Why does Gila elegans have a bony tail? A study of swimming morphology convergence.

Caudal-fin-based swimming is the primary form of locomotion in most fishes. As a result, many species have developed specializations to enhance performance during steady swimming. Specializations that enable high swimming speeds to be maintained for long periods of time include: a streamlined body, high-aspect-ratio (winglike) caudal fin, a shallow caudal peduncle, and high proportions of slow-twitch ("red") axial muscle. We described the locomotor specializations of a fish species native to the Colorado River and compared those specializations to other fish species from this habitat, as well …

Not all sharks are "swimming noses": variation in olfactory bulb size in cartilaginous fishes.

Olfaction is a universal modality by which all animals sample chemical stimuli from their environment. In cartilaginous fishes, olfaction is critical for various survival tasks including localizing prey, avoiding predators, and chemosensory communication with conspecifics. Little is known, however, about interspecific variation in olfactory capability in these fishes, or whether the relative importance of olfaction in relation to other sensory systems varies with regard to ecological factors, such as habitat and lifestyle. In this study, we have addressed these questions by directly examining

Associations between testicular hormones at adolescence and attendance at chlorinated swimming pools during childhood.

The goal was to evaluate the associations between testicular hormones at adolescence and the exposure to chlorination by-products when attending chlorinated swimming pools. We obtained serum samples from 361 school male adolescents (aged 14-18years) who had visited swimming pools disinfected with chlorine or by copper-silver ionization. We analysed serum concentrations of inhibin B (two different assays), total and free testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS). There were strong inverse …

Ecological association between childhood asthma and availability of indoor chlorinated swimming pools in Europe.

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesised that the rise in childhood asthma in the developed world could result at least in part from the increasing exposure of children to toxic chlorination products in the air of indoor swimming pools. OBJECTIVES: Ecological study to evaluate whether this hypothesis can explain the geographical variation in the prevalence of asthma and other atopic diseases in Europe. METHODS: The relationships between the prevalences of wheezing by written or video questionnaire, of ever asthma, hay fever, rhinitis, and atopic eczema as reported by the International Study of A…

Long-term imipramine withdrawal induces a depressive-like behaviour in the forced swimming test.

Chronic antidepressant treatments enhance dopaminergic neurotransmission in the mesolimbic dopamine system. We suggested that this potentiat … hronic imipramine 40 days after treatment interruption in an animal model of depression, the forced swimming test. The results show that animals treated with chronic imipramine, 40 days after treatment interruption, display a depressive-like behaviour in the forced swimming test, as indicated by their increased immobility with respect to the control group.

Complex flagellar motions and swimming patterns of the flagellates Paraphysomonas vestita and Pteridomonas danica.

Most flagellates with hispid flagella, that is, flagella with rigid filamentous hairs (mastigonemes), swim in the direction of the flagellar wave propagation with an anterior position of the flagellum. Previous analysis was based on planar wave propagation showing that the mastigonemes pull fluid along the flagellar axis. In the present study, we investigate the flagellar motions and swimming patterns for two flagellates with hispid flagella: Paraphysomonas vestita and Pteridomonas danica. Studies were carried out using normal and high-speed video recording, and particles were added to visuali…

The effect of water pH on swimming performance in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri, Richardson).

A Brett-type respirometer was used to measure the effect of water pH on swimming performance of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri). Variations in water pH between 6 and 9 had no measurable effect on maximum aerobic swimming speed. At water pH 4, 5, and 10, however, the critical velocity was only 55, 67, and 61% respectively of that recorded for fish in water of pH 7. Exposure to acid conditions increased coughing and breathing frequency. Acid exposure resulted in a decrease whereas alkaline exposure resulted in an increase in both whole blood and red blood cell pH. Blood gas and acid-base charact…

An outbreak of adenovirus type 3 disease at a private recreation center swimming pool.

In the period June 6--July 24, 1977, and outbreak of illness due to adenovirus type 3 (AV3) occurred in residents of a suburban community (Community A), Dekalb County, Georgia. Based on surveys, at least 105 cases occurred. The illness was primarily characterized by sore throat, fever, headache, and anorexia. Conjunctivitis affected only 34 of 105 (32%) of the individuals in two surveys. Frequent use of a private swimming pool was associated with illness in Community A residents. The outbreak coincided with a temporary defect in the pool filtration system which probably prevented maintenance o…

A study of the effect of peer-led instruction on the improvement of swimming skills of university students.

BACKGROUND: Peer-led instruction has been increasingly adopted in physical education; however, empirical evidence regarding its effectiveness in improving specific aquatic motor skills remains limited, particularly in university swimming education. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study examined the effects of peer-led versus traditional teacher-centred instruction on university students' 25-m breaststroke kicking performance over a 12-week intervention. A total of 80 s-year university students (19.6 ± 0.8 years; 40 males and 40 females) were included in the final analysis and allocated to ei…

speed-induced passive depth stabilization in a biomimetic underwater vehicle with a swim bladder.

A nonlinear mathematical model describing the vertical motion of a biomimetic underwater vehicle equipped with a swim bladder is developed. For a passive bladder that changes its volume under hydrostatic pressure, the system can achieve depth stabilization through a speed-induced mechanism when the lever-arm geometry (relative positions of the swim bladder and lifting surfaces) is favorable; otherwise stabilization is not possible. Using the Routh-Hurwitz criterion, analytical stability conditions are obtained in closed form, revealing a lower onset speed that is set by a simple coupling betwe

Threshold-Free Neural Network Models for Swim Bout Detection of Larval Zebrafish.

Accurate detection of swim bouts is essential for decoding motor behavior in larval zebrafish, yet conventional threshold-based methods rely on subjective cutoffs and per-experiment tuning. To address this limitation, we developed threshold-free deep learning models operating on tail-curvature time series: an offline model for post hoc analysis and an online model for real-time detection. Both improved precision over threshold-based methods, particularly for low-amplitude bouts. Using the offline model, we show that a head-fixed, closed-loop preparation largely preserves naturalistic swimming …

Highly transparent and elastic acellular swim bladder with potential application in cornea implantation.

Corneal injury is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and corneal transplantation remains a critical clinical treatment for restoring vision. However, the shortage of corneal donors greatly limits the application of this therapy. Although some biological corneal scaffolds such as collagen hydrogels and decellularized amniotic membranes, have emerged in recent years, their clinical efficacy is unsatisfactory because of poor tissue integration caused by the difficult suturing required and poor biomechanical properties of the scaffolds. To address these shortcomings, a decellularized swim b

A Multidimensional Preclinical Investigation of the Biogenic Amine Depletion and Subchronic Swim Models of Fibromyalgia.

Pain is a multidimensional phenomenon, encompassing affective-motivational, cognitive-evaluative, and sensory-discriminative domains. Understanding these components is crucial for effective diagnosis and management, particularly in conditions like fibromyalgia (FM), where pain is of unknown etiology. However, attempts to replicate FM through preclinical models often fail to replicate the disorder's multidimensionality. These studies evaluated the multidimensionality of two primary preclinical FM models-biogenic amine depletion(reserpine) and subchronic swim stress-across all three pain dimensi

A drug-carrying, multiscene, absorbable biological suture from fish swim bladder.

BACKGROUND: Traditional sutures often fail to meet the complex demands of wound closure across diverse anatomical environments. This study introduces a novel drug-eluting, multiscene absorbable biological suture derived from decellularized fish swim bladder, designed to address limitations in mechanical performance, pH resistance, and foreign body reactions. METHODS: Swim bladders were decellularized, microdissected into 0.3-mm strips, and functionalized with rapamycin (RAPA) or necrostatin-1 (NEC-1) via hyaluronic acid/polyvinyl alcohol coatings. Sutures were evaluated for cytotoxicity [huma

Swim bladder-derived biomaterials: structures, compositions, properties, modifications, and biomedical applications.

Animal-derived biomaterials have been extensively employed in clinical practice owing to their compositional and structural similarities with those of human tissues and organs, exhibiting good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, and extensive sources. However, there is an associated risk of infection with pathogenic microorganisms after the implantation of tissues from pigs, cattle, and other mammals in humans. Therefore, researchers have begun to explore the development of non-mammalian regenerative biomaterials. Among these is the swim bladder, a fish-derived biomaterial that is rapi

Review on the management of water quality for bio-mineral swimming pools in Western Europe.

In this review, we depict the state of the art concerning the water quality management of bio-mineral bathing pools, and compare these to traditional swimming pools. Bio-mineral pools use a combination of mechanic filtration, bio-filtration, and UV-treatment to disinfect the water. Studies in test tanks have shown that bio-filtration is effective in maintaining the water quality with regard to the treatment of organic pollution. Concerning biological risks, the bio-mineral pool relies on UV-treatment to degrade bacteria. Unlike chemical disinfectant treatments, UV disinfection does not lose it…

Diving into dual functionality: Swim bladder muscles in lionfish for buoyancy and sonic capabilities.

Although the primary function of the swim bladder is buoyancy, it is also involved in hearing, and it can be associated with sonic muscles for voluntary sound production. The use of the swim bladder and associated muscles in sound production could be an exaptation since this is not its first function. We however lack models showing that the same muscles can be used in both movement and sound production. In this study, we investigate the functions of the muscles associated with the swim bladder in different Pteroinae (lionfish) species. Our results indicate that Pterois volitans, P. radiata and

The role of the oxytocinergic system in the antidepressant-like effect of swimming training in male mice.

Increasing evidence shows that higher physical activity such as running and swimming exercises is associated with decreased depression-related symptoms. However, underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate whether oxytocinergic system can mediate the antidepressant effect of swimming exercises in mice. First, male NMRI mice were subjected to swimming training for eight weeks, then animals intraperitoneally received oxytocin antagonist (L-368899) 1 h before behavioral tests. We assessed anhedonia and social behavior and behavioral despair using the sucrose pr…
