Relationship between lip motion detected with a compact 3D camera and swallowing dynamics during bolus flow swallowing in Japanese elderly men.

Clinical application of a swallowing function evaluation system that is minimally invasive and enables an objective evaluation is necessary. We constructed a system that can synchronise and analyse lip motion with a three-dimensional (3D) camera and swallowing dynamics with videofluoroscopy (VF) and clarified the relationship between lip movement and swallowing dynamics. A compact 3D camera was adapted to Microsoft XBox One Kinect Sensor® . We examined Kinect's accuracy and repeatability and analysed the highest measurement accuracy and repeatability of the distance between anguli oris muscles

Adding Endoscopist-Directed Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing to the Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study Increased the Detection Rates of Penetration, Aspiration, and Pharyngeal Residue.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Currently, the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) is the standard tool for evaluating dysphagia. We evaluated whether the addition of endoscopist-directed flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) to VFSS could improve the detection rates of penetration, aspiration, and pharyngeal residue, compared the diagnostic efficacy between VFSS and endoscopist-directed FEES and assessed the adverse events of the FEES. METHODS: In single tertiary referral center, a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data was conducted. Fifty consecutive patients suspected

Swallowing performance during cognitive tasks in healthy adults.

OBJECTIVE: Dysphagia frequently co-occurs with cognitive impairment, suggesting that swallowing may involve cognitive processes. However, the relationship between cognitive load and swallowing performance remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the effects of different levels of cognitive load on swallowing performance under dual-task conditions in healthy adults. METHODS: Forty-three graduate students (mean age: 24.49 ± 1.63 years, male/female: 22/21) were recruited and performed five tasks: swallowing single task (SST), low-load cognitive single task (STlow), high-load cognitive single

Swallowing-related quality of life in progressive supranuclear palsy.

AIMS: Dysphagia in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) has devastating consequences, including pneumonia and death; however, no studies have described its impact on quality of life (QOL), limiting the degree to which management approaches align with patient needs. Therefore, in this cross-sectional retrospective analysis we characterized swallowing-related QOL (SWAL-QOL) in PSP and assessed its relationship with demographic and clinical characteristics. PATIENTS & METHODS: Consecutive outpatients completed an assessment of swallowing including the SWAL-QOL questionnaire. Correlations and Wil

Using the Gugging Swallowing Screen After Intubation in Iraq.

Aspiration pneumonia and dysphagia remain significant health problems after intubation. This study reports on an evaluation of using the Gugging Swallowing Screen for early detection of aspiration pneumonia and dysphagia after extubation. A quasi-experimental design study was used involving 128 participants randomly assigned to two groups: an intervention group and a control group. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test and analysis of covariance. After the nutritional intervention according to the Gugging Swallowing Scale, the results showed a reduction in the total score for aspira

Swallowing the evidence: Oral microbes mark gut cancer.

Oral bacteria are swallowed constantly but rarely dominate the gut. In this issue of Cell Host and Microbe, Jang et al.1 turn that leakage into a measurement, showing that mouth-to-gut transmission rises specifically in gastrointestinal cancers and carries a diagnostic signal readable from saliva alone.

Impact of Mild Frailty on Quantitative Measures of Oropharyngeal Swallow.

OBJECTIVE: Frail individuals have diminished muscle strength and may experience swallowing dysfunction. While studies have demonstrated associations between frailty and oropharyngeal dysphagia, few have examined the impact of frailty on instrumental measures of oropharyngeal swallowing. Our objective was to compare quantitative measures of oropharyngeal swallowing during videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) in patients with mild frailty compared to no frailty, based on the Modified Frailty Index-11 (mFI-11). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted among adults undergoing VFSS. Hyoid di

Effect of acute ethanol intoxication on swallowing function in mice.

OBJECTIVES: Ethanol consumption may lead to various symptoms depending on its concentration in the blood. Acute ethanol intoxication is a major risk factor for bolus -aspiration; however, studies on the effects of acute ethanol intoxication on swallowing are lacking. Therefore, we investigated the effect of acute ethanol intoxication on mice using the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) methodology. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 J mice were randomly allocated into three groups: saline injection, 2 g/kg ethanol injection, and 4 g/kg ethanol injection. The VFSS technique was used to analyze the i

Stressing the System: Biomechanics of Sequential Swallowing in Healthy Adults.

PURPOSE: Sequential drinking of multiple liquid swallows requires sustained airway protection. Volume swallowed and speed of delivery may be altered by instruction and delivery method, for example, open cup versus straw drinking. Our clinical purpose was to explore the optimal method for "stressing the system" in a swallow assessment to provide the most useful information possible. This study investigated how task affected sequential drinking biomechanics. METHOD: Videofluoroscopic swallow studies of 318 healthy adults (20-99 years) were analyzed: 179 adults drank barium liquid from a 90-ml o

Alternatives for the administration of oral antineoplastics in patients with swallowing difficulties.

Oncology patients often experience swallowing difficulties, which can compromise adherence to treatment and consequently reduce its effectiveness. Improper handling of these hazardous drugs can lead to the risk of inhalation of particles or other exposures endangering the health of the persons involved such as nurses and pharmacists. The aim of this review is to analyse and update the recommendations for the manipulation of oral antineoplastic drugs in patients with swallowing difficulties. A literature review of articles, websites, guidelines and other documents published up to about the cond

Measuring and improving quality in esophageal care and swallowing disorders.

Evaluating clinical care through quality-related metrics is increasingly common. There are now numerous quality statements and indicators related to the medical management of benign and pre-malignant esophageal diseases. Expert consensus leveraging evidence-based recommendations from published society guidelines has been the most frequently used basis for developing esophageal quality statements. While surgical care of patients with esophageal malignancies, including squamous cell carcinoma, has also been developed, those related to benign esophageal disease now include domains of diagnosis, t
