CUAMT: A MRI semi-supervised medical image segmentation framework based on contextual information and mixed uncertainty.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Semi-supervised medical image segmentation is a class of machine learning paradigms for segmentation model training and inference using both labeled and unlabeled medical images, which can effectively reduce the data labeling workload. However, existing consistency semi-supervised segmentation models mainly focus on investigating more complex consistency strategies and lack efficient utilization of volumetric contextual information, which leads to vague or uncertain understanding of the boundary between the object and the background by the model, resulting in ambiguou

Integrated Biomarker-Volumetric Profiling Defines Neurodegenerative Subtypes and Predicts Neuroaxonal Injury in Multiple Sclerosis Based on Bayesian and Machine Learning Analyses.

Background: The clinical-radiological paradox in multiple sclerosis (MS) underscores the need for biomarkers that better reflect neurodegenerative pathology. Serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) is a dynamic marker of neuroaxonal injury, while brain volumetry provides structural assessment of disease impact. However, the precise link between sNfL and regional atrophy patterns, as well as their combined utility for patient stratification and prediction, remains underexplored. Objective: This study aimed to establish a multimodal biomarker framework by integrating sNfL with comprehensive volum

An assisted diagnostic and prognostic model for endometrial cancer using 36 serological markers and clinical variables from 562 patients.

Endometrial carcinoma (EC) has demonstrated a concerning epidemiological trajectory. Current evaluation systems for EC are limited to postoperative analysis, necessitating the development of a preoperative risk stratification model. Researchers aimed to create a machine learning-based approach using multiple serological markers and clinical variables to predict EC characteristics. A dataset of 508 EC patients and 54 patients with endometrial atypical hyperplasia (EAH) was utilized. Seven supervised machine learning classifiers were evaluated, with the Random Forest classifier being the most ef

An Integrated Machine Learning and Genomic Framework for Precise Detection of Gastric Cancer.

This study presents a novel integrative approach for the analysis of high-dimensional gene expression data, leveraging the complementary strengths of unsupervised clustering and supervised classification. Using K-means clustering, the data set is stratified into three distinct clusters, revealing intrinsic biological patterns and relationships. The resulting cluster assignments are subsequently used as pseudolabels to train machine learning models, including support vector machines, random forest, and a stacking ensemble classifier. To validate and enhance the robustness of clustering, complem

SD-RetinaNet: Topologically Constrained Semi-Supervised Retinal Lesion and Layer Segmentation in OCT.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is widely used for diagnosing and monitoring retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The segmentation of biomarkers such as layers and lesions is essential for patient diagnosis and follow-up. Recently, semi-supervised learning has shown promise in improving retinal segmentation performance. However, existing methods often produce anatomically implausible segmentations, fail to effectively model layer-lesion interactions, and lack guarantees on topological correctness. To address these limitations, we propose a novel semi-supervised

DUR-Net+: Semi-Supervised Abdominal CT Pheochromocytoma Segmentation via Dynamic Uncertainty Rectified and Prior Knowledge From SAM-Med3D.

Pheochromocytoma is a rare urological adrenal tumor disease. Automated segmentation of pheochromocytomas from computed tomography (CT) is essential for diagnosis and treatment. However, this task is a challenging one due to issues such as blurred boundaries, irregular shapes, variations in location and size, and the lack of annotated images for training. To address these issues, we propose a semi-supervised framework for pheochromocytoma segmentation that primarily consists of a dynamic uncertainty rectification mechanism and a supervised strategy based on SAM-Med3D prior knowledge. First, we

A similarity-aware network with contrastive optimization for biomedical image segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Accurate biomedical image segmentation is crucial for clinical diagnosis. Convolutional neural networks and Transformer-based models have been widely used for biomedical image segmentation and have improved segmentation accuracy across multiple imaging modalities. However, most existing methods rely heavily on supervised learning with large-scale annotated datasets, while professionally annotated biomedical images remain scarce. In addition, the geometric consistency available from augmented and unlabeled images is not always explicitly exploited. METHODS: We proposed a similarity

Semi-supervised medical image segmentation of bladder tumors based on supervised branches and uncertainty estimation.

Supervised learning has excellent segmentation performance in bladder tumor segmentation, but it relies on a large amount of labeled data. To learn the features of bladder tumors from limited labeled data and obtain accurate segmentation results, we propose a semi-supervised segmentation method for bladder tumors, UDS-MT. The method consists of a Mean Teacher network and a guided branch, which respectively undertake the tasks of segmentation prediction and supervision of prediction results. Mean teacher network uses the exponential moving average (EMA) mechanism to update the teacher network p

Weakly Supervised Breast Ultrasound Image Segmentation Based on Image Selection.

Automatic segmentation in Breast Ultrasound (BUS) imaging is vital to BUS computer-aided diagnostic systems. Fully supervised learning approaches can attain high accuracy, yet they depend on pixel-level annotations that are challenging to obtain. As an alternative, weakly supervised learning methods offer a way to lessen the dependency on extensive annotation requirements. Existing weakly supervised learning methods are typically trained on the entire dataset, but not all samples are effective in training a robust image segmentation model. To overcome this challenge, we have developed a new we

DRSeg: a weakly supervised framework for breast ultrasound image segmentation.

Automatic segmentation of breast tumors in ultrasound images can assist physicians in making accurate and effective decisions. However, fully supervised learning methods typically require large amounts of pixel-level annotations, which are often difficult to obtain. Weakly supervised segmentation using image-level labels offers a promising alternative, but generating high-quality pseudo-segmentation labels remains a major challenge. In this study, we propose DRSeg, a weakly supervised segmentation framework for breast ultrasound (BUS) images that explicitly addresses the variability of pseudo-

Early detection of metastatic risk in primary cutaneous melanoma using weakly supervised learning.

Early identification of melanomas with high metastatic potential is crucial for treatment planning and survival prediction. We investigated whether weakly supervised WSI-based and multimodal learning approaches can identify metastatic risk in primary cutaneous melanoma beyond current clinicopathological predictors. A total of 426 routinely stained whole-slide images (WSIs), from primary melanomas (249 metastatic and 177 non-metastatic) together with corresponding clinicopathological features, were collected and divided to training and validation, and a hold-out test set. WSIs were divided into

Semi-supervised abdominal multi-organ segmentation by object-redrawing.

BACKGROUND: Multi-organ segmentation is a critical task in medical imaging, with wide-ranging applications in both clinical practice and research. Accurate delineation of organs from high-resolution 3D medical images, such as CT scans, is essential for radiation therapy planning, enhancing treatment outcomes, and minimizing radiation toxicity risks. Additionally, it plays a pivotal role in quantitative image analysis, supporting various medical research studies. Despite its significance, manual segmentation of multiple organs from 3D images is labor-intensive and prone to low reproducibility d

GMAEEG: A Self-Supervised Graph Masked Autoencoder for EEG Representation Learning.

Annotated electroencephalogram (EEG) data is the prerequisite for artificial intelligence-driven EEG autoanalysis. However, the scarcity of annotated data due to its high-cost and the resulted insufficient training limits the development of EEG autoanalysis. Generative self-supervised learning, represented by masked autoencoder, offers potential but struggles with non-Euclidean structures. To alleviate these challenges, this work proposes a self-supervised graph masked autoencoder for EEG representation learning, named GMAEEG. Concretely, a pretrained model is enriched with temporal and spatia

Approximation to pain-signaling network in humans by means of migraine.

Nociceptive signals are processed within a pain-related network of the brain. Migraine is a rather specific model to gain insight into this system. Brain networks may be described by white matter tracts interconnecting functionally defined gray matter regions. Here, we present an overview of the migraine-related pain network revealed by this strategy. Based on diffusion tensor imaging data from subjects in the Human Connectome Project (HCP) database, we used a global tractography approach to reconstruct white matter tracts connecting brain regions that are known to be involved in migraine-rela
