An outbreak of tuberculosis due to Mycobacterium bovis occurred in a wild animal park. Three pot-bellied pigs (Sus scrofa vittatus), one red deer (Cervus elaphus), one buffalo (Bison bonasus) and two European lynxes (Lynx lynx) were affected and showed clinical signs including weight loss, enlarged lymph nodes and paralysis of the hindlimbs. Postmortem examinations revealed multifocal granulomatous lesions in various organs, including the lymph nodes, lungs, intestines, kidneys and the central nervous system. Acid-fast organisms were demonstrated in various organs histologically and bacteriolo…

This paper focuses on mammalian pest species mainly in Europe and Africa and on implications for animal health, human safety, wildlife management and animal welfare. Three examples of problem species are presented: the wild boar (Sus scrofa), the stray dog (Canis familiaris) and the red fox, (Vulpes vulpes). Several species are reservoirs or vectors of transmissible diseases of man and of economically valuable domestic species. The control of these and other infections and the limitation of the nuisance or damage caused by these pest species involves lethal or non-lethal methods which are brie…

The aim of the study is to present the preliminary results of the in vivo application of Komagataeibacter xylinum E25 bacterial cellulose (BC) as a replacement material for produced defects during operations. Three pigs (sus scrofa domestica) had the same defects in the ear cartilage (4 × 4 cm) and in the rectus abdominis muscle (6 × 10 cm) with BC membranes implanted into them. The time of observation of the condition of the animals was 3 months. Implantation sites did not show clinical signs of complications in the form of inflammation or necrosis. Histologically, a normal scar was produced …

The anatomical features of the autonomous nerves, including the greater, lesser and least splanchnic nerves, were examined in 4 female and 4 male adult pigs (Sus scrofa). The origin and course of these nerves were examined with regard to sex and the side of the body. The greater splanchnic nerve was present in all of the animals included in the study, whereas the lesser splanchnic nerve was present at a rate of 87.5% on the right side and 75% on the left side of the median plane. On the other hand, the least splanchnic nerve was present on the right side at a rate of 62.5% and on the left side…

Re-examination of the holotype of Dermacentor atrosignatus Neumann, 1906 (Acari: Ixodidae) stored in the Natural History Museum (London, UK) revealed that this taxon is identical with D. auratus Supino, 1897 and should be treated as a junior synonym of the latter species. A correct name for the distinct species previously identified as D. atrosignatus Neumann, 1906 sensu Wassef & Hoogstraal, 1984 should be D. tricuspis (Schulze, 1933) n. comb., n. stat. Adults of D. tricuspis are redescribed here. Re-examination of extensive holdings of Oriental Dermacentor Koch, 1844 ticks stored in the Unite

In an experimental model, iatrogenic Horner syndrome developed after a right carotid sheath surgery in an infant pig (Sus scrofa). Horner syndrome is a classic clinical triad consisting of ipsilateral eyelid ptosis, pupil miosis, and facial anhydrosis. This syndrome results from cervical sympathetic chain (CSC) paresis and usually is acquired in humans. To determine whether the development of Horner syndrome in this situation could be attributed to pig anatomy, we compared the anatomy of the CSC in pigs and humans, by using 10 infant (age, 1 to 3 wk) pig cadavers. The CSC and cranial cervical …

In Sardinia, while human cancer epidemiology remains debated, lead accumulation in wild boar (Sus scrofa) liver (mean 6.70 mg/kg) aligns with elevated lead levels in children's hair, highlighting risks from both mining legacies and hunting ammunition. The findings confirm that veterinary surveillance data frequently precede human health alerts, documen …

Wild relatives of domestic animals are crucial reservoirs of genetic diversity, yet pervasive hybridization with domestic animals poses sign … tion model was effective and practical. The further application to the genomic data from wild boar (Sus scrofa), domestic pigs, and their hybrids validated the pipeline. Our method has potential in not only monitoring genetic diversity in wild relatives of domestic animals but also supporting animal genetic resource conservation and management.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen of growing public health concern. HEV genotype 3 is a cause of sporadic human infections in Europe, and is carried by wild boars (Sus scrofa). This study investigated the prevalence of HEV in free-ranging wild boars from different regions of Poland and evaluated the potential risk factors associated with infection. Serum samples (n = 367) were tested serologically for HEV antibodies, and spleen samples (n = 100) for viral RNA using Real-Time quantitative RT-PCR. Detection rates were analysed in relation to geographic origin, sex, and age…

BACKGROUND: It is important for porcine models to replicate gene mutations present in human diseases to improve the translatability of animal studies. In this study, the high efficacy of a whole exome sequencing kit was demonstrated for the improved pig reference genome (Sus scrofa 11.1) to profile biomedically relevant swine breeds and enable high-depth sequencing required for intratumor heterogeneity profiling.
RESULTS: We identify a total of 751,624 single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and 113,597 insertions and deletions (INDELs) across 93 samples from 12 porcine breeds. The identified mutat…

Oncolytic adenovirus has been widely evaluated as a cancer treatment agent with tolerable toxicity profile. We have recently developed a new oncolytic adenovirus Adf35(OGN) with two immunostimulatory transgenes alpha-1,3-galactosyltransferase (GGTA1) from Sus scrofa and neutrophil-activating protein (NAP) from Helicobacter pylori. Adf35(OGN) can kill tumor cells and trigger a strong immune response against tumor antigens. Here, we report the toxicity and biodistribution of Adf35(OGN) in Syrian hamster and GGTA1-knockout mouse. The virus was delivered subcutaneously in naïve hamsters and intrat…

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biodistribution of a platelet-derived exosome product (PEP), previously shown to promote regeneration in the setting of wound healing, in a porcine model delivered through various approaches. Exosomes were labeled with DiR far-red lipophilic dye to track and quantify exosomes in tissue, following delivery via intravenous, pulmonary artery balloon catheter, or nebulization in sus scrofa domestic pigs. Following euthanasia, far-red dye was detected by Xenogen IVUS imaging, while exosomal protein CD63 was detected by Western blot and immunohistochemis…

The Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa) is a key wildlife host for tuberculosis (TB) in central and southwestern Spain, posing a challenge to TB eradication in livestock. New strategies, including the use of beneficial microbes, are being explored to mitigate wildlife diseases. This study evaluated the effect of oral supplementation with postbiotic antimycobacterial metabolites produced using Ingulados' lactic acid bacteria (LAB) collection on TB development in wild boar. A total of 20 game estates in mid-western Spain were divided into two groups: one fed with standard feed containing the postbio…

Consumption of game in Germany has increased during the past 10 years. Wild boar (Sus scrofa), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) are the most frequently hunted and consumed game animals in Germany, yet information on the occurrence of zoonotic pathogens in these animal species is scarce. To better estimate the public health risk emanating from handling and consumption of game, this study investigated seroprevalences of Toxoplasma gondii in game hunted in the German federal state of Brandenburg during two hunting seasons from 2017 to 2019. Toxoplasma gondii-specific a…

Our aim was to investigate the occurrence and distribution of Chlamydia suis and other Chlamydiaceae in the wild boar (Sus scrofa) population of Switzerland and Northern Italy and the detection of tetracycline resistance genes by PCR. We collected a total of 471 conjunctival swabs (n=292), rectal swabs (n=147), and lung tissue samples (n=32) belonging to 292 wild boars. The prevalence of Chlamydiaceae in the investigated wild boar populations was very low (1.4%, 4/292). We found C. suis in rectal or conjunctival swabs but not in lung samples. The low chlamydial prevalence might be attributed t…

Optic nerve head (ONH) and retina (RET) are the main sites of damage in neurodegenerative optic neuropathies including glaucoma. Up to date, little is known about the molecular interplay between these two adjoining ocular components in terms of proteomics. To close this gap, we investigated ONH and RET protein extracts derived from porcine eyes (n = 12) (Sus scrofa domestica Linnaeus 1758) using semi-quantitative mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics comprising bottom-up LC-ESI MS/MS and targeted SPE-MALDI-TOF MS analysis. In summary, more than 1600 proteins could be identified from the ONH/…

The Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa) is a reservoir for tuberculosis (TB) in which vaccination is a valuable tool for control. We evaluated the protection and immune response achieved by homologous and heterologous regimes administering BCG and heat-inactivated Mycobacterium bovis (IV). Twenty-one wild boar piglets were randomly allocated in five groups: Control, homologous BCG, homologous IV, heterologous IV-BCG, heterologous BCG-IV. Significant 67% and 66% total lesion score reductions were detected in homologous IV (IVx2) and heterologous IV-BCG groups when compared with Control group (F4,16…

Leptospires, which cause the zoonotic disease leptospirosis, persist in soil and aqueous environments. Several factors, including rainfall, … these species correlated with the amount of rainfall. Furthermore, 10 vertebrate species, including Sus scrofa, Pteropus dasymallus, and Cynops ensicauda, showed high correlation with leptospiral eDNA detection. Our eDNA metabarcoding method is a powerful tool for understanding the environmental phase of Leptospira and predicting human infection risk.

Nematodes of the genus Trichinella are zoonotic parasites causing trichinellosis. In Iran, these parasites occur in several animal species and rare cases have been recorded in humans. To monitor the epidemiological pattern of these parasites in the Khorasan-e-Razavi province, Northeastern Iran, muscle tissues were collected from the tongues of roadkill animals between 2016 and 2017: 295 stray dogs, one red fox (Vulpes vulpes), 12 golden jackals (Canis aureus), and one wild boar (Sus scrofa). Trichinella spp. larvae were retrieved using the artificial digestion method and identified to the spec…

A complete characterization of the proteome of seminal plasma (SP) is an essential step to understand how SP influences sperm function and fertility after artificial insemination (AI). The purpose of this study was to identify which among characterized proteins in boar SP were differently expressed among AI boars with significantly different fertility outcomes. A total of 872 SP proteins, 390 of them belonging specifically to Sus Scrofa taxonomy, were identified (Experiment 1) by using a novel proteomic approach that combined size exclusion chromatography and solid-phase extraction as prefract…
