths are built up by inorganic salts, mainly calcium compounds. Crystallization processes proceed at variable rates and are related to duration of the disease and intensity of inflammatory reaction.

Foci of calcification were found ultrastructurally in the wall of an arteriole of a specimen of chronic submandibular sialadenitis. They were seen in the basement membrane surrounding the smooth muscle cells, where some of them were associated with vesicles and membraneous debris, and in a macrophage.
