Defining the Properties of an Array of -NH2-Modified Substrates for the Induction of a Mature Osteoblast/Osteocyte Phenotype from a Primary Human Osteoblast Population Using Controlled Nanotopography and Surface Chemistry.

Accelerating the integration of a joint replacement or the healing of a bone fracture, particularly a complicated non-union fracture, would improve patient welfare and decrease healthcare costs. Currently, an autologous bone graft is the gold standard method for the treatment of complicated non-union fractures, but it is not always possible to harvest such a graft. A proactive highly inductive so-called smart material approach is pertinent in these cases. In this study, the surface chemistry of a previously approved material with desirable bulk material properties was modified to investigate i

Hay-based activated biochars obtained using two different heating methods as effective low-cost sorbents: Solid surface characteristics, adsorptive properties and aggregation in the mixed Cu(II)/PAM system.

The main aim of the study was to compare the sorption capacity of hay-based activated biochars, obtained using conventional and microwave furnance, relative to copper(II) ions and ionic polyacrylamides (PAM). Surface properties of the solids were characterized by, inter alia, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherm method, whereas their tendency to aggregation was established turbidimetrically. Adsorption capacity of biochars were performed in the simple and mixed Cu(II)/PAM systems, i.e. the examined suspensions contained one or two adsorbates at the same time. The results indicated that biochar pr…

Application of response surface methodology and artificial neural network for the preparation of Fe-loaded biochar for enhanced Cr(VI) adsorption and its physicochemical properties and Cr(VI) adsorption characteristics.

In this study, we optimized and explored the effect of the conditions for synthesizing Fe-loaded food waste biochar (Fe@FWB) for Cr(VI) removal using the response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN). The pyrolysis time, temperature, and Fe concentration were selected as the independent variables, and the Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of Fe@FWB was maximized. RSM analysis showed that the p-values of pyrolysis temperature and Fe concentration were less than 0.05, indicating that those variables were statically significant, while pyrolysis time was less significant due to i

Synthesis, crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface analysis, density function theory calculations and photophysical properties of methyl 4'-[(4-bromobenzo-yl)-oxy]biphenyl-4-carboxyl-ate: a compound with bromine⋯oxygen contacts.

In the mol-ecular title compound, C21H15BrO4, the dihedral angles between the aromatic bromo-benzene ring and the immediate neighbors (first and second aromatic ring of the biphenyl moiety) are 56.57 (2) and 50.91 (4)°. The dihedral angle between the aromatic rings of the biphenyl fragment is 5.78 (4)°. The torsion angles across the ester groups associated with bromo-benzene and methyl moieties are 178.0 (1) and 176.86 (2)°, respectively, revealing an anti-periplanar conformation in both cases. In the crystal, the packing of the mol-ecules is stabilized by Br⋯O contacts running infinitely alon

Evaluation of virulence determinants and cell surface properties associated with biofilm formation in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) Escherichia coli from livestock and poultry origin.

Antibiotic resistance poses a persistent threat to modern medicine due to the emergence of novel antibiotic-resistant strains. Therefore, a timely understanding of antibiotic resistance and the virulence biology of pathogenic bacteria, particularly those of public health significance, is crucial for implementing effective mitigation strategies. This study aimed to investigate the virulence profiles of ten S. aureus isolates (NDa to NDj) and ten E. coli isolates (ND1 to ND10) originating from livestock and poultry, and to assess how various cell surface properties and biofilm formation abilitie…

Dried hybrid imogolite nanotubes as solids with a changeable surface area: an insight into textural properties based on the correlation between nitrogen gas adsorption, immersion calorimetry into water, and small angle X-ray scattering.

Powdered samples of three imogolite materials with an inner surface covered with Si-CH3 groups (hybrid IMO-CH3) were prepared by ambient drying at 323 K, freeze drying, and spray drying. Reliable estimates of the intra-tube (SA), inter-tube (SB), and inter-bundle (SC) specific surface areas of these samples were inferred from a model-guided correlation between the results of measurements by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), nitrogen gas adsorption, and immersion calorimetry into water. Since the SAXS studies indicated no significant deformations of IMO-CH3 nanotubes upon drying, further stu

Design of Antibiofouling Lubricant-Impregnated Surfaces Robust to Cell-Growth-Induced Instability.

Biofouling, commonly referred to as the unwanted deposition of cells on wetted solids, is a serious operational and environmental issue in many underwater and biomedical applications. Over the past decade, lubricant-impregnated surfaces (LIS) arose as a potential solution to prevent fouling, owing to their unique layer of lubricant masking the solid from the outer environment, thereby preventing biofouling. However, living microorganisms alter their environment by reproducing and secreting biomolecules, which can threaten the stability of such coatings over time. In this paper, we show that se

Deterministic Error Propagation in Kinetic Kd Determination: General Theory with Application to Surface-Based Assays.

Accurate determination of equilibrium dissociation constants (Kd) from kinetic measurements requires understanding of how systematic errors in concentration and signal propagate into errors in rate constants kon and koff and further in the resulting Kd computed as koff/kon. Here, we present a deterministic, platform-independent framework for error propagation that applies to any kinetic method in which a reversible 1:1 binding between a ligand (L) and a target/analyte (T) is monitored through time-resolved traces under pseudo-first-order conditions, where the total concentration of T (T0) rema

Spontaneously charged water drops induce corrosion.

Water drops spontaneously become electrically charged when moving on different surfaces, such as plant leaves, insect wings, building walls, window glass and plastic1-9. This process, known as contact or sliding electrification, is analogous to tribocharging between solids10-13. The electric potential of water drops charged in this way can exceed 1 kV (refs. 14-16). A vital but as yet unanswered question is whether the charge in water drops causes corrosion. Here we analyse the effect of series of water drops hitting metal surfaces, which are protected by a non-conductive coating. Before hitti

Substrate morphology modulates bacteriophage mobility and alters bactericidal potency.

Bacteriophages (phages) are regaining attention as alternatives to antibiotics in the antimicrobial resistance crisis. Although successful cases are widely reported, the influence of physical, abiotic substrate morphology on phage performance remains largely unexamined, despite morphology being an intrinsic topographical feature present at many infection and decontamination sites, such as granular chronic wound beds or porous bone-implant interfaces. In this study, smooth, rough, and porous substrates were physically engineered to investigate the effects of abiotic substrate morphology on phag

Bayesian modeling of perceived surface slant from actively-generated and passively-observed optic flow.

We measured perceived depth from the optic flow (a) when showing a stationary physical or virtual object to observers who moved their head at a normal or slower speed, and (b) when simulating the same optic flow on a computer and presenting it to stationary observers. Our results show that perceived surface slant is systematically distorted, for both the active and the passive viewing of physical or virtual surfaces. These distortions are modulated by head translation speed, with perceived slant increasing directly with the local velocity gradient of the optic flow. This empirical result allow

Modulation of membrane deformability and stability in liposomes incorporating arginine-based surfactants.

This study investigates the ability of two arginine-based surfactants-Nα-benzoyl-arginine decyl- or dodecylamide hydrochloride (Bz-Arg-NHC10 or Bz-Arg-NHC12, respectively)-to act as edge activators (EA) in soy phosphatidylcholine (SPC) liposomes. Liposomes containing 20 mol% of either Bz-Arg-NHC10 or Bz-Arg-NHC12 (SPC20C10 and SPC20C12, respectively), along with surfactant-free controls, were prepared by thin-film hydration and characterized in terms of size, polydispersity index, and Z potential. Vesicle deformability was assessed by extrusion-based assays, while membrane organization and int

Synthesis, Crystal Structures, Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, Computational Investigations, Thermal Properties, and Electrochemical Analysis of Two New Cu(II) and Co(II) Coordination Polymers with the Ligand 5-Methyl-1-(pyridine-4-yl-methyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylate.

Two new Cu(II) (CP1) and Co(II) (CP2) coordination polymers (CPs) with the triazole ligand 5-methyl-1-(pyridin-4-yl-methyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylate (L1) have been synthesized and structurally characterized by SCXRD (Single Crystal X-Ray Difraccion), PXRD (Power X-Ray Difracction), FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared), TG (Theermo Gravimetric), and electrochemical techniques. Both CPs were obtained at the water/n-butanol interface by reacting nitrate salts of each metal with the NaL1 ligand. SCXRD analysis revealed that CP1 (Coordination Polymer 1) and CP2 (Coordination Polymer 2) crystal

Designated drivers: the differing roles of divalent metal ions in surfactant adsorption at the oil-water interface.

Divalent metal ions play numerous roles in biological, technological, and environmental systems. This study examines the role of a variety of ions, Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Mn(2+), Ni(2+), Cu(2+), and Zn(2+), in the adsorption of sodium decanoate at the carbon tetrachloride-water interface. For all ions studied, the ions drive the adsorption of the surfactant to the interface. Using vibrational sum-frequency spectroscopy and the carboxylic acid vibrational modes as a signature for metal ion binding, each metal salt is found to play a distinctly different role in the molecular characteristics of surfact

Thin-Film Eddy Current Sensors for Proximity Detection in Smart Capillary Pick-and-Place.

The eddy current sensor is a representative nondestructive sensing technique that enables sensitive interrogation of the conductive object surface in close proximity. Here, we propose an eddy current-based proximity detection strategy using a micropatterned inductor fabricated on a thin-film substrate (25 μm thickness) for integration as a smart, in situ inspection modality in advanced capillary pick-and-place systems. Notably, the eddy current sensing mechanism exhibited small sensitivity to liquids, allowing successful proximity detection during capillary pick-and-place operations. Our new s
