INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The incidence of trocar bladder puncture during midurethral sling (MUS) surgery varies widely. We aim to further characterize risk factors for bladder puncture and examine its long-term impact on storage and emptying.
METHODS: This is an Institutional Review Board-approved, retrospective chart review of women who underwent MUS surgery at our institution from 2004 to 2018 with ≥12 months of follow-up. Unless prolonged catheterization was necessary, a voiding trial was performed prior to discharge, or the next morning in outpatients, regardless of puncture. Preopera

PURPOSE: Retropubic tension free vaginal tape (RP-TVT) has become the gold standard for surgical management of female stress urinary incontinence but is associated with voiding dysfunction (VD). We developed for more than 10 years a reproductible and totally tension free tape procedure. Our goal is to determine efficiency of this technique compared to the incidence of VD.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent RP-TVT in our center between 2011 and 2019. Subjective cure, VD (determined as maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) < 15 mL/s or post void residual (PVR) volume > 150 m

INTRODUCTION: Synthetic mid-urethral slings (MUSs) are the gold standard treatment for female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Recently, there have been reports of serious adverse events with synthetic tapes such as urethral erosion, vaginal erosion, and mesh infection. Tension-free vaginal flap (TVF) operation has been proven to be successful as a natural alternative to synthetic slings. We propose our novel technique, the transobturator tension-free vaginal flap (TO-TVF), utilizing native vaginal tissue and being suspended via transobturator route.
METHODS: This prospective study was cond

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the 3- to 5-year retreatment outcomes for conservatively and surgically treated urinary incontinence (UI) in a population of women 66 years and older.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used 5% Medicare data to evaluate UI retreatment outcomes of women undergoing physical therapy (PT), pessary treatment, or sling surgery. The data set used inpatient, outpatient, and carrier claims from 2008 to 2016 in women 66 years and older with fee-for-service coverage. Treatment failure was defined as receiving another UI treatment (pessary, PT, sling, Burch u

IMPORTANCE: The retropubic midurethral sling (rMUS) and sacrocolpopexy are treatments for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse, respectively, which are often performed concomitantly.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify whether a difference exists in the failure rates of rMUS when placed alone or at the time of robotic sacrocolpopexy (RSC).
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent rMUS placement between December 2015 and March 2020. The primary outcome was rMUS failure defined as additional treatmen

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Urodynamic studies are often performed in the evaluation of post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence (PPUI). The male transobturator sling (TOS) is a minimally invasive treatment for PPUI. Others have reported their results with a specific Valsalva leak point pressure (VLPP) that predicts a good outcome with the male TOS. Our objective was to determine the relationship of the pre-operative VLPP on the success rate of the male TOS in a high-volume, single center. We hypothesized that a higher pre-operative VLPP better predicts successful outcomes.
METHODS: We review

PURPOSE: To assess preoperative and perioperative characteristics associated with increased length of stay and major complications after mid-urethral sling mesh removal.
METHODS: We performed an IRB-approved retrospective analysis of patients who underwent mid-urethral sling mesh removal. Demographic data and baseline surgical characteristics were collected. Operative reports and hospital/clinic notes were reviewed for complications which were categorized using the Clavien-Dindo Classification scheme. Length of stay was deemed abnormal if greater than 1 day. Complications were assessed using

OBJECTIVE: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is relatively common post-operative complication following midurethral sling placement (MUS), even in cases where intraoperative antibiotic prophylaxis was given. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the non-inferiority of Femistina as compared with Canephron in reducing symptomatic UTI in first six months following surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: A sample size of 144 patients per group was established, to provide at least 90% power to demonstrate the non-inferiority of phytodrug Femistina versus Canephron as a prevention of post-MUS urinary tract i

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the most common subtype of urinary incontinence, which causes many social, psychological, and economic problems. Mid-urethral sling (MUS) surgery is popular worldwide for the treatment of SUI. We aimed to define a new modified mid-urethral sling technique (mMUS) in SUI treatment and to compare it with transobturator tape (TOT) surgery in terms of safety and efficiency.
METHODS: A prospective, randomized study was planned with 126 women suffering from SUI. The patients were randomly divided into two groups, TOT and mMUS. In mMUS

BACKGROUND: Stress urinary incontinence is the most common type of urinary incontinence in premenopausal women. Until recently, synthetic mid-urethral slings (mesh/tape) were the standard surgical treatment, if conservative management failed. Adjustable anchored single-incision mini-slings are newer, use less mesh and may reduce perioperative morbidity, but it is unclear how their success rates and safety compare with those of standard tension-free mid-urethral slings.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to compare tension-free standard mid-urethral slings with adjustable anchored single-incision mi

Male stress urinary incontinence most commonly presents secondary to prostate treatment of prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia, although it can be seen following trauma or secondary to neurologic dysfunction. Patient selection is supremely important when choosing the appropriate nonoperative or surgical treatment. Although most patients prefer the passive mechanism of adjustable balloon devices or slings, the artificial urinary sphincter provides the most efficacious and durable results with regard to patient satisfaction and continence. Changes in prostate treatment modalities and

Since the recent controversy about vaginal mesh implants, surgeons should use safe and effective devices and procedures to treat female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). We propose to describe the noninvasive and ambulatory technique of the urethral bulking procedure. Bulking agents are a simple, minimally invasive technique that can be offered in the treatment of female SUI.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Antibiotic prophylaxis is commonly used when implanting a mid-urethral sling (MUS) for female stress urinary incontinence. Use of antibiotics may lead to adverse events and the development of antibiotic resistance. This study compared a variety of outcomes after MUS surgery with and without antibiotic prophylaxis using data from the national Norwegian Female Incontinence Registry.
METHODS: Preoperative and 6-12 months postoperative subjective and objective data from 28,687 patients who received MUS surgery from 1998 through 2017 were extracted from the registry. C

We present a case of an eroded mesh mid-urethral sling into a urethral diverticulum. Preoperative MRI and 3-dimensional translabial ultrasound aided in the identification and surgical approach. Vaginal excision of sling with urethral diverticulectomy and complex urethral reconstruction was performed. To the author's knowledge, this is the first case documented in the literature describing an eroded mesh mid-urethral sling into a urethral diverticulum.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is an age health-related issue that generates interest due to its considerable public health burden and the controversies surrounding treatment. It is highly prevalent affecting 30-40% of all women during their lifetime. Midurethral slings are the standard of gold standard treatment for female patients with SUI. They have excellent short-term cure rates; however, their efficacy tends to decrease over time and patients often report urinary incontinence recurrence. This paper addresses the applicability of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering for the tre

A midurethral sling is a common procedure for stress urinary incontinence in women. Tensioning of the tape used for the sling is an art, and overtensioning during surgery can lead to obstructive symptoms. A patient with new onset of lower urinary tract symptoms after sling surgery should be evaluated for possible voiding dysfunction. Sling incision does not always correct the obstruction and excision may be needed.
