A female, 2 years and 7 months of age, was admitted to the hospital with stupor and nystagmus following projectile vomiting. She had been pr … us collateral vessels in the vicinity of the occlusion. These features are consistent with moyamoya syndrome. This report presents the first case of moyamoya syndrome with trisomy 12p with a familial pericentric inversion of chromosome 12.

We reported an autopsy case of Down's syndrome with moyamoya syndrome. A 30-year-old male with Down's syndrome suffered from a cerebral infarction and died of brain herniation. Cerebral angiography showed vascular abnormalities that were the same as moyamoya disease. Pathological findings revealed multiple stenosis of main trunk of the cerebral arteries. Pathologically, the stenosed vessels showed eccentric intimal thickness with cholesterin deposit, unlike moyamoya disease. There are only two previous reports of autopsied cases of Down's syndrome with moyamoya syndrome. We postulate that a pr…

BACKGROUND: The toxic oil syndrome (TOS) is an autoimmune disease caused by the ingestion of aniline-denatured rapeseed oil. The carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is an entrapment neuropathy due to the median nerve entrapment, which is associated with both occupational activities and autoimmune diseases. The objective of this work was to know the frequency and characteristics of CTS in TOS patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between December 1977 and July 2000, 744 TOS patients were evaluated. The inclusion criteria were: the clinical records for patients diagnosed between May 1981 and November 1997; …

The purposes of this study were to assess the occurrence of euthyroid sick syndrome in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or unstable angina (UA), and the relationship with beta-blocker or thrombolytic therapy. Plasma triiodothyronine (T3), reverse T3 (rT3), free T3 (FT3), thyroxine (T4), free T4 (FT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG), and albumin (ALB) levels were determined in 95 patients (59 males, 36 females, aged 58.4+/-9) with AMI and 19 patients (13 males, 6 females aged 54.7+/-12.3) with UA for 5 consecutive days from the onset of the ac…

Drug Rash with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS syndrome) or the drug hypersensitivity syndrome is a delayed and serious skin disease. It is manifest by a severe skin reaction associated with a severe visceral attack (adenopathy, hepatitis, nephritis, interstitial pneumopathy...) and haematological anomalies (raised hypereosinophilia...). The severe visceral attack is the main cause of death, which is estimated at around 10%. The principal drugs responsible are the aromatic anti-convulsants, sulphamides and minocycline. A large number of cases have been described with phenytoin, more …

Patients with the Ellis-Van Creveld syndrome have a short stature. The extremities are often plump and markedly shortened, progressively from the trunk to the fingers and the toes. A bilateral postaxial sixth finger is frequent. The most striking and consistent finding in the mouth is fusion of the middle part of the upper lip to the labial sulcus, resulting in a so-called 'whistling deformity'. Congenitally missing teeth, particularly in the frontal region, are a constant finding too. Teeth are usually small and have conical crowns. Supernummer teeth have also been noted. The oral and maxillo…

BACKGROUND: Hypokalemia due to renal potassium wasting in the absence of hypertension, moderate metabolic alkalosis, hyperreninism and hyperaldosteronism suggest the presence of Bartter's syndrome. The underlying cause is an inherited defect of sodium chloride reabsorption in the thick ascending limb of Henle. A differential diagnosis of Bartter's syndrome is Gitelman's syndrome, another hypokalemia-hypomagnesemia syndrome, which is thought to be caused by a transport defect in the distal tube.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report 3 patients presenting with signs primarily suggestive of Bartter's …

Acrocallosal syndrome is an autosomal recessive form of polysyndactyly associated with mental retardation and agenesis of the corpus callosum. There have been suggestions that it is allelic to the Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome. Linkage analysis, using flanking markers, shows this suggestion is unlikely to be correct.

We report on an infant girl with hydrops, macrocephaly, high forehead, flat face, hypertelorism, broad nasal bridge, median cleft lip and alveolar ridge, grooved palate, accessory frenula, small tongue, milia, severe rib and limb shortness, brachydactyly, talipes equinovarus, Dandy-Walker malformation, accessory spleen, unfixed mesentery, ectopic pancreas, and renal cysts. This patient resembles seven previously reported patients with the Beemer-Langer syndrome, a distinct lethal short rib syndrome characterized by hydrops, markedly short ribs and limbs, median cleft lip with or without cleft …

The hyperviscosity syndrome is most commonly seen in association with monoclonal gammopathies and has only rarely been described in association with polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. We have recently seen a patient with known acquired immunodeficiency syndrome who presented with the hyperviscosity syndrome in the setting of polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a patient with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and the hyperviscosity syndrome. The case is presented and the pathogenesis and implications of this diagnosis are discussed.

In this paper we report on a third patient with Klinefelter syndrome and fragile X. In the Leuven experience the simultaneous occurrence of both conditions is 1:155 (3 fra(X) positive Klinefelter patients in a total number of 465 fra(X) positive males), a concurrence much higher than expected by chance considering the frequency of both conditions.
