Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for chronic radiation-induced tissue injuries: Australasia's largest study.

AIM: Chronic radiation injuries, although uncommon, are associated with poor quality of life in oncology patients. The present study assesses the efficacy and safety of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the management of chronic radiation-induced tissue injuries. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed in 276 consecutive patients treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy for chronic radiation-induced tissue injuries at the Hyperbaric Medicine Unit, Townsville, Queensland, between March 1995 and March 2008. Of these patients, 189 (68%) had complete follow-up data and were assessed. RESULTS: A

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy in diagnosis of soft tissue infections.

This study explores the efficacy of fine-needle tissue aspiration biopsy in the diagnosis of soft tissue infections that cannot be sampled satisfactorily by regular microbiological techniques. Aspiration biopsy was performed on 50 patients with presumptive soft tissue infections. The conditions investigated were decubitus, diabetic, ischemic, venous, and traumatic ulcers (2, 6, 1, 2, and 7 patients, respectively), cellulitis (23 patients), chronic osteomyelitis (5 patients), and infected surgical wounds (4 patients). Where possible, comparison with superficial cultures was made. All of the cul

Soft tissue trauma and scar revision.

Numerous techniques and treatments have been described for scar revision, with most studies focusing on the adult population. A comprehensive review of the literature reveals a paucity of references related specifically to scar revision in children. This review describes the available modalities in pediatric facial scar revision. The authors have integrated current practices in soft tissue trauma and scar revision, including closure techniques and materials, topical therapy, steroid injection, cutaneous laser therapy, and tissue expanders.

[The acute orthoplastic patient : Definition and initial management recommendations: consensus statement of the Orthoplastic Surgery Working Group of the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU) and the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (DGPRÄC)].

Orthoplastic surgery combines the expertise of trauma and orthopedic surgery with plastic and reconstructive surgery for the management of complex musculoskeletal injuries associated with extensive soft tissue defects. Its primary aim is to provide early, coordinated interdisciplinary care to restore skeletal stability, achieve durable soft tissue coverage, and maximize long-term function. An acute orthoplastic patient is defined as an individual with complex musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries requiring close interdisciplinary collaboration between trauma, plastic, and, where appropriate

Pedicled abdominal flap using deep inferior epigastric artery perforators for forearm reconstruction: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pedicled abdominal flaps are a widely used surgical technique for forearm reconstruction in patients with soft tissue defects. However, some drawbacks include restricted flap size, partial flap loss, and donor-site morbidity. To address these concerns, we present a case of a pedicled abdominal flap using the deep inferior epigastric artery perforators (DIEP) for forearm reconstruction in a patient with a large soft tissue defect. CASE SUMMARY: A 46-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital with forearm injury caused by a pressing machine. A 15 cm × 10 cm soft tissue defec

[Contribution of linezolid to the treatment of complicated infections of the skin and soft tissues].

THREE GROUPS OF INCREASING SEVERITY: According to the 2000 consensus conference, bacterial infections of the skin and soft tissues can be classified in three categories of increasing severity: bacterial dermo-hypodermal infections, bacterial dermo-hypodermal necrotizing infections, necrotizing fasciitis. The last two categories are medicosurgical emergency conditions requiring repeated surgical debridement and probabilistic antibiotic therapy. LINEZOLID: The clinical efficacy of linezolid in bacterial infections of the skin and soft tissues is comparable to that of oxacillin/dicloxacillin. Sev

Soft tissue conditions in athletes' feet.

Soft tissue conditions of the foot vary considerably. They include problems of the skin and subcutaneous tissues, tendons and the plantar aponeurosis, ligaments and joints, and supporting structures, including vessels and nerves. Some conditions occur from everyday use, others are caused by continuous and repetitious motions from a particular activity or sport. Overuse syndromes occur from the fatigue of soft tissues through continued use beyond the body's ability to heal microscopic daily wear and tear. Acute trauma occurs when the powerful forces generated by the running or jumping athlete f

An Additive Effect of Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization with Spinal Manipulation in Cervicogenic Headache: a Randomized Controlled Trial.

IntroductionThere is a multitude of evidence supporting the use of manual and manipulative therapy techniques for patients with cervicogenic headache (CGH). However, evidence in finding and comparing the efficacy of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization with manual therapy in unilateral cervicogenic headache is lacking. Therefore, the objective of the study is to find and compare the long term effects of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization along with spinal manipulation therapy in patients with cervicogenic headache.MethodsIt is a randomized, single-blinded controlled study con

Modern concepts of the diagnosis and treatment of necrotizing fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a potentially fatal infection involving rapidly progressive, widespread necrosis of the superficial fascia. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this collective review is to review modern concepts of the treatment and diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis. DISCUSSION: Necrotizing fasciitis is characterized by widespread necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue and the fascia. Although the pathogenesis of necrotizing fasciitis is still open to speculation, the rapid and destructive clinical course of necrotizing fasciitis is thought to be due to multibacterial symbiosis. Norms of soft tissue cephalometric in the 18-25 age demography in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The soft-tissue layer and facial skeleton influence the harmony and equilibrium of the face. The evaluation of the patient's structural and soft-tissue features is one of the most crucial steps in preparing for the diagnosis and treatment of oral-maxillofacial orthodontics. Clinicians can intervene with the proper treatment at the proper time to achieve the best results by being aware of the traits and variations of soft tissue at various developmental stages and in various races. To obtain a consistent treatment result in terms of function and aesthetically pleasing re

Orthopedic surgical management of hip and knee involvement in patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is the most common arthritic disease of childhood and a leading cause of childhood disability, affecting an estimated 300,000 US children and adolescents aged < or =16 years. Approximately 10% to 30% of patients experience functional deficits resulting from both the articular and systemic manifestations of their disease, including leg length inequality and deformity, that are often more crippling than joint destruction. Surgical intervention to treat bone and soft-tissue deformity, leg length inequality, and joint destruction is indicated when medical therapy has

[Chronic post-traumatic osteitis].

Chronic osteomyelitis manifests itself predominantly by suppuration and sinus tract formation, radiologic alterations and increased sedimentation rate. Therapy of the productive-purulent form of p.o. consists in debridement, stability, irrigation drainage or local application of collagen-gentamycin or Taurolin, filling off the osseous defect by autogenous cancellous bone, soft tissue defects are closed by local pediculed muscle-flaps (gastro-cnemius/soleus) or by transplantation of muscle- (latissimus) or skinflaps (radialis) with microsurgical anastomosis. The Role of Radiotherapy in the Management of Chest Wall Soft Tissue Sarcomas.

Soft tissue sarcoma (STS) of the chest wall is a relatively uncommon presentation of STS, though a common subtype of truncal STS. Wide en-bloc resection is the foundation of multimodality treatment of STS, but surgical resection alone can produce suboptimal outcomes for many patients. In this article, we summarize existing literature on the role of radiotherapy in the management of chest wall STS and provide an overview of its recommended use with a focus on the ASTRO Guideline on Radiation Therapy for Treatment of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in Adults.

A kidney transplant recipient with shingles and necrotizing bacterial superinfection: a case report.

We report a 45-year-old kidney transplant recipient who developed primary varicella zoster virus infection complicated by monomicrobial necrotizing skin and soft tissue infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Progressive facial and oropharyngeal edema led to airway compromise requiring endotracheal intubation. Blood and wound cultures grew Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and targeted therapy with meropenem resulted in clinical improvement. The patient recovered with preserved allograft function but was left with residual facial nerve palsy. Pseudomonas aeruginosa-associated monomicrobial necrotizi

Free Radial Forearm "Bunting" Flap for Reconstructing Soft-tissue Defects Involving Multiple Fingers.

Reconstruction of soft-tissue defects on multiple fingers is challenging because the number of recipient vessels for free flaps is limited. We report the use of a free radial forearm flap with multiple perforator-based skin islands for the reconstruction of complex soft-tissue defects involving multiple fingers. The injuries were caused by a heat press. The flap was transferred, like "bunting," to the injured hand with an exteriorized pedicle. The technique presented here is advantageous because it simultaneously covers multiple defects and allows immediate hand therapy after the operation.

Necrotizing fasciitis: an uncommon consequence of pressure ulceration.

Pressure ulcers may occur in patients with chronic illnesses, especially in those who are bed-bound or chair-bound. Local measures usually suffice to allow primary ulcer healing and support skin grafting or tissue transfer reconstruction. On rare occasions, however, pressure ulcers may progress to invasive infection and necrosis of adjacent soft tissues, possibly leading to necrotizing fasciitis. Early recognition and aggressive medical and surgical therapy are required to halt disease progression and prevent patient mortality. Two cases are presented to describe the severity of this soft-tiss

Soft tissue angiosarcoma of the breast in a patient with Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome.

Angiosarcomas are neoplasms of blood or lymphatic vessels with aggressive behavior. We report the coexistence of this malignancy within soft tissue of the breast in a 49-year-old woman who was diagnosed with Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome (KTW-S) during childhood. The patient has no previous history of radiation therapy on the chest and does not have any known risk factor for developing angiosarcoma, except for her congenital disease. To the best of our knowledge, the association between soft tissue angiosarcoma of the breast and KTW-S has never been previously reported.

Immediate loading of two single tooth implants in the maxilla: preliminary results after one year.

This clinical report describes the traumatic avulsion of the left maxillary central and lateral incisors with minimal tissue trauma, followed by placement of provisional restorations of two root-form implants in a 14-year old female patient. Ten days following the avulsion, implant therapy was performed with Summers osteotomes and flapless technique using a root-form 3i osseotite NT. Angulated abutments and acrylic provisional crowns were placed. No occlusal contact was detected. An impression was made 30 days after implant insertion and ceramic restorations were placed 3 months later. No sign

Effect of low-level laser therapy on tissue repair after dental extraction in rats administered zoledronic acid and dexamethasone.

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are being increasingly used for the treatment of metabolic and oncological pathologies involving the skeletal system. Because of the severity of the BP associated osteonecrosis of the jaws, the difficulties of treatment, and patient discomfort, additional support methods for their management are needed. Laser therapy has an easy handling, photobiostimulator effect on tissues healing, so it can be considered a preferred therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of low-level laser therapy in the 685- and 830-nm wavelength in the healing process of the bon
